What is happening in the last panel?

Why is Faye twisting Padma's arm?

And why is Padma holding a wooden spoon?

Does Jeph realize he's virtually guaranteed a relentless wave of Jim/Dora shippers?
(Not that it would happen, Dora's not ready for that kind of thing, she didn't seem very impresses with Jim's line (if that's what it was,) and I'd miss Tai when she was sent to prison for the brutal murder of Jim and/or Dora.)

I am confuse! :psyduck:

I got the impression that he misinterpreted her reply as a confirmation. Whereas I read her reply as meaning that she was pleased that she came across as young as that.

I believe you mean the Indonesian fighting spoon.

Forgive my ignorance and my being too tired to just google it, but is a silver fox like a male version of a cougar? An aging dude who especially likes younger women? I don't think I've heard that term before.

I do believe it's similar to that. Although, I think it can also be used just to describe an attractive older man.

Don't you just love how men get a fairly nice/sophisticated sounding label like silver fox and women get stuck with cougar.

I personally just know the term from a movie called Grandma's Boy. One of grandma's friends seduced the main character's friend and his nickname for her was 'Silver Fox' which instantly relates to cougardom for me.

Padmas complete inability to detect any subtility is getting kind of annoying now. I mean, she's worse at that than I am.

So "Silver Fox" stands for woman who likes younger men ?

To paraphrase Roger Rabbit, I'm sure she doesn't normally miss subtleties - only when it's funny (ok it wasn't incredibly funny, but that's not the point).

What's so terrible about cougars?

They're cruel beasts that weigh over a hundred pounds and have behaviors almost exactly like feral housecats.

But I've also heard the word used as a synonym for mountain lion.

I would remind you that we have been through the issue of shipping at length, and your example is clearly proscribed here.  Even if it is meant as a joke, I would say that the behaviour of this forum is not yet so secure that such jokes can be allowed to pass.

There is no call to belittle the concept of friendship by trying to turn every relationship into a romantic one.  It is simply unnecessary and not true to life (real or comic) either - thus inappropriate.  And Faye is already in a romantic relationship.

What I find intriguing is that neither Jim nor Dora thinks it remarkable there is an altercation/martial arts demonstration/what have you between their respective employees/friends as they speak.

True, but in that instance, (which wasn't the first time Faye and Penelope came to blows) there was an actual disagreement which led to the exchange. Here, Faye seems to be manhandling Padma at random, and what's more, Padma is commenting on the verbal exchange between Jim and Dora and not even reacting to Faye trying to re-engineer her upper extremity.

Silver fox is indeed similar to a male cougar but not exactly the same. Silver foxes (at least with my experience) normally don't pursue younger women, they are simply so elegant and awesome younger women/men flock to them.  Also the whiter the hair, the Foxier they get.

Real life examples both gay and straight include: Cary Grant, George Clooney, Anderson Cooper, Tim Gunn (even though he's celebate everyone wants to be with him), Anthony Bourdain, Eric Ripert, Steve Martin, and Jon Stewart is On the brink.

As a Lover of Dora/Marten I'm uncomfortable, but as a lady who goes weak in the knees with gray in the hair, I can't say I want it to fail.

No, that would be a cougar. A silver fox is a middle aged man who likes younger women.

Silver fox! That sounds a lot better than most of the alternatives I've heard. If I started chasing college girls after they have passed my courses, somehow I don't think that 'Silver fox' would be the term used to describe that?

