Nice attempts here by Faye and Dora, but one wonders if this will make Sven more of a target for Marigold rather than less - that 'Forbidden Fruit' thing and all.

Gonna be interesting to see how this plays out.

That is if Faye, Dora or Hanners doesn't kill him first.

Definitely.  Like any good stew, the current storyline needs time to simmer.

I know Dora has this 'He got more attention than me' complex from when they were growing up, but that doesn't mean she can meddle in his personal life.

Some of the characters act way too holier than thou to Sven.  His problem is lack of impulse control, but there's nothing inherently wrong with trying to have a lot of casual protected sex.  He never lied to Faye.  He lost her because she gave him an ultimatum and he went against it.  The entire cast acting like he's some manipulative scumbag is kind of overkill.

I think that Dora's (over)reaction to Sven is less about his interaction with Faye than about the apparently long trail of disgruntled blondes he's left in his wake.  It's all well and good to fuck around, as long as everyone you're fucking around with knows and accepts that you aren't gonna be monogamous.  (Faye wanted to be fuck buddies, then she changed her mind.  Sven knew she'd have a problem with him fucking someone else and did it anyway.  They both fail.)  Dora knows Sven's history, and it's seems to be a history filled with "Oh hey, Dora's friend is sucking my dick, awesome." and "This chick is hot, I'll give her my 'look' and we'll fuck, no prob."  Sven has been willing to stick his dick wherever he wants -- with astounding success -- and hasn't really cared about consequences.  At this point in his life, though, it seems he's rethinking things.  Doesn't mean he's gonna be all noble and shit when he's done being depressed, but I'm not willing to rule out the possibility that he might actually grow the fuck up.  All of them need to grow up, and they are doing so, but it's wicked gradual.  Good thing the process is always hilarious.  Well, in retrospect, or when it's happening to someone else.

Personally, I think it'd be awesome if he and Marigold became friends.  She may need someone other than her roomie to go to for 'brotherly' insights.  Sven is more likely to avoid getting romantically involved with her, not just because he's still on his lil' sex fast (heh, as opposed to the other way around -- zing!), but also because he'll probably want to prove Dora wrong.

It'll be interesting to hear what Momo thinks on the whole thing, assuming she hasn't been rebooting this whole time and has been listening in.  ^_^

To be honest, I don't thnk we've seen a lot of the cast interacting with Sven.  At least, not the guys (except Wil).  Marten, Steve, Angus ... ummm... not a lot of guys in this cast, I guess.  And even some of the ladies have had no more than a passing interaction, like Penelope.  Our opinions are based almost entirely on Faye and Dora (and Lydia, the intern).  And Lydia's one voice I'd kind of like to hear right now.  Last time we saw her, she was trying to turn him into a decent human being.

Maybe she's made some progress?

I think that Dora's (over)reaction to Sven is less about his interaction with Faye than about the apparently long trail of disgruntled blondes he's left in his wake.

Dora used to be blonde...

Nevermind.

More to the point, their Mom is blonde, and is chestier than her daughter . . .  I wonder how Sven would react if his proclivities for falling into bed with younger versions of his Mommy were pointed out to him.  Perhaps something similar to Marigold's morning reaction to bourbon.

No no, lets follow through with on this (I was already writing this up when you last two posted)!

But Marigold, despite her name, is not blond (nor is Faye), so her reaction still bugs me. But wait- Dora used to be blond, and their mother is blond... Oh Crap. That is some messed up (pop) psychology right there. I smell fanfiction!

Agreed. Every character we see him talk to, and way too many of our fellow forum-goers, seem to think he's an unmitigated douchebag, who may or may not be somewhere on the path to reform. It's like saying "oh, sure you're quitting" to someone trying to give up a drug- completely unhelpful, possibly detrimental. How would we feel if Faye was treated like this about her alcoholism? "That bar you just passed by and got mugged near the entrance of, the one that's kind of oily with a bad social atmosphere? Don't even think of going in there, or there'll be hell to pay."

I suspect that Sven's reputation precedes him. If we were privy to off-screen commentary by Dora, I'd bet her discussions about him would be "my lothario brother" (or less printable epithets, like say "Manwhore"). This would probably lead most of the rest of the cast to just pigeonhole Sven as "Dora's brother who sleeps around".

