I'm finally affected by the volcano after failing to put 2 and 2 together until getting an email.

2 (all flights out of Europe are grounded for a while) + 2 (my professor went to give a talk at Liverpool) = 4 ("Our class is getting ruled by a volcano")

God-dammit! We've worked so hard for so long to stop people getting confused about Australia/Austria and now we're gonna have to start all over again. Thanks a lot, guy.

After finding out at the weekend that Powderfinger were supposed to be playing Manchester in a couple weeks, I was pretty gutted I wouldn't have chance to see them since I'm completely broke - but then they announced they've postponed all the UK dates because of the volcano! Now I can go!

Cheers, volcano!

Okay everyone calm down and rock out to Neil Young.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=114fquphbMo

(For the record I do think that Bernard Fanning has a genuinely great rock voice, but he's tied it to genuinely mediocre rock music lately. I really liked some of their songs from three or four albums back, though, like the one that was on the Two Hands soundtrack.)

Would you like to hang with the interwebs here?

I am taking my wife for a break before she starts a new (and stressful, but I won't go into that) job.  I doubt I can fit the interwebs in without seriously dischuffing her, sadly.  Of course, if the interwebs fancy being around for a concert that I'll be at...

My mother-in-law was supposed to go on holiday but her trip got cancelled. Now she's pooring all her rage and the cash she got returned to her into clothing and assorted other ... stuff, I guess, for my coming kid.

Which is cool, and all, but I hoped she would have gone on that trip. Would have been nice for her. Plus I was really looking forward to NFL (baby)clothing.

I am kind of reverse affected now - over-the-corridor girl just got back and I am betting (possibly uncharitibly) that the kitchen will get substantially messier in the next few days.

I think it's quite ingenious, actually. If you want a pretty picture with lots of smoke and lightning, point a long exposure camera at the volcano at night. Not only do you capture lightning without needing absurd reaction speed, the lightning acts as a camera flash that illuminates everything for half a second, and for the rest there is darkness. It's ideal.
