Fall Out Boy
« on: 08 Mar 2010, 18:29 »

Dude, why didn't anyone ever turn me on to this band? I mean I accept that if you'd tried to when they were big like 5 years ago I probably would have hit you, and I've made some pretty impassioned claims against them, but fuck, dude.

This is a good band! This is some awesome poppy ass rock music! I've only listened to cork tree so far, but I'm pretty psyched to scope out the rest of their stuff.

Sugar is a way better single than Dance, Dance though.

I'm not sure I'm ready to make the jump to Panic! At The Disco yet though. That still seems wrong.

Might check out some MCR some day soon!

If you are not kidding and being sarcastic, yes, I genuinely think Fall Out Boy were a good band. From Under the Cork Tree is their last good album though. Infinity on High was shit and I didn't even want to listen to Folie a Deux.

I enjoyed all three of those albums.  Folie a Deux tried to capitalize on a rather large amount of star power, there's a featured credit every other song or so.  Despite that, it's a bit heavier than their other efforts, and I'd put it very close to Cork Tree for my favorite album of theirs.

I do still have a special spot in my musical-cavity for Fall Out Boy, especially the older albums. I think their newer cd's have pushed out from the teenage angst and melodrama that launched them to deal with the issues in their lives now that they're successful rock stars and music executives. While normally I'm all for artistic growth and development, in this case... I've come to realize my attachment to their earlier stuff is mostly emotional, it brings to mind mindless high school melodrama. It reminds me of ex-girlfriends and how complicated I thought my life was. I like their earlier cd's because they're angsty and emotional just like I was as a teenager.

Fall Out Boy make such excellent excellent pop music and honestly it's pretty obtuse to suggest otherwise. The fact that I've never seen a band more eager to sell out and cram their entire existence full of product placement makes hard for me personally to support them in any way but that's my hang-up and I can't begrudge anyone else for liking them. Besides, everybody in the band who isn't Pete Wentz seem like genuinely nice and humble people and total music-lovers besides.

I heard they broke up last last year/early this year, though. Is that true?

They have an album with 3 different versions of the same song. An accoustic version, a pop version, and a CRUNK version.

I dislike this band for a GOOD reason.

As far as this third-rate supposed 'emo' that ended up quite popular a few years ago, Fall Out Boy were not really among the worst of it. 'Sugar' is truly an amazing pop song that I love while hating myself (a recurring theme in my life in general), and they have a handful of witty lyrics. But it's that 'wittiness' that they get too hung up on too much of the time and it gets very grating.

And then they broke up, so yay!

Um, I don't understand why such special ire is reserved for this band? Unless it is, as I mentioned, that the band's trajectory is pretty much an object lesson in selling out. Like I said, I get pretty uncomfortable with them for that reason to the point where I can't even bring myself to illegally download their records, but I'd be lying if I said I hadn't actively enjoyed listening to their songs when they come on the radio.

Also it occurs to me that the fact that I basically never find myself in a situation where I have to listen to commercial radio or watch music television or basically engage with mainstream culture whatsoever means that I'm basically immune to the negative effects of the kind of ubiquity that a band like Fallout Boy get, which is probably another reason why they seem to be a favourite for haters of all persuasions.

I imagine if I had to hear a song like "Thnks Fr Th Mmrs" (ugh) twice or more a day for any sustained amount of time I'd probably be joining in the fun myself.

Fall Out Boy was ok when Take This to Your Grave came out (pretty decently catchy stuff, for about half an album) and they played shows at the Arlington Heights Nights of Columbus and I could walk out because their performance was so horrible.  Terrible live band, sort of embarrassing.

I've never knowingly heard this Fallout Boy band but suddenly I am tempted to like them if the alternative is following in the footsteps of Oswald Moseley.
