Well, thanks to GarageBand, I've now joined the millions of sucky bedroom musicians who have successfully recorded themselves. I'm not going to punish your ears with my music (yet), because it's so bad even I can't listen to it. Maybe someday, but probably not for a very long time if ever.

I just felt the need to announce that I've officially joined the ranks of recorded musicians, and apparently they'll let anyone in.

Quit being a tease, you tease, and post your damn recording already. We know you want to. You know you want to. Just do it.

I mean if I were completely satisfied with everything I ever recorded, I would probably be famous by now.

Thanks for the encouragement, but no - you REALLY don't want to hear this. I was just fucking around and figured I'd hit record instead of just jamming to the backing track playback. For one thing, it's extra-horrible because I got the mix wrong - my guitar is way too loud.

Shit, most people don't even want to hear GOOD blues, by talented musicians. And trust me, I'm not getting down on myself or fishing for compliments. I'm just tellin' it like it is. I'll post something sometime, just not this one.

Heh. Just don't let self-consciousness weigh you down for a year like I did when I first started recording stuff. Some of it was actually pretty decent, in hindsight.

dude no fuck being self conscious about music. even when actually composing and im writing down my ideas, the best ideas come from long jams/tangents. granted, usually i send a lot of time picking apart those jams and deciding what is good or not, i get most of my best musical ideas when im just jamming out to some random ass thing. really its how its done! you can know 200 things about music but the best ideas come from just jammin out.

seriously take for example the piano piece i posted earlier in this thread. the opening bars, that simple little idea, came from just jamming out and then developing even more jams on that simple idea. it is all motherfucking about lil jams.

at the end of the day if you are self conscious exchange ideas and bounce them off people. they will tell you which ones are good and which ones are not. it will make you a better musician.

So a bunch of you know that I'm in a black metal band. I spent all day today doing the vocal tracks for our almost finished EP. I figure there are enough of you who appreciate metal that I should be able to get some good reactions.

Have a listen, tell me what you guys think. Feel free to mention it but I'm already aware that there is little to no bass in the mix, that's because it is not recorded yet. Not in full anyway. The drums are sloppy, they were rushed and we're going to redo them. There are a couple of guitar fills that need to be reworked and we might do some more vocal work when we work on the next two tracks. All that said, I'm really proud of my work on these. I present to you The Corinthian, Four is the Presage of Death and Ihn Fur Noh by Isgahaatt.

You want variable-quality music? You've got variable-quality music!

The Bandcamp Page
The Myspace Page

The gauntlet is DOWN.

P.S. We have better material, but it's essentially in cold storage. I'll dig some of it up over the weekend. Do something with it.

P.P.S. I'm actually quite proud of "Happy Happy Happy Happy".

We are trying with our newer material to groove things up, but we do enjoy some slow, quiet and sad stuff as well. What is the general opinion here about the music? I know the quality is disgusting, but we work with what we have.

Funkalicious Slap-sauce... I feel a song name coming on...

Thanks for the feedback guys and girls, it is certainly most appreciated.

As for the following shameless bump, if anyone feels strongly enough about supporting poor indie-esque artists like us, feel free to PM me about album details or if you want to pre-order an album. Evan Dahm is taking a while with the art, which is the only reason why we haven't gone into production and distribution yet.

So... I got bored to day and recorded a (mostly) improv session with myself- I'd love to hear what parts you guys think "work" and should be expanded into something more fleshed out.

Will likely record an EP with my friend in the very, very near future. Not the guy I play Beatles covers with, but another friend of mine.

ETA: I will submit that Bandcamp.com, Soundcloud.com and Box.net all have their own little in-browser mini players (not all of which have their own volume controls, so be prepared for that!). It saves your new audience a step on the way from 'clicking mouse' to 'hearing sounds,' which makes for very immediate promotion of your music online. Some downsides, such as factors relating to bandwidth or storage capacity or maximum file size will apply, but I am far too lazy to Google that shit and make a comparison chart.

Big time lurker here...

I used to post some back like 3 years ago, maybe someone remembers me?  If not, whatever.

If anyone is interested, here is some pretty simple electronic type music that is mostly garage band loops.
http://www.mediafire.com/?0lxqbej3jsq

I know, not the pinnacle of musical creativity, but I'm proud of it.

Like I said, a lot of it is the loops in Garage Band, but some of the drum tracks I made myself and some of the synth I made myself.

Oh hey. Guess who has some original material for this thread.

That's right, Good Feels does. Song's called "A.H" and it is about a girl who is super enticing but not really worth any effort whatsoever. We wrote that in two hours this morning. Recorded this draft in a single take on Kabir's iPhone. He's finishing up the lyrics and we'll be recording a final of it in about two weeks.

Look up the Glyn Johns method of recording drums. All you need is a single overhead and a dedicated kick drum mic. Two overheads and a dedicated kick is even better.

Actually the "Glyn Johns" technique just refers to the placement of yr two (always two) overheads, being placed directly in front and over the floor tom, like so:

and doesn't really imply anything else. You can use Glyn Johns technique with as many, or as few, close mics as you want. It is a pretty cool technique nonetheless, and I use it more often for recording than not.

That being said, the spirit of Patrick's post still rings true, you can get a fantastic drum sound from just two overheads and a kick mic, as long as you're careful with yr placement. I wouldn't use less than two o/h mics though, unless you want a very boring, static sounding recording with no stereo seperation.

So here is Breaking Brick With Glass by Minimal Effect.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmoYql0FKn4

It's definitely one of our weirder songs, but it also features some of the interior album art you will find if you buy the CD. This is personally my lest favourite song off the album, but I'm curious to know what others think. Please let me know, as I would greatly appreciate it.

Dovey, that's definitely fair, although if you can't get full-on stereo separation due to a single o/h and a single kick, you could always just pan vocals a little bit one way and drums a little bit the other way. Doesn't make it perfect, but it helps a lot.

If all you've got is two mics, you'll HAVE to have a dedicated kick. There's just no other option really, if you don't you're gonna have nothing in that department. Just raise your o/h higher and make it hotter.

Guys, can I ask a little advice? I've got this in two parts now..the first bit starts off Am, C, Em/G, and the second bit goes into D, C, Em/G, but I feel like it needs more and I don't know where to go from there?

Side note: It's all capo 5, mostly appregiated, and clean. Also, this is where I needed to pay better attention in theory..what fucking key am I in?

It sounds like you're in Am/Cmaj (or rather Dm/Fmaj given your capo).

The Dmaj chord just augments the 6th tone of the scale (if you're thinking in terms of Am and forgetting you're capoed).  Or, if you're in the major key I mentioned (Cmaj), the "D" chord is a V/V which is a chord that could help you modulate into Gmaj.  Maybe this part you're writing could be a bridge to a chorus in G?

Basically the "D" chord will sound cool (try making it a D7, I've been playing with that lately) if you're in Amin.  And technically with your capo it sounds like you're in Dmin.
