What other alt would there be?.....Alt-Yelling Bird!?!!?

the horror, the horror

A bird that speaks in normal conversational tones without the use of obscenities?  How is that horrifying?

It's the alt-Winslow that has me concerned - not sure why, its just a feeling in the back of my mind.

Alt-Pintsize is a British gentleman with tophat and monocle. He is serving tea every time a visitor drops by, no one ever asks where he gets it from.

I don't think Jeph would go through all the trouble of designing not one but FOUR new characters and spend most of the night on a new background unless these guys will be at least semi-regular. Though it may just be for an arc until Marten gets back on track.

On the whole, I think we'll wait to see what happens.  In any case, we don't have any information to base any such ideas on yet.

Which of the various possibilities for PMC were you referring to?

ParaMilitary Corporation.

What with the whole La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo song going on and all.

It's a Metal Gear Solid thing.

Possible. Marten and Steve don't have too many facial characteristics that are easily picked up on, like Dora and Faye.

Either way, I DO want to meet Hannersatz.

Ha!

Between HannErsatz and PseuDora, I crown you the king of doppelganger names.

All right, here's my take:

Guy 1 (brown hair, plaid shirt, looks like an "X" on his neck): "Mirror" version of Steve.
Guy 2 (light brown hair, white shirt, muscular): non-indie-boy "Mirror" version of Marten.
Gal 1 (long hair, in apron): "Mirror" version of Dora.
Gal 2 (short hair, glasses, flannel shirt): "Mirror" version of Faye.

My thoughts exactly.

Jeph, if you read this, please, please do not make these people one-offs.

I was thinking on my way in to work (dangerous, especially with all the fresh snow...)

Where does Dora get the muffins and brownies?  They're not baked at CoD, there was discussion of putting in a kitchen once, but it went nowhere...

The Secret Bakery is the perfect supplier - when people ask, "Where do you get your delicious [insert baked good]?" you can say,

"It's a Secret..."

At least that's where we get the pastries and muffins for the continental breakfast at the motel I work at.

whats the last two's origin anyway?  they kinda lack any african features, their more indian looking like morgue girl...whatever her name was again

Meena.

As for the new characters, the taller on could  easily be African-American, with straightened hair (very common in these parts).

The other one looks more southeast-asian to me, Indian, Pakistani, that neighborhood?  I can even hear her with an accent... but she probably doesn't have one, unless she puts one on to seem exotic.   :-P

It's a container used as a "Butt Can" (for cigarette butts).  For when you don't want a huge pile of of the damn things outside your door on the ground cause smokers are too damned lazy to ensure that their filthy habit is properly extinguished and that the litter is disposed of before putting it in with regular litter.

I.  Love.  It.     (The comic, duh.)  The bakery background, the character designs (alternate CoD indeed, at least on the surface).  I'm still puzzling over the bakery name and the fact that they sell "Discreet Baked Goods & Coffee" -- discreet?  It kinda implies that they'll give you a brown bag to hide the fact that you just bought a dozen penis-shaped croissants or something -- they wouldn't keep baked goods like that in the case, though.  That would not be discreet.  Wonder if they make their customers sign a non-disclosure agreement so they can stay a "Secret Bakery."  Can't wait to see more bakery hijinks !

I am looking forward to seeing alternate-universe AnthroPCs.

YES.  It might be awhile before we get to see those, unless these folks are more in the habit of carrying them around (ala Marigold that one time).  Hell, the alt-AnthoPCs might even recognize Marten from what Pintsize has posted on teh nets -- there was a dancing to daft punk one, if I recall correctly.

They could be doppelgangers (has anyone ever noticed what an awesome word that is?), or it might be Jeph making a statement on how everyone goes through the problems the main cast is going through right now. Maybe it's just intended to make Marten feel better about himself. Or drive him insane.

Both!  Also, both.   :-D

Black Tai? Can't be, she's not wearing a tux... :-D  (Edit: Dang! Somebody beat me to it.)

I'm not even going to guess. The shorter dark-complexioned girl (Faytima? Fayndira?) appears to have a nose-ring, but that is hardly decisive nowadays. She certainly seems remarkably relaxed about a fire in the "engine-room" of a bakery. I'm guessing that the "giant blender thing" is a spiral kneading machine, assuming they bake on the premises.

