Is that Miley Cyrus with the finally Miley blow up doll?

Sidenote: the finally miley blow up doll took the cake for creepiest sex toy between some friends and I.
Reasoning: There are creepy dudes out there who are a serious market for that and it isn't just some gag gift.

Apparently it is called a "release aid". Katniss did not use one.

Back in my day, we didn't have fancy release aids...we had finger tabs, big ol' crappy plastic finger protector thingies, and if you used one, everyone called you a pussy (they made it a hell of a lot harder to properly aim, too)...At least our arm guards were practical.

...Then again, I always used a recurve bow...I can't remember what kind Katniss had.

No, it's called "aiming".  Straight bows like that (what are they called?) are a special challenge, like medieval european longbows.  I shot recurves myself, but for shooting a compound bow like the one tooth-girl's using (which is easy to draw, but hard to hold since they develop ~100 - 150 lbs of force) a child would probably need some kind of trigger device.

I'm guessing by her stance that she couldn't walk in them at all. I'm sure she needed someone to help her change poses.

I don't think she could. Even in pointe shoes, dancers have a lot of padding and support in the toe. That is basically just a cone that she put her foot into.

Personally, I find the concept awesome. I think it's impressive that someone involved in an industry so closely linked to the world of fashion would make such a bold statement. I can appreciate the thought that they put into the concept and design as well. It's really interesting to look at the way the model walks in them too- an almost too straight posture is common with runway models (editorials are a different story...and sometimes pretty odd*) but these shoes make her hunch over and drag herself....pulling her down. It is incredibly smart design that really enhances the work conceptually.

tl;dr- practical? no. but a really thought provoking commentary on our society's standard of beauty.

I think it helps to induce stressing of the leg muscles to compensate...seems like a bizarre exercise regimen to me.

I am creeped out by pics of extreme women's footwear, because... Footbinding!. It took the iron fist of communism finally to put an end to this horrible custom, for which I am profoundly grateful.

According to wiki, the term for a bow made of a simple piece of wood, as opposed to being laminated with other materials, is a "self bow"

Yes, it is. You read upwards from the names you can see at the bottom of the chart. The red lines show the progress of the winners in what is obviously a knock-out competition.

Thanks for that Akima, I wasted thoroughly enjoyed over an hour of youtube footage of Japanese archery, kendo and other forms of sword use. I am now both delighted and a little disturbed small children taught to use a blade that could cut clean through my leg.

I'm not really sure why flipping the Rook was supposed to be confusing. An upside-down Rook is usually taken to be a Queen, although it's often a Rook that has already been captured.
