It's hard to pick a favorite, but when I printed one out for Jeph to sign, it was 787 ("Think about dogs").

Anyone else?

It is really hard to chose only one strip, they are too numerous.

I had 65 minutes of free time, so I decided to use my browser tabs to host a shootout tournament (depth-first). From strips 1-64 the best for me is no.30, it beat no.4 in the final. Now, time is up and I have hard time to chose best from 65-96. It will be either no.84 or no.71. As for why: I do not have time. ;)

Whoops!  I thought I covered my bases with both the US and British spelling of "favourite".

My favourite is:

http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=228

I like it because Dora's advice was a turning point in the story.  Beforehand Marten wasn't even thinking of spending time with anybody other than Faye.

I also like http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=508 and http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=567 because, in them, Faye admits her feelings for Marten.

{edit}QED, thanks for those.

Don't feel bad, neither of those searches would have turned up "Best".

Because it perfectly encapsulates both Marten's and Hannelore's basic personalities, contains both wacky hi-jinks and Hanners being adorable, and it's funny too. Basically it's the perfect QC strip.

Let's consolidate them all on the wiki at http://questionablecontent.wikia.com/wiki/Best_Questionable_Content_strips rather than risk them getting lost in hard-to-search forum archives.

That's a stupid idea.  Considering the fact that anyone could have any strip as their favorite, you potentially could end up with a page that just lists every comic.  You need to have better criteria for choosing the "best" strips than just strips people consider their favorite.

Criteria rules:

1. Teh Funny.
2. Memorable Moment.
3. Great drawing.
4. Plot advancement.
5. Jeph likes it, too.

Any strip that hits on all five is a Hall-Of-Fame Classic.

This makes sense.

The requirement for "great drawing" would rule out a lot of classics from the early days, though. And we only know Jeph's opinion for a very few strips.

You can't apply criteria to favoritism.

If you could, it wouldn't be.

Well, that's not exactly true.  You can't apply one specific criteria to multiple people, but each individual can use their own criteria to choose their favorites if that is how they pick.

Anyways, the criteria isn't for favorites, it's for picking which strips should be listed on the "Best Comics" page on the wiki so that we don't just get a page that lists every comic (which would be the inevitable result if we just listed everyone's favorites).  Perhaps the easiest requirement would be strips that a number of people agree as being their favorite/the "best" (as opposed to ones just anyone picks as their favorite).

I don't know, making a "Best Of" list is kind of futile as most of the time not everyone is going to agree no matter what criteria you use.  It really should be a "Pretty Decent Selection Of" instead lol.

To get back on topic, my favorite I think is 564, where Dora kisses Marten on the rooftop.

That did combine plot advancement with "Yes!".

I just came up with those five as examples of what makes a favorite strip. I'm sure you could probably come up with a few more criteria to make it more balanced, so it's Not All About Teh Funny.

What makes a favorite strip is a strip that is your favorite.  People have different reasons for a strip being their favorite, so you can't really use one specific criteria for everyone (otherwise, like Carl-E said, it wouldn't be their favorite, just their favorite strip that also meets those requirements (excluding when it's a  person whose favorite strip actually does fall within the criteria, of course)).

I understand completely. The five things I listed are reasons I would give for why a particular strip is my fave.

In fact, I'll even give a fuller list:

  • Teh Funny. (A strip that always makes you laugh when you see it.)
  • Memorable Moment. (The Roomba flying out the window.)
  • Great drawing. (Admit it - the background imaging during the Faye's Dad flashbacks were awesome.)
  • Plot advancement. (Dora kisses the boy, Steve hooks up with Cosette, etc.)
  • Jeph likes it, too. (If the artist likes it, that's always a plus.)
  • Introduction of a notable character (i.e., Hannelore, Momo, Marigold)
  • Major character development/reveal (Strip 504. Enough said.)
  • Memorable quotation (i.e., "Baking is Science for Hungry People!")

It's possible that a "Best of" list might irritate Jeph, whose distaste of popularity contests is well-known in these here parts. Remember when he urged us all to boycott the "Best Webcomic" poll someone was running?

This is true.

However, I think we can pretty much come to a consensus on a handful or two of strips that rise above the rest.

500-509 would be in a category all to themselves, personally.

Perhaps samples from categories would be a better way to go.

Riffing strips (my favorites, in fact)
AnthroPC hijinx (with pintsize as a category unto himself)
Hanner's issues (at the zoo, with the construction workers)
Relationshipocalypses (Marten and Dora's tiff about Cosette, the end of Steve & Meena, Marten confronting Ellen, etc., although these are usually arcs)

Just a few off the top of my head.
