I believe Duke Ellington was vetoed unfortunely

Only "C-Jam Blues", and I suggested "Ko-Ko" and "Cottontail" instead, both of which are still unvetoed.

I'm just confused by the fact that there are two unvetoed Duke Ellington songs.

Come on, you've got more brain-power than that! You can handle it. If you listen to them I'm sure there won't be any more confusion: they're very different from each other.

I'm not confused by them being on the list, or I would have vetoed them. I'm confused by KickThatBathProf getting pissed that one of three Duke Ellington songs were vetoed.

Veto Baroness, I liked it until the vocals came in.

Updated list:

Beatles - Helter Skelter
Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin'
Moondog - Lament I "Bird's Lament"
Duke Ellington - Ko-Ko
Duke Ellington - Cottontail
The Zombies - I'll Call You Mine
Bob Dylan - Don't Think Twice It's Alright

Based on the fact that you posted soon enough after my post that it would have been impossible for you to listen to the whole song I must demand that you do so as a matter of honour.

I'm also going to be an uncultured hick and veto Ride of the Valkyries, even though it's a classic, as it is massively overplayed and conjures up memories of some awful, awful advertisements for me (not to mention "kill the wabbit").

The first contribution I can think to make on this (totally confounding) thread is Dave Brubeck - Take Five because it's probably one of the most easily groove-to-able songs I've ever heard and can be played at literally any gathering of people and be at least tolerated until the drum solo.  It seems like "classic" is slang on this forum for "not actually cool in any way" but come on, guys.

(I admit that I'm actually just kinda confused by RallyMonkey vetoing Stevie Wonder and Funkadelic, and Jimmy vetoing Clutch, Otis Redding, and Fela Kuti.)

OK, here are some more options that I think are reasonable:
The Budos Band - TIBWF
DJ Frane - I Am Dreaming
The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize???
Earth, Wind, and Fire - September
Gary Higgins - It Didn't Take Too Long
Soulsavers - Revival
Masters of Reality - Doraldina's Prophecies
Pretty Lights - The Time Has Come

For fuck's sake veto songs one at a time, guys.  It implies that you have actually listened to them.  Explaining yourself is recommended.

I just want to remind everyone that "most universally appealing" is not actually synonymous with "best."  It just means "the most people will be OK with it if their friend puts this on when they're hanging out."  What I'm getting out of this thread is that a few of you would be absolute hell to hang out with because I'd never get to play any music without pissing you off.

I would have gone with Rays On Pinion though the vocals would likely pull the same veto. Oddly enough when I opened youtube it recommended another Baroness song - Steel That Sleeps The Eye. All around good band thanks for mentioning.

I'm going to have to be a dick and veto that Duke Ellington song just because I've always found it pretty unexciting compared to most of his other famous compositions of the same period.
So you actually don't like it, or you think it's inferior to some of his other stuff? Because nobody is going to agree on the best, so I picked something that seemed like it would keep people's attention decently, but wouldn't annoy anyone, which by necessity usually ends up meaning it isn't the best, just okay.

For what it's worth, though, I like C jam blues better than either of the ones you linked. Not vetoing them, just saying.

I think you have a higher standard of like than I do. A lot of bands, I like their worst album, because it is still good, and I would still rather listen to it than a lot of other music.

That could be why I haven't vetoed anything yet, anything I dislike gets vetoed pretty much immediately.

That link needs fixing (for me, at least).

Also what the hell is up with vetoing something because it's boring.  I mean, doesn't that generally mean it's inoffensive?

As a musician, boring music pisses me off the most.  It means they haven't had any good ideas, nor have they managed to express anything or evoke any kind of reaction.  Why does that music exist?  Couldn't they have done something better with their time.  For that matter, like De_El said, couldn't I have done something better with mine?

Dave Brubeck - Take Five

No.  No.  No.  Never.  I can't stand "Take Five."  I don't even like Paul Desmond's sax playing.  VETO.

The Budos Band - TIBWF
DJ Frane - I Am Dreaming
Gary Higgins - It Didn't Take Too Long

YAAAAAAAAWN.  If any of these songs came on, I would fall asleep.  I almost did.  VETO.

Earth, Wind, and Fire - September

If this makes it after someone vetoed the far superior Tower of Power, I will be annoyed.  However, I do enjoy the song to some degree so I'm not going to take it down.

Now, though I grouped some together, I listened to all of them.

Aphex Twin - Film

The Bad Plus do a fantastic cover of this song on "These Are The Vistas."  Aside from the fact that cover exists, I'm perfectly okay with Aphex Twin's version.

I was actually going to suggest that way back on page 3 or 4 but I concluded that some phillistone would come along and veto it because they don't like his voice or because it's boring or because "it doesn't go anywhere" so I decided to save myself the distress.

Sometimes songs are pretty enough that they don't need to go anywhere.  All they need to do is be pretty.

Also, it does actually go somewhere.  It builds up, and then subsides.  It just doesn't have any harmonic changes.

I wasn't saying it doesn't go anywhere. I was suggesting that someone else who couldn't be bothered listening to it properly might veto it because they think it doesn't go anywhere.

Basically I was saying that if this thread has taught me anything it's that a lot of people are kind of stupid and obnoxious when it comes to listening to music they haven't heard before.