For most people, this is all they actually know about other people. I mean, Angus probably only knew Faye as "the brown-haired barista who sasses heavily", just as the girls only knew him as "that guy with glasses who comes in for an argument then leaves". I think if we all thought about it, there are some people we interact with on a daily basis who we only know one or two things at most about them - they live here or there, and they do this or that.

Sven's got a lot of growing to do (as does most of this cast - sheesh), but it appears that he's doing it. And in the meantime, enjoy the ride.

I don't think she's worse than before, it's just she's trying things she's never done, and not doing very well at them.

Also, it seems Momo is fully functional, she's just doesn't have anything to add (verbally) do the situation.

Her modesty sub-routine appears to be fully functional as well. (panel four)

It's hard to tell. It might be that its just the increased frequen- wait, she was almost perfectly fine at the Smif nerd-con, so nevermind, she does seem to be getting worse. I mean, she can't even frigging talk in this one.

The thing with the Smif Con was she was in her element.  Outside of that, she's just as awkward as ever.

She is trying new things, and the gang have brought her out of her shell so to speak, and that's what's making her appear more inept.  She''s probably doing things she has never done before and, on her own, would probably never do.

I'm surprised Momo hasn't shocked Faye at this point.

And if nothing else, they both are likely curious just what all the fuss is about. And Sven was just starting to become less shallow, too... blargleblagh. Terribly risky for both and all because of Dora and Faye's overreacting!

Several comments on Dora and Faye's overreacting. Is it breaking down on gender lines? Is it cuz I'm a guy that I say, give Sven a fucking break and stop being all Holier Than Thou?  I hated Sven's casual disregard of womens' feelings as much as anyone, but I don't feel he's in the wrong here.

Remember that Faye did NOT want commitment! So as crummy as you think the drunken Gina Riversmith slip was, STOP beating Sven up about it and putting Faye on a pedestal! If Faye was so hurt by Sven's slippage, I think he's been at least as hurt by her (and Dora's) unfair bullshit.  Or is this a Female-Entitlement issue, that you can declare a fuck-buddy relationship, but really mean YOU OWN HIM?  I call Double-Standard!!

Is it just me, or has Marigold gotten more socially retarded?

It's just you. Jeph just hasn't given her any lines in this drama/commotion. Like many other shy, introverted people, she's watching the people around her act like total douchebags, so I'm left seeing her as yes, more sane.

What, and going to bars and playing dressup was her element too? If she was this bad back then she would never have walked into that bar.

She was walking down the street and bumped into someone- and she's been speechless, except when with only people that she already knew, since then. That can't have been the first time this has happened to her, and I really doubt that her response was to freeze up and run every time, possibly with whatever possession smacked into her.

Is it just me or does Sven seem intrigued with Marigold?

Is the warning that Dora gave him causing some kind of reaction?

Is he fascinated by her tiny AnhroPC?

Is it the fact that she's the first female he's met in a long time who isn't throwing herself at him or scorning him for being a manwhore?

Funny, I was noticing that Marigold seems intrigued by Sven...
Understandable, he's the top of the male attractiveness scale, and even a brief fling with him would raise her status significantly, thus boosting her bruised ego and her subsequent dating possiblilities...

Or am I too cynical (realistic)?

It's all well and good to fuck around, as long as everyone you're fucking around with knows and accepts that you aren't gonna be monogamous.
The key point. This is what justifies the negative reaction to Sven. He was two-timing Genevieve (680) and although we don't know, we can guess what set off the Quebecouis girlfriend (can't find the strip! I'm a failure!) and the one who threw his guitar out the window (531).

Am I the only one who thinks that what Faye's doing to Momo--who, like the other AnthroPCs, is a sentient being with feelings and not a toy--is really assholish behaviour? And then, in the last panel, she dares to tell Sven to "stop that," when his "Boo" was nothing compared to what she's doing? I've just lost a lot of respect for Faye.  :x

The key point, indeed!!  Maybe because I've been an adult for the same decades as female empowerment, I've seen women playing the same games as men. I'm not going back to parse every affair of Sven's, to figure out who accepted his obvious wandering, and who was mightily (foolishly) offended. Did most of those blondes really believe she was his One And Only??

Re: Tomart --
Is there a reason to think Marigirl understands the social game well enough to try for a trophy boyfriend?
She probably does in theory, from so many anime plotlines around social games, but not experience. So any moves toward Sven would be stepping into deep waters for her... hence Dora's concern. I'm the last person to want to see Marigold hurt, but I have respect for her resilience and inner strength, unlike some. She has been pushing herself out of her comfort zones, and may be getting googly-eyes for Sven (that guest strip art was good!) but someone should warn her that she'd only be another notch for him.