Also, some posters seem to think that cougar is a derogatory term. My exposure is apparently again very different from theirs, but I haven't heard it being used (nor have I used it myself) in that way. To me it refers to an objectively attractive lady, who knows what she wants, and more often than not can get it. True, a cougar is about half a generation older than the prey of her choice, but she carries her few extra years with dignity, and won't let such a chronological triviality deter her from her pursuits. In some cases it shows poor taste/judgement on her part, but let's not be ageists :-)

But Jim has (to reiterate) a well-defined "soul patch", stubble on the sides and chin, and a smooth top lip/neck - it's clearly by design rather than by neglect.
That may well be the case, but stubble in that part of my face is often the result of trying to shave too quickly and with as few strokes as possible. When carefully avoiding cutting the lower lip, and/or passing the chin, the blade may momentarily lose contact with the skin (or make contact with a lower pressure), and this is what the result looks like - unless time is taken to check out the result. Read: 'neglect'.

hodges you are ruining my mental fanfiction with your moderation

In all seriousness, though, I don't think they're more than friends at all, nah, I just like how they interact and find the aesthetic of them together not wholly displeasing, but that's as far as I'll take it or say anything about it

I also must respectfully disagree that they had any dialogue at all--they probably just started sparring whilst Dora and Jim were concluding negotiations/flirting

Mental fanfic is OK, it's just when we mention it in the forum that Mr. Hodges brings the hammer.

Speaking of our prof, is there a way to get the proper sound effects or flashing light for the last part of his sig?

Just so.  The trouble is that once mentioned, it never simply stops there - this is a discussion  forum, after all.

:-D 'fraid not (an admin probably could, I suppose) (edit - oh, look!).  BTW, that quote is from a thread in another part of the forums in which my moderation caused some fairly heated controversy.

I actually want to see how much crazy this guy has.
Having the hitler-stache on his bottom lip seems like foreshadowing, to me.

When you're old enough to shave, then you can judge and make bad jokes.
Most guys do tend to develop a soul patch if they don't shave for a couple of days, simply because it is one of the most visible areas on a man's face.

I've been shaving for eighteen years, thanks.

Most guys that go without shaving for a couple days definitely don't develop a soul patch, though (I don't, nobody I know does at work or in my family and we've all seen each other in pretty advanced levels of disarray over the years). That particular look requires daily maintenance (which explains the fuzziness you see surrounding it on Jim's face, he hasn't shaved in about a day so the rest of his face has that "shadowed" look).

So "Silver Fox" stands for woman who likes younger men ?

No, that would be a cougar. A silver fox is a middle aged man who likes younger women.

Silver fox! That sounds a lot better than most of the alternatives I've heard. If I started chasing college girls after they have passed my courses, somehow I don't think that 'Silver fox' would be the term used to describe that?

Also, some posters seem to think that cougar is a derogatory term.

The only people that think of cougar as a derogatory term are women-that-aren't-cougars and dudes-that-never-attract-them. It gets a bit more complicated than that with older men going after younger women, though, due to the power dynamics usually at play in our society (and is a bit of a negative commentary on our society in general if a dude up to twenty years younger than a given woman can be seen as her equal while the reverse is viewed as impossible).

I also must respectfully disagree that they had any dialogue at all--they probably just started sparring whilst Dora and Jim were concluding negotiations/flirting

I'd agree with this. I can picture Padma and Faye waiting for Jim and Dora to get through their business discussion and just became bored. What better way to kill time than sparring?

Exactly!

If I may be allowed a tangent, I think that shipping is generally a healthy, perfectly okay thing to do so long as one doesn't break some cardinal rules, like:

-don't show the creator your porn/ideally, don't make porn
-don't get into a war over how awesome your favorite pairing is
-don't disrespect the creator or his canonical relationships
-don't get really creepy/serious about it

Hooowwwever I also realize these rules are pretty much impossible to follow, and newcomers will break them (hell I broke all of them in my first weeks), so the shipping ban must stand for the good of the community :/ I wish it were otherwise, though

But Jim has (to reiterate) a well-defined "soul patch", stubble on the sides and chin, and a smooth top lip/neck - it's clearly by design rather than by neglect.

If I don't shave for three days, I end up with quite a lot of stubble and a very strong soul patch, for some people it just happens naturally. It takes nearly a week for me to get as much stubble on my upper lip.

