I'm gonna go out on a limb in pre-empting a reply from the expert but:

It is a fact little understood by many that goth chicks do not have to dress like they have taken a pair of scissors to a 'SEXY WITCH' halloween costume. Indeed, they very rarely do, which is pretty good because goth chicks are just average ladies generally and most average ladies can't dress like novelty strippers and get away with it.

An ambulance would have room for someone to move around in it. Living people need someone in the back to make sure they stay that way until they get to the hospital. Corpses are much less high-maintenance.

Hmm. If only the paint could be switched quickly and easily, you could save a lot of money. Sometimes you wouldn't even need to take him out of the car except at the morgue.

If you look at the Miller-Meteor on that page, the ambulance has a higher top, and the one in the 2008 and 1960s picture you could stand in as long as you bent over a bit and weren't really tall.

Don't they have paintjobs where you can just peel it right off to a different colour underneath? Or is that just a hollywood movie thing?

wait, what does the paint job have anything to do with it? hearses don't necessarily have to be black. my friend owns one that is baby blue; they take it to hearse conventions. they have a black one too but the blue one is way prettier. It's the lights that switch, when it is a hearse it can have yellow flashing lights, when it's an ambulance it has yellow and blue flashing lights.

Hearse conventions?  I'm trying to imagine how that's not the most boring thing ever.  Maybe I just can't understand anyone liking hearses that much.  What do they talk about?  What are the hot topics in the hearse community?

From what I understand, it's mostly a roadtrip of hearses. Like a hoard of hearses. The people who own multiple nice hearses probably have a lot in common with each other... and I don't know, what do people talk about at comic conventions? That'd be soo boring, like they sit around and talk about comics all day??

That does sound quite boring.  I also don't understand comic conventions.  The two types of conventions I can understand are science conventions (people give talks about things that they've discovered, people demo new products, and it's a great networking opportunity) and gaming conventions (because people actually game).  Though, I guess road trip conventions are ones I understand, too, because they're actually using their whatever the convention is about (motorcycle, classic car, hearse, etc).  Road trip conventions sound much more interesting than comic conventions.

I suppose, but you would want it white and red for the ambulance around here so people realized you were an ambulance and not just some loony driving down the road at 80MPH with stick-on lights flashing. I suppose a lot of people do pull over before they even see you (the noise), so it might not be as bad as I would think.

it also seems like you shouldn't have the same color paintjob for ambulance duty and hearse duty, just like you aren't going to wear scrubs to a funeral. Maybe that's a more recent luxury.

Bassist, I think your first example explained perfectly that it is subjective, and people will find conventions absolutely fascinating that others can't see the point of. The science convention sounds boring, at least until they involve robotic replacement bodies, laser eyes, or functional wings for humans. Then I'll be interested.

I think it's important to realise here that most of the people who own hearses for non-commercial purposes are in Psychobilly bands and are married to Morticia Addams look-alikes. They mainly talk about upright basses, pomade and old B-Movies.

This is pretty much a typical hearse owner:

His hearse has a functioning flamethrower on the roof. He built it to attract the attention of this woman:

All of this is very, very

In fact it is probably the most legitimate American expression of the goth impulse.

Does that guy live in Colorado? I know I saw a picture of it from someone that lives in CO, but it could be a nearby state.

I wonder how he has to deal with the flamethrower to make it compliant with state law. I don't see anything relating to what flamethrowers are classed as (I'm pretty sure they don't count as a firearm), but I think it probably doesn't come up often.

The point of a hearse is that it is a vehicle used to carry dead people. This is not a complicated reason.

I was under the impression that the people at hearse conventions do not tend to use their hearses to carry dead people.  They tend to use them to, as Khar said, "to attract the attention of [that] woman."

Parse my language carefully. I didn't say that the point is to carry dead people, I said that the point is it's used to carry dead people. Subtle distinction.

You suggested that the point is they are impractical, but really that's just a side-effect of their true appeal, that they are used to carry dead people.

I see.  Still, I have trouble believing that this is practical in any way, shape or form.

I think that the fact that it was made to carry dead people is no longer completely the point of this construction.

Also, maybe it should be noted that I have accepted the appeal of hearse conventions, since it's not just people sitting around talking about hearses.  They get together and drive their hearses, and that I can understand though I don't share their interest in hearses.  Nothing where people just sit around discussing trivia about their hobby is the least bit interesting.

p.s.  I am expanding "science conventions" to really include all trade conventions because they're a way for people to conduct their business more efficiently.  I'm always a fan of being more valuable as an employee.  Also, trade conventions almost always happen in awesome locations to entice people to come, so there's that.

There's a theme song for that

Also at least the anime conventions I've been to in the UK consisted of a lot more than just sitting round discussing hobbies. There's a lot of drinking, public nudity and being touched inappropriately by a man in a Panda costume.

Weirdly, Surf Nazis Must Die! is not even in the top 5 most perplexing 'high concept' Troma releases. It is one of their most dissapointing however, as nothing could ever really match up to the title and poster art. I personally prefer Chopper Chicks in Zombie Town as the highlight of that era.

Classifying the whole psychobilly thing (which horror surf is an offshoot of) is tricky. Though psychobilly was invented in the UK (by The Meteors, and there are some top notch European acts (ranging from the traditionalists like Batmobile to a personal favourite of mine, swedish 'vampire country' act The Coffinshakers), by nature of its origins it's become a pretty American thing. It's picked up some deathrock associations over the years as well, the other great American goth style. When it was originally thought up by the Meteors they were marrying rockabilly with the horrorpunk aesthetic of The Misfits with rockabilly and Oi! style punk to create an apolitical form of punk music in opposition to the extreme, polar politicisation of the UK punk and skin scene at the time. It's not goth in the traditional sense, but goth is a chameleonic beast, and it has certainly grown closer to the goth crowd over the years, though there are still very punk and very rockabilly segments within the scene. I would say

Tim Burton is a curious case. I personally would call him an appropriator. He poaches goth aesthetics and repackages them for mainstream consumption. His relation to goth is kinda like the relationship of Good Charlotte to punk music. Okay, that's a little harsh: he's in that category of a dude who does things a lot of goths think are pretty neat sometimes (much like Johnny Depp really) but you couldn't really call him goth on anything past maybe Vincent. (Possibly Beetlejuice at the outside but I would fight you. Perkygoths are totally gay for the kiddies cartoon version though).

Also there's just the general problem of trying to get goths to accept showtunes. Not enough sparse, arctic TR-808 drumlines or piercing dub pedalled guitar or romanian accents going on*.

*Most goths know all the words to 'Phantom of the Opera' though. Just get one drunk and try it.
