Fuck this game.   I lost a fairly significant bet because Chinese Democracy actually came out first.

This is the third time it's been 'official'.

It's so old now, it's to the point that the gameplay innovations developers were implementing are no longer innovations.

I have a little more faith that Gearbox will do something with it, though.

I'm not quite sure why you'd want to pick up creating a game that every has the highest expectations for.  The company's image might get crucified for it if the game doesn't meet expectations.

No no, it was official by 3dRealms. Like you said, this is official by someone who has actually completed a game in the last 14 years and it was actually shown off at an actual con. I'm pretty certain this is the official end times.

As far as expectations, in all honesty if it hits store shelves it will have already body slammed every single person's expectations into oblivion.

Seriously.

my expectations end at "it's never coming out" so it's already exceeded them to the maximum limit. I proably don't care though. I mean really...Duke Nukem? so irrelevent.

I just heard about this on another forum. I'm also wondering why Gearbox took this project, but for a different reason. Nobody cares about Duke Nukem anymore, don't they have anything more interesting to work on, like another Borderlands or something?

That's what I was wondering.

President: "Alright team, we've got two options: we can try, against all odds, to make Duke Nukem Forever and not have to go out of business...OR we can make a sequel to our popular, smash-hit Borderlands and improve it in every way, raking in the dough along the way. What do you think we should do?"

Peon: "huh what? The first thing, I guess. I wasn't really listening."

President: "Duke Nukem it is."

Peon: "goddamnit"

Man, if I was a dev I would jump on the chance to make DNF just to be able to say "we're the fuckers who did it". Even if it sucks, even if it's the worst FPS of the last 20 years, the glory of having finished gaming's biggest punchline is worth it.

I think that perhaps you guys are seriously underestimating the nostalgia value of Duke Nukem and the hype that the conclusion of the internet's longest running meme will produce.

As far as I'm aware, Gearbox is an independent game development wheelhouse, which is an increasingly rare thing to see these days. Even with the relative success of Borderlands they may not have the luxury of being picky.

I don't really think nostalgia would be enough to take Duke Nukem beyond being a low rent novelty release if the gameplay isn't there. It's easy to forget now in this post Counter-Strike everything-can-be-modded world of ours, but Duke Nukem wasn't just a cheeky game with titties and pig cops. The maps were pretty inventive for the day and the title took the faux 3d sprite based shooter about as far as the model could go. Quake's robust modding community and next gen engine would eventually dethrone Duke, but for a while there it was a tighter contest than is readily apparent from just looking at engine capabilities with the benefit of hindsight. I mean, let's face it: for all their technical excellence, Id games tend to be as dull as dishwater when it comes to the little details. God bless John Carmack for all he's done for 3d gaming, but forgive me if I point out that a shotgun and a super shotgun isn't really a very compelling and diverse set of gameplay tools. Meanwhile, Duke 3d had jetpacks and trip mines. Combine that with elevators and Duke had a real edge when it came to dopey fun like booby trapping hallways and camping your friends until they got so mad that they tried strangling you with your own mouse cord. Duke wasn't truly revolutionary, but it was about much fun as you could have with a pc for a good 8 or 9 months even without the low brow humor.

End of the first level:

Quote from: Kotaku
Cue the Duke Nukem Forever logo and a camera pulls back to show that Duke, in first-person, was playing a video game. He's got a gold Xbox 360 controller with the face buttons re-named as D, U, K and E. There's a busty lady in a schoolgirl outfit near the bottom of your first-person view. And there's a second one. One stands up and wipes her mouth.

"What about the game, was it any good?" one of them asks.

"Yeah, but after 12 fucking years it should be," he answers.

Best. Game. Ever. Fuck you, haters.

So, speculations?  Will it be an open world game like Borderlands or more linear.  Will you be able to "duke" it out with friends online in multiplayer?

Linear. Maybe not in the old Duke sense, but at least in the Half-Life sense.

Multiplayer has to 100% be a go or else it's not Duke.

It is confirmed to have multiplayer. The previews have Randy Pitchford saying that the game will not ship unless you can shrink your friends and then step on them.

