The distinctions between rivet and goth may seem academic to most, but they are pretty definite.

I think what really confuses people is when members of each group pair off. In my early twenties I was friends with a guy who was definitely a rivethead and he was dating a lady that was definitely goth. In fact, I've ran into a few couples like that and only once was it the woman who was into rivet instead of vice versa; I tend to wonder if the fascination with militaristic images and power fantasy makes rivet into more of a young man's game. Like I said though, I only knew one of the couples pretty well, and from what I could tell, they basically got together because she was one of the few girls in town who didn't really care how much PVC he wore.

FORTRAN
I don't think goth is really right for fortran. It's cold and mechanical and efficient. I think you're after something darker, more mystical and slightly unnecessary. Like Haskell which is pretty much black magic.

Goth or not goth?.

Hehe. Saw this gem of a youtube comment on that page:

"My friend says that he's dating a goth chick and my friend is emo, is that right or not? Because I don't think that'll work. Besides, I'm an emo, possibly dating a goth chick."

He is right to worry. Goths and Emos cannot actually have children, as they're genetically incompatible.

I wish, it would be nice if Emos were genetically incompatible with the rest of humanity.

Of course, the girls in question are probably mallgoths.

I'm trying to find a photo of a friend of mine who has the opposite problem, he always wears a t shirt with the sleeves cut off, black combat trousers & army boots. I saw him the other day. He was wearing this.

I LIVE IN NOTTINGHAM, THAT'S IN ENGLAND, IT'S FRACKING COLD HERE.

He is also just over 6"7. I will never tell him I think he is crazy. (He used to play sir Guy of Gisbourne in the Tales of Robin Hood show, fearsome.)

Incidentally, if Robin of Loxley existed (he didn't, the myth was an amalgamation of several old stories, few of which were true) he would have been from Yorkshire.

I tend to keep my hair enclippened and don't dye it black because the black sort of wanders off even if I use the "super permanent fuck-you, hair!" black dye and I tend to wear Bauhaus or Sisters of Mercy t-shirts but I'll also wear a t-shirt with flowers on it or perhaps a weird critter.

Dear Dark Lord Khar,

I have a question that is not so much is something goth or not goth, but to do with goth plans. You see, the monthly fetish night is tonight(the only fetish event in all of town for the month, which will include public floggings, fire dancers, belly dancers, dominatrixs, etc etc). We'd really like to go, but I am just getting over the flu. Should I attend such gothy events?

Truly yours,

Tommy, you're forgetting the war of 1219 when Sheffield was stolen from Lancashire by the Yorkshire upstarts. Previously they had been confined to a small section of the east coast but in a sudden uprising a mass of armed horsemen with long, shaggy beards, thick Yorkshire accents and muddy boots stormed the areas to the west, south and north and claimed it as their own. That's why the east of Yorkshire is called the East Riding of Yorkshire when everywhere else is just "West" or "North" or "South"; it's a memorial to the brief but bloody period of history which formed the basis of the hatred between counties.

Or something.

'Now, there are two different types of goths, I would have to say. There are like the goths that are just like you and me, you know, just normal, everyday people, and then there are "elite" goths, and I say "elite" as in "uber." Um, the uber goths I think are, are very exclusive and "if you don't know me then you can't hang out at my party," and, you know, things of that nature. Like "if you don't come in costume then don't even bother walking in the door." Yeah.'
