I will admit to not having fully perused the entire ouevre because I find every one of his films I've tried to watch frankly embarrassing as cultural artefacts. I have seen bits of most of his films though; I once shared a house with several film students, one of whom was obsessed with like, Anderson and Michel Gondry.

so you saw part of a movie with brown guys in it, which is also a movie about tourists, and are now tossing arguments of "vague racism" at it. i say this only because there is a potential argument to make about it but like i'm not sure it's an entirely intellectually honest argument since it relies on deep misunderstandings of the main characters (viz. that in fact the white people in the film are quite strongly cultural tourists, and that they gloss over the diverse complexity of the nation by doing goofily what their mother does in a serious and equally problematic way, which on a second viewing was one of the most interesting subtexts of the film)

*from which category you should probably exclude bottle rocket, which is decidedly not about a bunch of privileged people's problems, and rushmore, which is in part a film about a dude from the outside of wealthy america's odd little social sphere trying desperately to become a part of it and discovering that in fact acts performed in the worship of social status are somewhat hollow in the face of acts formed from a desire and need to connect empathetically to other human beings

I justify it to myself by saying that the Darjeeling Limited is an exploration of the sort of arrogance and Orientalism that often leads people to travel to India on 'spiritual journeys'. The tourist industry and neo-colonialism are pretty intimately linked. There is idealisation, and perhaps homogenisation, of the culture but I think that gives the viewer a better understanding of how the characters are maybe seeing things. I don't think Indian people are necessarily denigrated by the film.

I guess you could say it is racist because the film is organised around white consciousness. It is a movie about India without any really developed Indian characters. India and its people are sort of reduced to the ground for these privileged grown up children to work out their 'daddy issues'.

I contradicted myself a bit, but I am okay with that.. I was mostly just trying to work it out in my head rather than present an argument.

One of the plot points in The Royal Tenenbaums was Gene Hackman's character being vaguely racist (his ex-wife was marrying a black guy) but I don't recall anything to suggest that Wes Anderson is vaguely racist. But yeah his movies get tedious for other reasons (you mentioned how self-absorbed the characters are.)

Don't the white dudes in the Darjeeling Limited, or at least one of them, 'find themselves' in the arms of a dusky magic brown-person lady? I admit that my memories of a film I saw partly a few years ago may be muddied, but I thought it was a neo-colonialist fantasy then and I have no particular reason to re-watch it because Wes Anderson films are terrible. And I don't like terrible things! I will keep calling Wes Anderson vaguely racist because I have no interest in 'intellectual honesty' and because it mildly annoys people who like Wes Anderson films, who shouldn't like Wes Anderson films because Wes Anderson films are terrible.

Also, his work embodies fascist aesthetics. When you combine that with the fact that he is vaguely racist, he is basically Hitler. The Hitler of making films that are terrible.

Jens and I watched The Darjeeling Limited at Christmas 2009 and I thought it wasn't very good, but I think Jens thought it was. I have no idea what was going on in it so I didn't like it. I have simple tastes in films.

2) I'm pretty sure I leveled the exact same arguments at Khar re: his love of lots and lots and shitloads of stuff that overtly uses fascistic imagery up to and including genuine Neo-Nazis in the "We hate sports" thread and he pulled the same stupid + transparent little bit of logical gymnastics whereby actual fascists are totally acceptable as opposed to things that seem vaguely fascistic in really weak and insignificant ways.
