So I went to the local critter shelter today. Their black friday special was name your price on all critters. It was both a disappointing and heartening trip. They were at like 10% capacity. Four dogs, only one of which was adoptable (and another four in the lost and found waiting for owner pick up) four cats (which my roommate uniformly said no too, even the Siamese) three rabbits, a single guinea pig who wasn't friendly, and three rats. So it was disappointing since I got no fuzzy friend of my own, but also quite positive since, you know, the more pets are getting adopted the better.

Siamese are rather noisy.  I wouldn't want one, no matter how pretty they are.  Just get me some sweet random moggy, or if I got money, a Bengal.

I like Siamese because they're so chatty. Maine Coons are my other prefered breed, and if I have serious cash I want a Savannah Cat.

We have a Bengal. He's really fucking loud. Like he's possibly the most laid back cat ever, but he knows how to caterwaul and he does it often. If you don't like loud cats, I would not recommend getting a Bengal.

Yeah my boyfriend's cat is half siamese and extremely loud, she likes to yowl whenever she's not getting enough attention, which is mostly when us humans are asleep. Not cool, cat.

Back when Hobbes was exiled to our porch (he has a problem with peeing on things, but he is inside now because it got cold), he would yowl so loudly that my neighbors could hear him while they were sitting in their living room with the TV on.

And yeah, he yowls at night sometimes, too, which is when he gets things thrown at him if he does it in the bedroom.

Growing list of things my dog is scared of:
The sounds of drink cans opening.
Squeaky toys.
My slippers when I'm not wearing them.
Her blanket when unfolded.
The kettle.
Tinsel.

Things she is not scared of when she probably should be:
Running head first into doors to express wanting them opened.
Drills.

My friend Amanda, who hosted the party, has three cats. One was anti-social and generally stayed away from everyone.

These are the other two

I slept there on an air mattress around 4:30AM, I woke up a little before 8 with the cat who's on the bottom there lying next to me and purring. It was a good start to 2015 :)

That video of the girl with the dogs is adorable. I feel like all kids that age need a pack of animals - they'll keep each other entertained and burn off some of that unending energy.

Also any kid that would pick on a girl who has 12 dogs is just asking for it.  :-P

Still better than keeping a large boa or python in one's home, where one needs to have nummy rodents to feed them.

True....though, my problem with that lies in the fact that the nummy rodents are adorable and I wouldn't want to give them up. The bug problem is pure squick.

My aunt told me the most horrible snakes-as-pets related stuff I've heard, which is that you should never ever put up kittens for free on websites like gumtree or craigslist. Not only because the go to irresponsible pet owners, but because they often end up as snake food :-(

You get used to having insects at home. Just make sure you use insects which can't reproduce at room temperature. There are types of crickets which need a higher than room temperature to breed. Same goes for grasshoppers.
At least leopard geckos love mealworms, but they're too fatty to be fed exclusively. And the geckos can't hunt them. That's the good thing about feeding crickets: You just throw a bunch of them into the terrarium, and the geckos will be busy for days.

In addition to leopard geckos (eublepharis macularis) we also have many crested geckos (rhacodactylus ciliatus), two rhacodactylus leachianus, and one very old phelsuma standingi. My mother is in a local organisation for reptiles, and thus has taken up a few geckos which have been brought in by shelters which didn't know how to care for them. The poor phelsuma is one of them. She's already several years above her life expectancy, and lived alone in a small terrarium. Now that she is in a larger terrarium she still doesn't leave an area roughly the size of her old one…

Poor sweetie, that's terrible. Crickets are great, for my toads (I kept fire belly toads (Bombina bombina) as a kid) we'd just run to the pet store about once or twice a week, get bag of hoppers and let the toads amuse themselves.
