Everyone in this thread is thinking inside such a tiny little box that I'm surprised any of your brains can still breathe.

Here is "Every Day I have the Blues" by Count Basie with Joe Williams:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNKk6gmqhkg

Listening to it is like being taken for a cruise in a perfectly-restored vintage Jaguar or Rolls Royce. This is one of those rare occasions where if you don't like something your opinion is demonstrably and factually incorrect.

Man Khar I know you are from Far Away but it just takes some suspension of disbelief for me to dig that somebody doesn't like Otis Redding. Like, I saw it coming, but I didn't believe it, so I had to try it anyway.

Simple. Groovy bassline.  Skronky guitars. Goofy lyrics.

This is a good suggestion.

I can dig it.

also, what the fuck does skronky mean? I like the sound of that word.

The only time I heard 'skronk' was in an interview with White Zombie's J., if that tells you anything.

Whoa hey where did those last few pages pop up haha did not SEE YOU THERE.

When we can't figure out the song, you must Whip It.

jesus christ fucking veto

I love this song but I can no longer stand it.

Also vetoing France Gall because I find her annoying and Edith Piaf is more talented.

Harry, I haven't even tried jazz and blues because it seems to be the first thing to go for a certain type of indie rock fans and most metalheads.

Also nobody vetoed Billie Jean yet. And fuck you Khar you can't blanket that.

Yeah, but "Summertime" is such an over-played song. It's like the "Yesterday" of the jazz world.

Boring. Veto.

We're thinking inside the box because there is only gonna be a narrow crossover box. I could start posting AMM and Sutcliffe Jugend and John Dowland and whatever but no one else would like it.

We're thinking inside the box because there is only gonna be a narrow crossover box.

That literally makes no sense at all to me. We're limiting ourself to a tiny, tiny cross-section of human music to try to appeal to as broad a range of people as possible? Then what the fuck is even the point of this thread?

Incidentally Khar, at this stage with all your vetoing in this thread I'm starting to feel like you're the Russia or China to the music sub-forum's U.N. General Assembly.

Also De_El if you're going to try winning people over to Otis Redding (a Good and Admirable cause) why use arguably the least soul-like of all his songs? I'd have gone for something like "You Don't Miss Your Water", except that I know people are going to Veto it as Boring because it doesn't have slammin' guitar solos or it's slow or they can only stand to listen to a song for ten seconds before passing summary judgement on it or because it's not cutting edge or whatever the hell else is going on in this increasingly pointless thread.

What would be a good CCR song? I've never met anyone that doesn't like Creedence.

Truuuuthfully (and more seriously), I haven't listened to many Jethro Tull albums as in depth as I would have liked. Thick as a Brick is a pretty notable exception, though.

I feel like if we're actually serious about getting a result out of this thread then maybe we need to be more methodical about it. So far everyone's posting songs they like and assuming everyone else is going to like them, but frankly we're never going to get anywhere doing that because there are just too many songs. So maybe everyone who's participating in this thread should give some idea as to what they like in a piece of music, so that we know what to look for?

Here's me: I like a very large range of music, but I really don't like anything much by way of metal, post-Sabbath. I like something where I can clearly hear all the different instruments, and the interplay between them. I'm not overly keen on most dancefloor-oriented electronic music because I find the repetitiveness of it boring and pointless. If something has Real Instruments actually being played by people it's going to increase my likelihood of enjoying it exponentially. I don't care if a piece of music doesn't have a vocal component. I like fast music and slow music pretty much equally. If the piece of music does have vocals, the lyrics have to be at least as good or as interesting as the music. As has been pointed out to me elsewhere, I tend to prefer music that was made by black people who are now dead.

Speaking of which: here's "Zombie" by Fela Kuti. You probably won't listen to it because it's an edited version and it still goes for ten minutes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBgewcFh-cg

I have a weird relationship with Sloan's music.  I started off disliking them automatically because my brother, who is an ass with otherwise terrible taste in music, used to like them a few years back.

I can't honestly say that I dislike this song though, now that I actually listen to it with an open mind.

Okay, so I've tried to collect all the things that weren't explicitly vetoed (there were a few ambiguous comments) and the list is surprisingly huge.

Hendrix - Little Wing
Bowie - Underground*, Starman, Space Oddity, Rock n Roll Suicide
Kraftwerk - The Model*
Devo - Whip it
Prokofiev - Dance of the Knights
Beatles - Helter Skelter, When I saw Her Standing There

I feel like if we're actually serious about getting a result out of this thread then maybe we need to be more methodical about it. So far everyone's posting songs they like and assuming everyone else is going to like them, but frankly we're never going to get anywhere doing that because there are just too many songs.

If that was the case you'd all be up to your asses in mainstream industrial music already. I grabbed the two I did because I figured they'd span a pretty good range and I'm really curious who doesn't like CCR. I mean. Really.

At the very least, if we're going to get anywhere  think we're gonna have to slow down.  Or maybe not, I dunno. I've either listened to or already known whether or not I like every song posted so far...I guess I'm just saying that I would be really surprised if no one vetoed any of the songs in this latest flurry of suggestions, but we're posting songs too quickly for people to hate on them and comment on why.

Edit: Spluff, Gene vetoed Whip It and John KVP vetoed Stairway.

Edit2: and scarred vetoed Sympathy for the Devil.

I mainly listen to neo-folk, chanson, deathrock, renaissance music, dream pop, black metal, psychobilly, power electronics, new wave, folk metal, calypso, crust punk, ethereal, surf rock, no wave, prog rock and dub, but sometimes I listen to death industrial, ambient, futurepop, space rock, free jazz, acid folk, goth rock, technical death metal, oi, 20th century classical, 60's instrumental rock, old school industrial, minimal wave, krautrock, darkwave and noisecore.

Sometimes I listen to other things.

Sometimes I listen to nothing.
