I wasn't implying that we should deprive them of a trial. (Although it's quite obvious that the trial is a hoax, a media circus. If we expect people to be dense enough to read in it the True Grande Olde American Principles of Peace, Freedom, and Justice etc. etc. then we're pretty fucking dense, huh?)

I was merely saying it may be a bad idea to try terrorists/freedom fighters in such a sensitive location (both tactically and emotionally) as the neighborhood in which the attacks happened.

You know I can't even stand to look at photos of that man. I just wish I could forget about the whole affair - and the fact that something so unspeakably and unimaginably evil has become something of a joke in certain circumstances so soon after it happened is utterly depressing to me.

1) there is precedent for motions to hold trials other than where the jurisdiction mandates (because, if I'm not mistaken, the crimes were technically committed in the jurisdiction of the courts where the trial is being held) due to the probability of not getting a fair trial where the crimes were committed. 2) since I think the issue of them being enemy combatants is legally dead, the trial legally involves a simple, domestic criminal issue and as such does not warrant a trial at The Hague. Certainly it would make a little more sense than a kangaroo court, but hopefully that won't be the issue and I'd like to think that the trial is being held in the US to show the international community that he will get a fair trial here. Now, more often than not, whenever I have a hope that deviates from my standard cynicism, it is completely destroyed but I can always have hope.

Now, I'm nowhere near the US but even I can see that a fair trial for anyone involved is impossible on US soil.

Exactly. My point is that they're hopefully having the trial here to dispel those notions. Two years ago it definitely would have been impossible. I'm hoping the administration is trying to show that the leadership has changed and we're interested in being a sort of okay country again.