1) I think Jeph is deliberately messing with us fans to 'suggest' a shipping and then pull the rug out. He has said he is mean to his characters, why not us too?

2) Padma has always been differently clued about relationships. Renee even commented it early on:  http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1867
And further evidence: http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1865

3) Faye and Padma will constantly be testing each other. Those two are behaving like sisters (sibling rivalry) more than anything else.

I am personally hoping for this arc to lead up to a Zalgo appearance on Friday to prepare people for absolutely nothing happening on the 21st.

I agree entirely. He might even allow it to go further than it already has, but he won't pull the trigger on it. How do I deduce this? By the simple fact that there has never been a pairing in this strip which I approve of.

We'll know ol' Jephy is doing a bit of a ship tease if Hannelore just happens to be having a cup of coffee when Mannelore pops by with the cupcakes.

Also this deal is going to work out badly for Dora because Faye will eat all the cupcakes leaving none for the customers. Will Angus still love Faye when she has a bigger muffin-top? Will she still make his dough rise? Tune in next week to find out.

Am I the only one who didn't see that as a pick up line or a come on? I'm Dora's age, I feel like Jim does, and I'm not that far removed from those kids, age-wise.

Sorry if I am redundant: Penelope's throwing ladle + Faye's judo-hold

True, but in that instance, (which wasn't the first time Faye and Penelope came to blows) there was an actual disagreement which led to the exchange. Here, Faye seems to be manhandling Padma at random, and what's more, Padma is commenting on the verbal exchange between Jim and Dora and not even reacting to Faye trying to re-engineer her upper extremity.

we--ell, talking about coming to blows, Padma and Faye "made acquaintances" sparring in the street...
what I think happened "behind the scene" is something like this:

P: wow, that's a nice throwing ladle..
F: gimme that!!
P: no way!
>TONK!<
F: ok lady, it's schooling time!

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Faye was related to the Thing. Not because of size or anything, just her economic and direct use of clobbering to fix things.

Still rooting for Padma in these skirmishes, though. Go Padma!

Very unlikely IMO; I can't seeing him deliberately encouraging the forum to do things that he specifically hates.  It's merely the way the story has gone at this point in his mind - or the characters' minds, as Jeph is one of those writers who finds that sometimes the characters dictate the story in ways he finds unexpected, even to himself (this is even suggested by his comment).

I dunno, almost feels like a false flag to me. Like he's engineering an excuse to finally indiscriminately swing around the ban-hammer like it's Mjolnir. Nuke half the board and leave everybody else too scared to say anything about the comic ever again.

Note: The preceding post is completely facetious in nature. This poster is not attempting to suggest anything of any nature and has no definitive opinion on the purpose of the possibly flirtatious behavior of any of the characters of late.

Someone mentioned that Padma is responding to Jim & Dora's conversation, rahter than Faye redesigning her arm, but really she's responding to Faye's observation about Jim.  "Foxes?..."  And it looks to me like Faye's just convincing Padma to DROP THE LADLE, LADY, AND NOBODY GETS HURT.

And I think Faye's being a wee bit sarcastic.  Jim's no silver fox - the term is used for someone with a certain amount of suavity (?), and he basically guessed her age correctly by telling Dora that she doesn't  look as young as the other "kids".  I think most of us can agree, that's sorta the opposite of suave.  His last line really didn't help, either.  Clearly his idea of a "real woman" is more his age... probably not what Dora wants to hear!

On a different note, the art in the last panel is just amazing - I keep looking at the facial expressions, the body placement, the tilt of the heads, the details of postioning indicated in the clothes...

Man, he's gotten good.  Like, lightyears beyond just a year or so ago.

To be fair, everyone in QC-land is as about as subtle as a brick thrown through a window.

So, there is a mutual agreement formed. Huzzah! Faye and Padma's rivalry continues unimpeded. YES!

All is right with the QC universe. For now.