Beyond that, I believe I read an article stating that there will be some vehicular sections, and that it will not be a short game. Somewhere between 15-30% of the game ideas have been ported from the old DNF, the rest is from scratch, allegedly.

i'd say it's the sense of humor that makes the duke. will this game be making fun of current genre conventions in action games and films? along with the wider popculture? will it take a 'nostalgic' route as an overexadurated throwback to the games of the 90s?

i like this:

ALWAYS BET ON THE DUKE!

I've never lost faith, even have an idea of how the start of the game would be:

Duke Nukem for 1 reason another is a shell of his former self, and is now working a standard day job as an office drone, when he gets a call from his estranged daughter (a teeny bit yahtzee inspired here) in the babe resistance that they need his help.

Duke Nukem dusts off his gun for old times sake and the introductory level plays like a standard cover shooter, duke has to hide behind a wall to regain hp, moves around in a realistic (slow, has to press shift to sprint) etc..
Just like the standard fps nowadays really, and the enemies fight in a similar manner.
Also the level would be shades of grey and brown.

The goal of the level would be to retake duke's sunglasses, as soon as he puts them up the duke nukem music starts playing, the wisecracks starts flowing, the level colors suddenly become more varied and what was once the button to hide behind cover is now the kick button to destroy said cover. Also his hp bar shows up again and he moves around in the old skol gliding way.
Standard tutorial shows up to explain these functions but Duke punches them away, proceeding to go on an old skol killing spree with enemies desperately trying to find cover and fight in a "realistic fps" style, which Duke neutralizes with his old skol ways.

A man can dream :)

Apparently Gearbox now outright owns the Duke Nukem intellectual property:

Good? Bad? Meh? Time will tell.

The big question for me is, with Gearbox owning the Duke Nukem IP, what the fuck is George Broussard and the rest of 3D Realms doing? It's not like they announced this as they were shutting down or anything, nominally people are still getting paid to make video games there.

The article that I read (can't seem to remember where it was posted... probably Kotaku, but I can't be bothered to track it down) indicated that DNF work continued as basically a hobby for ex-3D Realms guys post-cancellation, and they reached out to Gearbox and it was all taken care of. Broussard is working on the game, at least. As for the other developers, I have no idea, but this isn't the first time a game would be wrenched from a studio's hands.

*edit - here's the article.

i got to play this at pax and went to the gearbox panel.

i can say that the demo was fantastic to play.  i believe gearbox will make the game that people will want to play if they are fans of duke nukem.  i can also say that it will be a game that people will want to play even if they are not fans of duke nukem.  it's hilarious, the gameplay is great, it looks good graphically.

there is a story behind why gearbox picked it up.  i have no doubt that gearbox will deliver this game and it will do exceedingly well.

but now we have to find a new game to be the poster boy for vaporware.

I hope not, although since they are working on Portal 2, L4D and L4D2 DLC, the constant TF2 updates, and something related to DotA, you are probably right. Wonder if they are aiming to release Portal 2 and Ep3 at the same time, since I seem to remember Ep2 promising an aperture science tie-in (it has been too long since I played it).

Isn't portal aimed for late 2011 at best? And Ep3 hasn't even been announced formally yet?

I just realized that if Episode 3 comes out in 2013, it will have taken as long for it to come out after ep 2 as the original HL2 did after HL1.

I wonder how many of their 225 employees are working on it.

I seem to remember Ep2 promising an aperture science tie-in (it has been too long since I played it).

Judith Mossman went to explore the Borealis (a lost Aperture Science research vessel) and subsequently disappeared, so Gordon has to go there to find her and complete the mission or discover some lost technology or something to that extent. It's been a bit since I played Episode 2, but I don't remember it going into much detail.

That was a pretty awesome strip just to have Mike draw like he did 12 years ago.

Also, right after reading it I searched the archives for references to Duke Nukem. They have seriously been making jokes about DNF since 1999, which makes the fact that it finally hit the hands of the public at PAX of all things even better,
