it would be totally irrational if Faye got jealous of Marigold and Sven.

It would unfortunately be in character.

I hope she doesn't.

I doubt that Faye would be overtly jealous of Marigold and Sven, however, she may mask feelings of that nature (especially from herself) by acting overly protective of Marigold vis-a-vis Sven.

I suspect if actually confronted with the prospect of sex, Marigold would flee, screaming. Unless, of course, she was tanked on booze again, but I suspect it's going to take a bit of persuasion to get her to try that again. Of course, Sven presumably still has his 'look.' If he dares use it.

I'm fairly certain it was a telepathic phenomenon similar to gravitational lensing; where she can manipulate a person's perceptions around her towards something or someone else in the room.  For clarity's sake we could well just call it the Chatham Lensing Effect, as I'm sure her mother has a similar ability and has used it to close many a business deal in a stare-down with the competing CEO.  Hannelore simply is not consciously aware of the ability, yet.

Wouldn't that be the Chatham Shield? Actually, I think 'the look' failed on Hanners because she's more or less sexually innocent, especially as far as interactions go. Wonder if that would mean Marigold would be immune, too? Or is Yaoi replete enough with suchlike that Marigold would know what was intended?

Either way, now I've got Prince's "U Got the Look" stuck in my brain, with only myself to blame. Wait, no, jwhouk started this thread—I'll blame him. Yes, yes, that feels much better! The dream we all dream of.

Can't decide whether to give Faye a rimshot or a Beavis-Butthead snicker.

I suspect if actually confronted with the prospect of sex, Marigold would flee, screaming.
You must somehow confuse Marigold with Hanners.

Same reaction, different reasons. Hanners flees contamination; Marigold's flight would be induced by a cocktail* of fear of embarrassment, inexperience, and sheer awkwardness.

I think the only way Dora and Faye would give Sven a break and the benefit of the doubt is if news his previous attitude at the pub comes somehow to their ears. For example, it's entirely possible that Wil voices some concern about Sven to Penelope.

for comic #1656...

1. "cockatrice", heh.  It was both a chuckle and groan pun from Faye for the readers.

2. Gods help Marigold if Sven does use his "Come Hither" look.  [EDIT ADD: Though I always wondered what might have happened if Sven had successfully used it on Hannelore instead of Faye, way back when... 8-) .]

3. I always enjoy seeing Dora in the guardian role, in this case for Marigold.  Dora knows or feels that Marigold is not yet ready to handle someone like Sven (...yet?).  And with Marigold's recent heartbreak, another negative encounter (even if a casual fling) could backslide Marigold to her shut-in habits again, and I doubt even Hanners could pull her out again.

4. Poor Sven and the assumptions about him; either women throw themselves at him, or are ready to throw a book at his face.  Perhaps a friendly-company meal with Marigold by way of apology for stealing his Crusades...?

Exactly. And if nothing else, they both are likely curious just what all the fuss is about. And Sven was just starting to become less shallow, too... blargleblagh. Terribly risky for both and all because of Dora and Faye's overreacting!

I think I'm with you on this one, LeeC. Dora seems to be going way more overboard than necessary, and it's probably because of Faye and her own insecurities about Sven and her friends. (I can just see the wheels in her head going, "oh NO, not AGAIN". But I think if she's not careful she's going to alienate Sven (though I am surprised Sven hasn't done that to her!)

Also...wow Faye and Dora. I know Marigold is a totally socially inept person, but she's never gonna learn how to interact if you don't let her. She's embarrassed? Well, have her face Sven and give him the book and apologize, don't turn it into this horrible awful thing - that's probably only gonna make it worse.

Poor Sven.  Yeah, not something I usually think about him, but his sister assuming the worst about him can hardly be encouraging to him.  Granted, he's sort of earned the reaction based on his past actions, but his most recent behavior is quite contrary to the cavalier attitude he once had regarding other people's feelings vs. his needs.  Sven has basically gone cold turkey on dames.  Dora's reaction tells me that maybe they haven't been communicating much lately, which is sad as well.  Loved the angry postures/expressions in panel 3, and Sven's line to Dora in panel 4 -- Crazy Bitch(TM) is likely genetic, but there's no reason she couldn't have gotten it from both sides.