But more importantly, there are dramatic possibilities for Jeph here!

Christ, he's flirting! Kick 'em inna fork!

If Faye was so hurt by Sven's slippage, THAT'S ON HER!  Or is this a Female-Entitlement issue, that you can declare a fuck-buddy relationship, but really mean YOU OWN HIM?  I call Double-Standard!

Again, Dora's reaction is not about Faye. This is about Sven's lifetime of behavior, either douchy or non-thinking (the Faye thing is just a part of that), have it as you will, catching up to him.

Michi-love, other peoples, you got that backwards. Her "friends" were fucking around with her brother. He didn't go after them, they went after him. Some guys are really bad at saying no to unattached sexing, and he's one of them.
You write as though Sven simply picked up some  of Dora's friends at school. They went after him in the Bianchi house, sleeping over with Dora and posing as her friend just so they could get to Sven's room. Even the dimmest bulb would have to figure that out after a while, and whatever else he may be, I've seen no evidence that Sven is stupid. What I have seen plenty of evidence for is that he tries really hard not to take any responsibility for any damage, any hurt he causes.

Sven put his dick before his sister's self-esteem and feelings, which tells me he is a dick, or was. I don't really think he actually sets out to be such, but I also don't think Sven spends much time, if any, worrying about what happens to other people, and the damage he causes is the same. That means that Dora, who does care about what happens to other people (probably as a result of being shit on by her brother), winds up having to run interference to save her friendships or just to save girls she likes from being screwed over, literally. Having to be Sven's 'keeper,' taking responsibility because he won't, is enough to make anyone edgy, to say the least—hence the blow-up a few comics before the one I linked to. Want any more proof? His thought is never "I might hurt someone," is it? It's "Dora's going to kill me." Christ, Sven lets his sister be his conscience. After all, why should he have do that job?

And, no, Sven doesn't deserve a break about the subject until he actually shows he's changed, and moping in a bar doesn't exactly scream change to me—it could just as easily mean "poor me, I feel bad, and I don't know why." And Dora's nicer than she should be: right now, she could (and possibly should) be whacking him on the back of the head. Yes, you could say "Sven doesn't know what Marigold's situation is, yadda yadda," but the truth is, until he shows her otherwise, that as far as Dora knows, he doesn't care. So she has to play grown man (and I use the term very loosely)'s conscience again.

Good analysis, raoullefere. Got me to re-think some.

But:
And Dora's nicer than she should be: right now, she could (and possibly should) be whacking him on the back of the head.
What? At the moment she took him outside, he didn't even know who Marigold was.

Nope - it most certainly is (and is it just me, or has Momo shrunk? I'm pretty sure she was at least 1.5x the size she's been since she climbed into Marigold's hoodie before, just smaller than Pintsize)

And Momo must REALLY be regretting her insistance on going for a Mari-ride now...

I used to throw my children up in the air and catch them; they liked it.

And I've done the same with my nephews, who also liked it. But on the odd occasion when I would pick one of them up and he said "No" or struggled or whatever, because he wasn't in the mood, I would respect that and put him back down.

Leaving aside the fact that Momo isn't a child (she looks like one, but clearly has an adult's intelligence), in today's strip she is clearly not enjoying being tossed in the air, and yet Faye is either oblivious to that or deliberately ignoring it for her own amusement. Hence my disgust with her in this comic.

I've mentioned this before, but Faye's experience with AnthroPCs comes just from Pintsize. And you know Pintsize. So there is no reason for her to have any respect for artificial intelligence.

Sven, on the other hand, went from *crazy bitch victim* to *being a dick* in the space of, uh, maybe five minutes. Marigold is obviously still embarassed as hell that she just took some guy's book like that, Sven could at least try to tell her "No hard feelings" or something.

Also, Marigold running away from Sven's boo is cute as hell.

Poor Marigold.

Poor Momo.

Poor Faye in 3... 2... 1...

*BZZZZZT*

Anyone else realize that Panels 1 and 4 are just more opportunities for Faye to peek under Momo's skirt? http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1624

I think Faye might be... a Robolesbian. Maybe just Robo-curious.

Maybe Ro-bi-curious, but I don't think a Robolesbian.  True, she's never shown any physical curiosity about Pintsize or Winslow, but they're not dressed - nothing to be curious about!  But Momo's a lot more humanoid than the others, and obviously has something to hide with the cute sailor's outfit.

