Bring it On Home to Me by Sam Cooke

I like the way you think! I considered posting the version of "Chain Gang" from the same album (One Night Stand: Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963, for anyone who doesn't know. Get it.). The problem is that what might reasonably be thought of as the "official" versions, that is the studio recordings, of Sam Cooke's songs are much more polished, pop-oriented affairs which will appeal to a much smaller number of people, I think. Which raises a question: do we consider all versions of a particular song by a given artist? Or are we explicitly saying "this version and this version only"?

Harry that Cooke song is my go-to whenever I feel down. I like to put it on at the bar I do sound at and watch people smile.

It's nearly unassailable.  And One Night Stand is infinitely better than studio Sam Cooke.

Adjusted; the contents of the list is actually pretty surprising (some of the things on there I didn't even bother nominating because I figured it would get vetoed immediately). I guess the most popular songs on the forum are also the ones that inspire the most hate (and hence get struck down quickly), whereas the lesser discussed ones are generally met by indifference by the rest of the forum?

Hendrix - Little Wing
Bowie -  Starman, Space Oddity, Rock n Roll Suicide
Prokofiev - Dance of the Knights
Beatles - Helter Skelter, When I saw Her Standing There
We Are The Sleepyheads - Belle And Sebastian*
IGGY POP and the STOOGES "search and destroy"
The Fall - Last Orders
Summertime Billie Holiday
Jesu - Losing Streak
the kinks- you really got me
Rolling Stones- Sympathy For The Devil
Aritha Franklin- Respect
The Three Degrees - The runner
The Pogues - Fairytale of New York
Dead Can Dance The Ubiquitous Mr Lovegrove
Flight of the Conchords - You're So Beautiful
dick dale -misirlou
Helikopter Quartett, by Karlheinz Stockhausen
Nina Simone - Wild Is The Wind
Jethro Tull- Hymn 43
Ella Fitzgerald - Good morning Heartache
Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine
Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin'
Fear - New York's Alright If You Like Saxaphones
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son
Sloan - pen pals
Fela Kuti & Afrika 70 "Zombie"
Sex Bomb by Flipper
Sam Cooke - Bring It On Home To Me
Stevie Wonder - Sir Duke
Lord Invader - Rum and coca cola

Man anything but that! Sorry Dovey, vetoed for the lyrics of the opening verse, which I think are really terrible. I mean really:

"I don't believe in an interventionist God
. . .
But if I did I'd kneal down and ask him
Not to intervene when it came to you."

I so rarely care about lyrics. It takes some really obtrusively bad ones to ruin a song with a good melody (although I guess this thread is about trying to please everybody so whatev)

Silver Apples - Program

I really like this! Every time it seemed like it was going to start getting boring and repetetive it changed up. I didn't like the silly druggy psychedelic 60s lyrics much ("the flame is its own reflection", whatever you say fella) but that's not enough for me to veto it.

And in place of "Tear the Roof Off the Sucka" I recommend "Night of the Thumpasaurus Peoples"

What Is Hip?

If someone vetoes this, I'm really going to need a reason.  I don't currently know how it would be possible not to enjoy this song.

Also, keep in mind that we're not trying to find the perfect song, or a song that we love.

All I can think of everytime I see this thread title is Coldplay.

I mean, who can really get up in a ruffle over Coldplay? Seriously? Even if you don't like them it's kind of hard to hate them with a seething passion. It's pretty easy to just go 'meh' and feel nothing over them.

Is that the Blues Brothers/MGs horns in that clip? I swear I recognise some of those dudes.

The Tower of Power horns have done a lot of session work as a group.  Still, most of the Blues Brothers' musicians came from the SNL band, so it's unlikely that there was much crossover.

Both of these things, and the guy's voice is pretty grating.

So, you dislike well-executed music?  The guy's voice is unfortunately grating.  It's the best version I could find online (the album version is brilliant, plus there's a live version they put out with a best of collection that is good).

What?
Coldplay are probably one of the most disliked bands in the world (well disliked by hip people anyway since they still manage to sell millions of records) because of their blandness.

BB, I was really enjoying "What Is Hip?" for the first 3 minutes until it hit the organ solo.  That went on for a little too long, and then I felt like the song just should have ended before it.