I completely agree with you here.  The impulse people (Dora being the prime example) seem to have with Marigold is "OMG protect her!", and it some cases that's great, but I think part of the reason she's still so fucking socially inept is that people keep doing this -- leaping in front of her to "save" her from whatever shit is going down.  I would very much like Marigold, at some point, to finally become frustrated enough with that to snap at everyone and say "Stop trying to protect me!  I'm not a delicate fl-- . . . oh crap."

Somewhere, probably at the library, Marten is sipping and thinking "Mmmm, soda."

Yep, having a room so messy that rats were living in it, severe social phobias - Marigold is the picture of mental health. Especially when compared with two people who are in at least in therapy and demonstrably getting better.

I don't think anyone is overreacting here, at all... especially not Dora. It's a sad, sorry thing, but the truth is, her entire life, Dora has watched her older brother fuck around with her friends, and considering what he did to Faye... no, she isn't being a Crazy Bitch, she's being a rightfully protective friend, saving her socially-inept* friend from the same horrors others have had to deal with.

*And while, yes, she won't get any less inept by their not allowing her to socialize... it would be nothing short of disastrous to let Sven do this to her. She can barely cope with the fact that her roommate doesn't want to kiss her - what would she do if she had her first time with Sven? And if he - as he seems to do a lot... - slept with another woman (Gina Riversmith take two?) it would utterly destroy her.

However, if she was to find a nice geeky dude who is not already interested in someone else and not, you know, sharing a home with her, I'm sure they would all encourage her to go for it.

Amen, Michi-Love. I was thinking it's nice how Sven's ignoring his own contribution to Dora's "Crazy Bitch" state. Some of the comments I've seen seem to want to base Dora's reaction solely on the Sven-Faye debacle, when really, that's just the frosting on a large, fecal cake Sven's been depositing over the years. And his defensiveness isn't doing much to demonstrate any changes. It is entirely possible to be depressed and still emerge the same asshole you were before whatever sent you into your nose-dive, aka some people never learn.

Still, he's probably thinking, "First I run into someone and drop my book, she grabs it and runs away.  Then I go into sis' shop for a drink, and maybe a chat, and boom!  Three people start pointing and screaming, I still don't have my book back, and now I'm being threatened with violence for something that hasn't even crossed my mind.  What's next?"

The "look" doesn't work on everyone. Of course, he claims he missed Hannelore and got Faye instead.

Actually, I think 'the look' failed on Hanners because she's more or less sexually innocent, especially as far as interactions go.

He did hit Faye with it by accident* - note her blushing in the last panel.

(...and it kind of worked, big time.)

*Perhaps not by accident, I suppose.

The overreaction comes from the fact that Sven really didn't make a move on Marigold.

Although I understand some of the sentiment against Sven, let's not forget here; Faye took the initiative.  All joking aside, it was not 'the look' which somehow seduced her; Faye well knew what she wanted, and for better or worse, she took the first step in having a physical relationship with him.  Sven's problem is that he was receptive, despite the fact that he well knew her problems.  If anything, the man lacks self-control when a woman offers him sex.  But Sven's obviously not going to attempt to seduce Marigold, I mean come on, has there ever been an example of him hitting on someone as naive as she is?  Marigold would have to take the first step here this time, and given her current state, does anyone think she'd actually do it?

Vivianca was dumb at least, which sometimes implies naive. In 798 Faye confronted him with being oriented toward "gullible" women.

Michi-love, other peoples, you got that backwards. Her "friends" were fucking around with her brother. He didn't go after them, they went after him. Some guys are really bad at saying no to unattached sexing, and he's one of them. If she were rational she'd be warning off Marigold based off previous patterns (that is, saying banging Sven is a bad idea), not threatening Sven. And the thing with Gina wasn't totally his fault- am I the only one who remembers Faye telling him they were just fuck buddies (well, words to that effect)? Sure, he was wrong and realized that and I'm not trying to minimize that, but still.

And if Marigold's issue was that Angus wouldn't kiss her she'd be fine. No, she freaked because she was utterly infatuated with him and assumed he felt the same- the wedding bells were practically ringing in her ears.

However, my suspicion is that their common ground in WoW (where I suspect they will turn out to be clanmates) is a setup by Jeph to bring them together into friendship, or mor-*herk!*

Dora knows from 526 if not from experience that Sven takes advantage of rebound situations.

Admittedly this is not a proper relationship portmanteau, but....

Sventigold?

(Or perhaps Svengoldi, from Dora's POV?)