I wonder what Faye would have done with Hanner's trainer-boyfriend (especially with the tackle upgrade)?

In all honesty, I'm sure it's just the curiosity of a good engineer - "I wonder how far they went with this...?"

Blah blah blah.

I want them to be friends, so she's all less awkward, and no one has to worry about him fucking her. To me, that would not make sense for either of those characters.

But I do want them to become friends, because I like Sven and Marigold both... oh, and as everyone keeps mentioning, the WoW connection seems fun. I'd just love to see Marigold actually interacting with him instead of cowering in fear. Yeah.

Is it just me or does Sven seem intrigued with Marigold?

Funny, I was noticing that Marigold seems intrigued by Sven...
Understandable, he's the top of the male attractiveness scale, and even a brief fling with him would raise her status significantly, thus boosting her bruised ego and her subsequent dating possiblilities...

Or am I too cynical (realistic)?

I personally don't think any thoughts of Sven other than "omigodomigodomigod he's gonna KILL me for taking his book" have entered her mind at this point.

Momo has most DEFINITELY shrunk. She should be larger than the book, and in that last panel she looks like she's smaller.

Good analysis, raoullefere. Got me to re-think some.

But:
And Dora's nicer than she should be: right now, she could (and possibly should) be whacking him on the back of the head.
What? At the moment she took him outside, he didn't even know who Marigold was.
I meant after the 'boo.'

No, I agree that Faye has repeatedly acted inconsiderately towards Momo. And regardless of her interactions with Pintsize, she's now had interactions with Momo and learned a little bit about what Momo expects, so to act like that towards her now really indicates her mean, bullying streak.

And, no, Sven doesn't deserve a break about the subject until he actually shows he's changed, and moping in a bar doesn't exactly scream change to me—it could just as easily mean "poor me, I feel bad, and I don't know why."
At least with the "poor me" stuff it is possible he is trying to figure stuff out. He very well could just be moping, it is true and probably more likely, but there is the chance that it is growth.

and I think in the same situation I would have done the same thing as sven.
Me too, LeeC. Me too. And really, just because. It's not that often you run into a person who apparently can't respond at all, so you just want to trysomething to know if that works. I thought Sven took it easy on her, actually.

Sven, on the other hand, went from *crazy bitch victim* to *being a dick* in the space of, uh, maybe five minutes. Marigold is obviously still embarassed as hell that she just took some guy's book like that, Sven could at least try to tell her "No hard feelings" or something.
I really think he was trying to (with the whole "I'm glad you didn't drop it or throw it away") and he did tell her thank you and he quite possibly could have been getting to the "no hard feelings" part of it, but she was just standing there. Kinda unresponsive to his words. Looking terrified. Sure it wasn't nice, but like I said, probably was something I would do to. You don't really expect someone to look terrified when you're trying to thank them for something. So is she actually listening? He tested that.

I actually think that when Sven and Marigold finally get to know each other that they will find out that they already know each other - Think back to comic # 1424, It is hinted that Sven spent most of his time after the breakup with Faye sitting around playing World of Warcraft and sleeping. He managed to write one song, but it implies that he is an avid Warcraft player. It isn't a huge stretch to think that they might already know each other through the online game alone - Hell, they could be a part of the same guild and not even know it.

If not - at least they have something in common that they could talk about.

Oh god damn it, you beat me. It does strike me as funny that Momo would be preprogrammed for AzuDai poses when tossed in the air. I was half-wondering if she was going to pull a Kagura there for a minute.

Edit: As for her size, would it really surprise any of you if Marigold had a super-small spare body for Momo lying around somewhere for ease of portability? It's like the AnthroPC equivalent of a netbook or something, except it's tossable and has a built-in tazer.

That bothered me too. Even if Momo-tan were a toy, she'd be someone else's toy.

+4 Insightful.

Did anyone else notice that Sven might have shrinking powers? I mean, why is Marigold one head shorter in the last panel? Hiding behind Faye can't do that much.
Marigold is a shrinking violet.

It's different in this case: your children were enjoying it, whereas Momo-tan did not seem happy at all.

Adult intelligence for sure, and capable of taking charge of a situation, but considering the arc where she played WoW for Marigold, she was not acting particularly mature.

I like this! Momo seems to be a top-of-the-line model, it would make perfect sense that she'd come with accessories such as a compact chassis.
