At this point, my prediction is that the customers will taste CoD's inferior coffee, hate it and then turn up at the Secret Bakery and prefer theirs..... I can see a trade war....

Also, funny comic. Also answers some of the coffee nerd's points.

I'm glad Jeph's a coffee nerd too.  :-D

Probably the best thing they can do then is close up shop for the day. They'll lose money of course, but would Dora rather that or risk permanently losing customers because of degassing coffee grounds?

another curve in the continuing downward Dora spiral, while Faye's well off the ground and starting to soar

Ironically, Faye may turn out have been the better person to negotiate the contract, at least from a take-no-prisoners standpoint

I hope Jeph introduces us to Dora's therapist some day

Isn't Dora's therapist the same one Faye uses?  (The number Faye gives Dora after the Marten breakup?)

True - but she's concerned with the beans themselves at this point, and the transport and processing would presumably apply similarly to any alternative.

yeah... think about how much carbon dioxide a person as big as Elliott must belch out as he pushes carts of cupcakes to COD and off-gassing beans back to TSB

but when you think holistically about the problem: what about Hanners and the rest of the staff as their brains take in orders, process them, and then either give directions to their arms and legs to serve the coffee or in the case of Faye, dynamically assess the intelligence and emotional state of the customer to devise an insult properly calibrated to tear down the customer in the most efficient way possible. or take out the trash. or clean the bathroom.

that's a lot of brain power. and a lot of CO2

Isn't Dora's therapist the same one Faye uses?  (The number Faye gives Dora after the Marten breakup?)
I believe Faye got Dora a referral and Dora's is a guy

Nope. At one stage Faye said that Dr. Corinne wouldn't accept any of her or Hanners' social circle anymore (Which makes sense because anymore of the group in therapy with her would cause Dr. Corinne to lose scope about her patients). The number Faye gave Dora was a referral given by the good doctor for another therapist.

Hanners has got it wrong, for a change.  The beans are not contributing to global warming, as they are a renewable resource and the next batch is taking back the CO2 from the air as it grows.
The fact still remains, Dora broke Hanners. And that's what matters in the QCverse.

Seriously, how the hell are Dora and Faye going to rebuild Hanners after this?

I'm the sort to wonder about this, but ....
Marten and Faye live at least on the second floor and Hanners lives one flight up from them. Unless the trash service in QCNoHo uses helicopters and there's some ordinance against dumpsters at street level or incinerators in the basement ... Who takes their trash upstairs?

Looks like they're gonna have to press Hanners Reset Button again

Frankly, at this stage, I think Dora should call a 'Health Day', close up and go back and Roast a double batch.

The last thing she needs is a repeat of Monday.

Quote from: J. Jacques
Cue 100 angry coffee roasters decrying Dora's storage methods

I'm happy to be the first to point this out. Fuck the storage method, here is a bigger issue: after roasting, coffee beans are really acidic for several hours. Even after that, they’re still releasing carbon dioxide from the roasting process and will taste weird if they’re brewed. For best results, they need to rest for preferably two to three days. Surely if Dora's coffee is so great she would know this.

/nerdrage

Oh hey look somebody knows their coffee. Oh hey it's me. :D

I'm no chemist; would putting the beans in a room with an ozone generator get them to finish off-gassing sooner

Closing and telling people their beans are over at tSB could actually be a good business move in the long run.

Or they could post a sign "Today's special: Bad coffee only, free, limit one cup per customer"

Probably not, the ozone isn't going to react with the gas until it's out of the bean, at which point it will have finished outgassing.

Raven seems much less ditzy!  I mean obviously she's not had much chance to be a moron, but she's explained CO2 emissions in a way that satisfied and calmed down Hannelore.  Looks like all that higher education has had an effect!  Also, maybe it's just changing art styles, but she seems to be... thinner?  Am I the only one who thinks that?

Yay, the Return of Raven!

It could be that Jeph is prepping for a large and familiar crowd at this party? Oh, speaking of which, has there ever been an instance where Raven and Tai interacted? They seem like they would be an interesting mix together. (The ship has not left dry dock. Repeat, ship has NOT left dry dock...)

Well, even in the earlier strips she has moments where she seemed to just be faking it a little. Also, there are a lot of people that can be really book smart, but just amazingly dumb at the same time.

Also: YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

I don't think so (though I stopped studying Chemistry after high-school). I doubt if the out-gassing CO2 needs to be oxidized (or even could be, since CO2 is already fully oxidized), and ozone is quite destructive of organic materials so it would probably not be good for the coffee (or the paint on the walls for that matter; ozone is actually quite nasty stuff). Possibly storing the beans under reduced pressure would do the trick, but installing a vacuum chamber couldn't possibly be cost-effective compared with Dora getting herself organized.

So Raven's back, and out of college for the long vacation. I guess summer has officially arrived in QCerica.

For comic #1939...

1. I will also join in with the "Yay for the return of Raven" crowd.  (Re-)Add another name to the CoD cute single girl waiting list  .

2. As for CO2 and plant-life, the problem is not the cycle itself, the problem is there are woefully fewer (and fewer) plants to balance out the greater (and greater) CO2 emissions .

3. Science Fairies, descending from the skies in "tastefully" back-slit lab coats (for their wings) bringing scientists conceptual theorems with a wave with their fiber-optic wands.  And smiting scientologists with their maser beam emitters powered by baelfire.

4. And who says Arbor Day Giraffes do not exist...?

Hmm I am now finding myself with Dora, wondering about the idea of the Arbor Day Giraffe. Both in where it started and if interesting licensing opportunities could be had.

I squee'd so damn hard when I saw Raven.

I never squee.

Here's hoping "summer" lasts at least a year or two.  :-)

My thoughts exactly. What a utterly delightful suprise.        Yay, the ever-positive Ms. Pritchard is back. Oh YESSSS!!!
*stupid brain, stop making me grinning like an idiot*

Uhm..  Arbor Day Giraffe?? Wasn't Hanners kinda freaked out about giraffes? I recall somekind of incident in zoo involving 'em.

Picked up Herpes at some point, as well, if that's a cold sore.

I think that's her Monroe piercing. Although the nose piercings seems to be new.

Of course: YAY RAVEN! Although with all the new people, will Dora be able to hire her? If not hopefully she'll still hang around for a while at least.

I'd reached halfway through panel two before I was all "wait, what?" and realised it was Raven. That was unexpected, to say the least.

I'm not sure if CoD would have any job positions left, considering that Hannelore and Cosette have been hired since Raven left. The deal with TSB won't create any more jobs, since Dora keeps her roasting process a secret and the baked goods are delivered by Elliot rather than needing collection. I think Raven may end up disappointed...

I always thought it was an actual mole, but it first appears here, and wasn't there before, so yeah, a piercing.  But it was always there when she worked at CoD.

However, all three of those early ones appear to show a small nose stud, which later ones don't; however, as it's old ones that have inspired Jeph to bring her back, maybe he just continued it from them rather than adding it as a new feature.

That stuff could give you cancer if you hold it back...

Hopefully she will get her job back for a while, would be lovely to see her again. I love how she looks now!

Totally agree with this! So happy to see Raven. It would be awesome to have her back for a bit. I wonder if COD staff have summer holidays organised as that may leave a temp opening to cover annual leave.
