Also "foreign", "neighbor", and "weight".

Weigh cool.

Other than foreign, they DO follow the "sounding like A" part of the rule.  In fact, neighbor and weigh are in the little rhyme...

I before E, except after C, or except as an "a", as in neighbor and weigh.

And English is a funny language to begin with. Someone out there once posted a quote about German barmaids and English, but I'm not remembering it enough to throw it up here.

EDIT: Found it - "English is the result of Norman soldiers attempting to pick up Anglo-Saxon barmaids, and is no more legitimate than any of the other results." (H. Beam Piper, science fiction author)

Can't believe nobody's brought this up yet, but here goes...

"Teacher: I before E except after C and when sounding like A as in neighbour and weigh and on weekends and holidays and all throughout May you'll always be wrong no matter what you say!

"Seppuku?"
Is it even possible to commit seppuku with a katana?
Unless Hanners was thinking of using a shorter blade herself, with Marigold acting as her kaishakunin.

Naturally, reading today's comic, I keep thinking of Lonesome Dove, wherein Gus keeps asking the whore camp follower (literally) for a poke, and he doesn't mean ticklin'. Well, ticklin's not all he means—sometimes ticklin' can't be helped during a poke, at least if it's a thorough one. In any case, this makes 'pokeslut' something like a one-word tautology. (I'm confident someone will supply the correct term, which eludes me at present).

Weigh cool.

How does Hanners' face work again? Panel 2, turbocute. Panel 4, turbocute. Panel 3... maniacal spree killer?

I know a lot of people (myself included) like to hypothesize about any prospects Hanners might have for a meaningful sexual relation, a solid emotional connection with a committed life partner with fulfilling physical intimacy... and then she gets poked in a three-way.

Oh, and a lot of people, myself included, you can't tickle like that... we'd pee ourselves on the spot.

I suspect Hannelore would probably get right up to the point where she's about to take the sword, notice some sort of odd stain, ask "when was the last time you cleaned this blade?" and then refuse to go through with it on hygiene grounds.

I'm really hoping this is true character development on Hanners' part and not some temporary plot device that's going to go away and turn her back into her totally neurotic self.

Hanners' neurotic behavior has been the source of some good comedy, but long-term character development is always good. One thing I've always been able to appreciate about QC (and one of the reasons it continues to be my favorite web comic) is that Jeph does a good job of making his characters feel real. They may be very self-aware, but they develop and improve over time. Hanalore could only be super-neurotic for so long before it got stale, so it's cool that Jeph's taking things in a slightly different direction with her before we reach that point.

My guess would be no. Marigold told Momo it was time to leave in Thursday's comic, and she wasn't in her state of socially inept shock, which suggests he already left.

I'm positive this is a long term change for Hannelore, Jeph practically telegraphed it with the 'taking care of Marigold' storyline.  And while I still don't think it's a very realistic representation of how OCD operates, I'm glad she's beginning to 'get over it'

Over some of it, at least. There's more to Hannelore's issues than just OCD. Plus, the fact that she's followed by a therapist has to count for something.

Haphephobia is not OCD. She might not be afraid of physical contact anymore, but she might still have to arrange her silverware in a specific pattern or compulsively count things.

Hmm... my computer was glitchy with a few websites yesterday, it must have kept animated gifs from running too.  Don't know why it's suddenly fixed, but I'll chalk it up to dumb luck and move on...

Haphephobia is not OCD. She might not be afraid of physical contact anymore, but she might still have to arrange her silverware in a specific pattern or compulsively count things.

It wasn't just physical contact, she was excessively afraid of anything 'dirty'.  That type of fear usually doesn't just go away, and it was unrealistic that she'd be having these problems for however-many years the comic's been going and then is suddenly able to push past them in order to help her friend.  That said, it's a comic, so I'm not incredibly worried that it stays realistic, I just wanted to voice the concern.

You're right, they don't go away (and haven't).  But she's been pushing her boundaries, and (right now) having them pushed by others.  She was there to "do what needed to be done" with Marigold, and I'm sure she washed thoroughly afterward.  She's proud of herself for coping, and she's having a "good day".

It's not making all the difference in the world, and she's not going to change overnight (come on, does anything in this comic happen that fast?), but she's learning to cope a little better.

Sometimes that's the best you can expect!

Three pounds, four ounces
I think you are far exaggerating the substantiality of cool. Even James Dean's cool couldn't have topped six ounces.
Ah, but you are measuring California cool, a thin and insubstantial source. Up here in the northern plains, we harvest the cold during 40 below winter days and recycle it as cool throughout the year. Fonzie, a good Milwaukee boy, ran through more than 10 pounds a year all by himself.

No, no, NO. It's "Aayyyyyyyy."

Geez. You outsiders can't speak it without an accent.

I've listened to and read far too much of Garrison Keillor, not to mention listened to too many hours of Whad'ya Know?, to begin to swallow this.

Other than foreign, they DO follow the "sounding like A" part of the rule.  In fact, neighbor and weigh are in the little rhyme...
Here are a few other exceptions to the rule: either, eider, ageing, protein, and absenteeism.  I'm sure there are a lot more!

What does it mean that Winslow is apparently asexual?
I don't remember which comic strip it was in, but Winslow yelled at the Roomba for trying to move in on "his" girl (Hanners), and he took over the robot boyfriend body that her dad sent her when she decided to experiment.  He's just not as rude about it as Pintsize.

Come to think of it, there was that one line when he was in the boyfriendbot body about wanting to grab things.
