Mail that I got this morning from our computer services dept; nice to know that the organisation I work for exists after all:

Quote
This is just to let you know that if you are using the Janet certificate signing service via IT Services then we will be using domain validated (DV) certificates from now on rather than organisation validated (OV) certificates because the latter require a cumbersome callback process that often fails because Comodo folk don’t understand the complexity of our organisation[1].

[...]

[1] Last week I first had Comodo tell me that they couldn’t verify that Oxford University exists and then that our head office was definitely on Iffley Road…

(Iffley Road is actually the location of the university's running track, where the first four-minute mile was run.)

It's less of a handshake and more of a dick-waving contest.

1990 wasn't all that long ago, you know.

Mind you, now I'm remembering that in my teens (say, 1960) I was still reading a medical encyclopaedia from 1930; think about it - no antibiotics; TB treated by being dumped in a sanatorium up a mountain.  OK, maybe 1990 is a long time ago, really.

The links to those library books are a problem since it's a blog, and the links seem to point at pages other than the one the linker intended as new pages are added. I got a prostate-gland textbook. It's ironic considering the blog is run by a librarian...

But yes, 1990 is not that long ago. There were actually cars, and TV, and micro-computers! The first  web-site went on-line in 1991 and in 1992 you could even surf the internet with Mosaic! In 1990 I was a little girl in Shanghai, entirely oblivious to all of this, but it can't be that long ago because I remember it, and I'm not old!

(Iffley Road is actually the location of the university's running track, where the first four-minute mile was run.)

Wish I could top that. But not quite. I live 8 miles away from the track where Bannisters world record was broken 7 weeks later by John Landy of Australia.

Not bad, though.  But I'm not merely in the same city as the Iffley Road track; our vet overlooks it, and I sometimes walk the dogs past it too.

And I'm nabbing one of those posts back.

I was half-tempted to point it out myself.

(whenever I post something here and find I've no picture to add, I go to my reaction folder and grab one at random)

Before the internet, when you could only see those things on posters, no one could look at one and think, "Oh, it's just an animated gif." The future is ruining everything.

also good is www.hasthelargehadroncolliderdestroyedtheworldyet.com

If you check the source on that one, it actually takes into account whether or not the world has ended. Theoretically, anyway.

Also in the source code is a cute little bunny that you should never look directly in the eyes.
