WCDT 21-25 March 2011 (1886-1890)
« on: 20 Mar 2011, 05:32 »

And to start off, we have the poll that SHOULD have been posted on Friday.

This might be a bit of a hectic week for me (I have at least one call-back at a place about 70-80 miles from me), so the poll might not be updated every night.

And side note: anyone wanna bet we get Yelling Bird on Monday?

Judging by Jeph's latest Twitter posts, that is a strong possibility.

And it's nice having you back in the driver's seat.

jwhouk generally changed the poll like every day to reflect the forum's constantly changing blabberstream of vaguely-related-to-the-comic horseshit, but it's cool. You're cool. I liked your driving fine.

Also I would like to motion for an end to the waffles thing. How did that even become a thing? These are terrible waffles, they are stale, get them off my plate, I ordered fucking eggs and steak anyway how hard is that to cook

But seriously, can we cut it out with the waffles.

To those who think that sounds like a joke, be aware that there was a period a couple of years ago when the ability to make polls was removed in the WCD forum (which was separate from discussion at that time) because it was felt that they had got out of hand.  It was restored at or shortly after the time when the WCD and QC discussion forums were merged.

Depends - Whiskey, such as Irish Whiskey, and I will use this for the sake of the example, is tripled distilled, and can made from a single malt, single grain, blended or a pure pot still. It has a smooth taste, which has a slight spicy hint to it.

Whisky, such as Scotch Whisky has a smokey flavour to it, due to the method in which it is distilled, offering a unique taste.

The main difference is actually in the distilling methods used. I could go deeper into an proper explanation, but I'm in work at 6am for a training day....Cue muttering and grumbling as I travel tomorrow. (Oh, and btw, I worked in a major distillery for about two years...and before anyone asks, yes, I did get free stock.)

Well. That's your right...

Talisker is my malt of choice. Some other smoky/peaty distilled goodness also works. I won't say 'no' to Jameson either. But that's partly because I have so many friends in Ireland that I only rarely need to pay for mine. And the triple distillation is not a bad idea.

My bridge team just advanced to the next round in our knock-out tourney by the narrowest possible margin, so I will celebrate with some...

Butting into something I hardly know anything about, the talk of whiskey drew me in. I had a horrible experience with it, then again, I was 16 and it was Early Times. The smell to this day (I'm 22) of any whiskey makes me ill, the thought of it makes me ill. I was not aware whiskey had smokey flavors along with fruity. I feel like I have to go out and try these names you guys are throwing around now.

I'm more of a shots of Jäger with some Dr. Pepper on the side kind of gal.

I've heard of this, but my local store doesn't have it in stock.  However, a little effort shows another store that does have it.  I am planning to try it, definitely.

Doc, if the smell of whisky makes you nauseous, can i recommend starting out with an Irish coffee? I've had several friends in your situation and that is the best method to allow them to realise "hey not all whisky tastes like spirit cleaner"(mostly due to necking a bottle aged 15 or so... Tesco basic whisky is a dangerous thing.

I was not aware whiskey had smokey flavors

The smokiest (the smokey flavour comes from peat used in the manufacturing) are those from Islay, several of which have already been mentioned.

Okay, so no waffles, but more whiskey? ;)

I keed, I keed. I just changed the polls along with whatever claptrap was being thrown out here about the comic. And, usually, I had the last poll of the week be the "moment of the week" from the previous five strips.

I also believe that the Waffles reference is from that Most Serious Comic Of All, 510.

And I agree- Irish coffee is a lovely way to start- caffine and alcohol all in one, and it tastes MILES better than those battery acid flavored energy drinks.

Jameson's.

I have an Irish coffee mug, a present from my Daughter, with the following recipe printed on the side:

____________________________________ {Top of mug}

_____  Whipped cream (if you must)

_____  Coffee to here (optional)

         What the hell, you're
_____  Irish AND it's cold outside
         Fill it up to here.

          If you're Irish,
_____  Fill to here with
          Irish whiskey.

          If it's cold outside,
_____  fill to here with
          Irish whiskey.

_____  Fill to here
         with Irish whiskey.

____________________________________  {Bottom of mug}

The recipe is actually pretty good, whether or not you're Irish, and whether or not it's cold outside.

Yes, this was when I was trying to master the polling feature & having a hard time of it, & apparently the mods thought putting up with my repeated failed poll threads was too much trouble. At least that's how it looked from my corner. So, yeah, don't worry about it, it's all fine.

I find it nice how Faye holds her lips like that when she was suggesting a possibility. Of course Faye meant for him to play with her boobs or alike, and he's using the same seafood references that disgusted them before to get some real sex. I'm sure in real QC time not much time has passed since they hooked up. So it may be to early for that.

Donations for Angus to buy a snorkel? He will need one. Here's my quarter.

Srsly. Either he's reading it perfectly, and realizes that it is still too soon for them to have sex, or he is just sooo nervous, and is on autopilot attempting to add levity whenever tension (and something else) rises. Whatever it is, I'm not sure that his is optimal approach. Mind you, it will probably work reasonably well in the end.

I love me the Irish whiskey and bourbon, especially the really good Kentucky bourbon and the really old Irish (While in Ireland, there was a 25-year-old Redbreast I had that gave delicious truth to the "water of life" meaning!) but curiously have never liked Scotch! I'm not sure why.

And heh, I don't mind the waffles so much, but 's just like, maybe we should put the joke on the shelf for a little.

As for the comic, your snark does not serve you so well, young MacPhee, not this day. I mean, we've all had the urge to keep the joke going, son, but you gotta learn when to shut up. :P Faye may respect you for sticking to your guns, though; perhaps the dere-dere has not left tsun-tsun and punching in its wake yet.

Dude's really lucky that Faye's into him.

You just know he's a virgin when he's dropping lines like that.
If he isn't, he deserves to be.

Am I the only person on whom that line would work?

I even think Faye's reaction was a tiresome cliche.

The line itself wouldn't work for me. But I guess I would laugh hard, and since I like my sex funny and I'm always happy when I have something to laugh about, the whole situation would probably work for me, yes x)
I just don't know whether Angus was absolutely serious about that...comparison. That's not as funny, then.

First response on starting to read the comic was "Panel three looks very cute."

The reponse to the next panel was, "What an idiot!"

Panel 3 was cute, yes.  But my first thought in panel 4 was that he was pretty presumptuous about the activity she had in mind.  The body language says that it may   have been what he was thinking, but Faye's pulled that switch before, and may have actually suggested something else, given the chance.

So Angus not only ruined it if it was what he  was thinking, he ruined whatever she  had in mind, as well!

Smooth, he ain't.

Wow Angus, I mean...wow.  I might be a nerd/dork/geek, but even I'm not that much of a nerd/dork/geek.  You just know he's a virgin when he's dropping lines like that.

Come on, it wasn't that bad. I'd probably make a bad joke like that (a virgin I ain't, though you may not believe me since I've just indicated that I'd make a joke like that). And, it might even work. Stupid jokes are often great methods for flirting and, IMO, there is no reason that you can't have some humour in the bedroom. As long as you're laughing with each other and not at each other, it's all good and fun.

Having said that, it was probably not the best joke to make given that they haven't actually slept together yet. That's something you save for a little bit later in the relationship when you're more comfortable with one another.

Favorite whisky of all time ... Ardberg Uigeadail. you can almost chew the smokiness (you almost have to).
That is a damn fine whisky. The Arbdeg Supernova is even better. It's similar to the Uigeadail, but bigger and peatier.
