yeah "top 40" for purposes of this thread is referring to singles.

They can differ a lot here. UK radio is hugely dominated by the BBC, and unlike the US we have national stations. If a song were to be playlisted by Radio 1 and the biggest station Radio 2 it wouldn't need airtime anywhere else to get enough exposure to do well in the singles chart. Conversely, getting banned by the BBC from their stations would mean instant chart death if it was based on radio play, but the controversy surrounding the BBC's banning of Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood probably helped its enormous success. It also means songs can get pushed briefly high by their fans, like the recent Rage number one or Iron Maiden's sole number one hit Bring Your Daughter... To The Slaughter. Plus, you get the oddities lower down the chart, like Malcolm Middleton hitting 31 with We're All Going To Die.

I'm kind of tempted to say Bonkers. Partly because if Dizzee is never going to give us an album like Boy In Da Corner again (which wouldn't even make any sense at this point) then him knocking out chart behemoths is a pretty great consolation prize, but mostly because it really was just a hell of a lot of fun.

Single Ladies or Bonkers or In For The Kill, the latter simply for birthing this, which is the best song of 2009 by far.

Also, what's the deal with Lady Gaga? Leaving aside her videos, her songs are just terrible. They remind me of women tv quiz show presenter types; all polished and preened and made-up to look sparkly and "beautiful" but utterly dead behind the eyes.

That's what I like about it. Parts of Gaga's image is disturbing as fuck. The "Bad Romance" video is a brilliant piece of film, if you ask me. It perfectly complements and expands the already dark, creepy vibe of the song itself.

I was assuming generic bland mass-produced shit that you could probably make with a computer and save a lot of money on writers, performers, and people with any talent beyond lipsynching, but I was hoping I would be wrong and there would be something interesting to discuss.

I've watched a horror movie where this guy looks in mirrors and sees a different world reflected in the abandoned mall he's working at (anyone care to tell me what this movie is? I forget). Anyways, at one point, it shows as a woman's mouth is pulled open to the point where her jaw is literally ripped off of her head and I just couldn't stop laughing watching it because it was so incredibly fucked up.

But I can't handle weird eyes like hers, they fuck with my head too much.

Nodaisho - have you tried wikipedia? I know they have a list of all the number one hits.

I don't really like her videos; I find them kinda boring. The fetishy latex outfits don't really interest me and overall the whole vibe just reminds me of horror/sci fi movies where a character comes back to consciousness in a lab after some unknown event. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, I suppose, but it means nothing when stripped of a threatening narrative. It ends up boiling down to a kink that I don't share, so into the shit I don't care about pile it goes.

Also, I had a bunch of friends who were pretty into or at least dabbled in rivet in the '90s and another friend who was big on visual kei and played waaaaaay too much Shadowrun. Vinyl, latex and weird eyeware just means that to me you look like something out of one of my goofier friends' sketchbooks. Again, this isn't necessarily bad, but it's hardly going to faze me.

I would say Poker Face instead of Bad Romance. Also anything Weezy was in that was a hit, it could be the crappiest song otherwise but then he pops up and I love it no matter what.

actually speaking of terrible, i really would like to use this opportunity to say what a complete suckfest video phone is. fuck video phone. the only redeeming quality is that there's a spot where beyonce sounds like level three in mario bros (i think level three, the desert one where the sun swoops at you)

that's a good track but the novelty was somewhat dispelled by my having already heard velocity girl's "if you see kay" a million years ago.