I am in awe of the brilliant bakery background. Greater love hath no man than this; that he incurs RSI for his audience... :-o

Guys, these are new characters.  Matching them up with the old ones (who are presumably still around) is completely pointless!  OK, I agree it'll be easier to refer to them when they have names for us to use...

You think a flying cat is feasible in the QC universe?

Hmm.

And for the record, there's already been a flying cat in the QC-verse.

I was going to say that a flying cat is pretty feasible considering we've had breeding Roombas.  :-)

...Marten's line from the 4th panel of that one always gets me. Classic.

I'd like to point out how very hipster the concept of a secret street and a secret bakery are.  Possible return to the indie humor the comic hasn't had much of lately?

Or maybe this street and this bakery are usually only found by people seeking a new beginning.  The street is mostly unnoticeable, and perhaps the only people that could find it are those looking for somewhere new.  Most people stick to the same old coffee shops, restaurants, etc., and rarely look very hard past the first "adequate" one they find nearby them.

Is there a bakery near CoD?

There IS a bakery in downtown NoHo, about where the various signs and such that we see in the comic would suggest the fictional COD is located. "La Fiorentina Pastry Shop", located on the corner of Pleasant and Armory.

Oh come on, I gave you reference names this morning!  Although I forgot the Faerie girl, who's clearly the bizarro Hannelore...

As for names, it's pointless to guess at them - Jeph will either name them or not, depending on their utility to the plot.  I'm hoping none of them are throwaways - there's just too much potential there!

SPOILER ALERT: Alt-Hanners IS Hanners, but she doesn't know it!

Also, a Farinograph seems fairly esoteric, baking-equipment-wise.  (I know, too little too late.)

Totally blind, but I must have missed the trigger for this reference...

Same here - it's not in the twitter feed, either.

Yes it was (just need to scroll down):

"Quick, twitter, I need the name of a really weird/esoteric piece of baking equipment, preferably machinery
about 23 hours ago via Twitter for Mac"

On Twitter in response, Argylegasm was more timely in suggesting a fondant press (perhaps he watches Ace of Cakes?).  Though a spiral kneading machine sounds good too.  Not sure how any of these things would catch on fire, though.

Out of curiosity, why do some of you seem to think that alternate = opposite?

Awesome tinduck!

Or is it a heavy metal duck?

maybe Samurai Duck? (sounds like a dinner at a faux asian restaurant)

But... I did... must've missed it!

The spiral kneading machine definitely would - big, heavy duty electric motor (some of 'em run on 220 current), and an older under-maintained one with cracking insulation on the wires is ripe for overheating.  Give it a little splash of oil or butter by accident, and voila!  Instant disaster!

To be honest, the only fondant presses I've ever seen or heard of are manual, and that's really  hard to catch on fire!

Besides, the spiral kneaders really do  look like giant mixers/blenders!

Ah, ok, I don't usually pay much attention to twitter.

I would guess that many of them are too used to "alternate endings" which usually tend to be fairly different from the "regular" endings.  Total guess, though, as I've not been participating much in that portion of the conversation.

Nope, can't be Samurai.  The armor is definitely European plate, probably Maximillian Gothic from the look.

Possible. Marten and Steve don't have too many facial characteristics that are easily picked up on, like Dora and Faye.

Either way, I DO want to meet Hannersatz.

Ha!

I think it's more the evil twin trope, combined with the fact that most alternate universes are bizarro

(that should keep you busy fo a few... )

My favorite example was always the original Star Trek where alt-Spock had a van dyke...

I hope at least they're semi regular because I will say I absolutely have a thing for burly / big guys *cough* and you don't see enough of them in comics that are young and drawn cute (well guy was cute to me lol)... Especially if he's something of a big ol' sensitive teddy bear, he may become my favorite character |D;

But I love these character designs, esp the women.

OCD ... CoD ... there's something to play with, there, but once again life and work intrude.

So are they supposed to be Black? The shade seems a bit off...

Honestly, they look like white girls dipped in chocolate.

I'd like to dip them in chocolate.

The new girls are hot.

That's all I have to say right now.

Actually I wouldn't like to dip them in chocolate; I'm not into food-play during sex. I just can't stop thinking about how icky and unsanitary it is. Plus you'd be sticky afterwards >.<

Wait, the last panel, I thought Hanners kinda got a general idea of what her clone would be like?

Also, didn't I see one of the characters in a previous strip?
