That's my plan for the day after Valentine's day. The local shop brands everything with pink and hearts, so I'm planning for lots of discounts.

Ditto :-)

Nick and I will be eating Chinese food and drinking fancy bubbly on actual Valentine's Day but the good stuff happens the following weekend. Dinner out with a restaurant.com certificate, followed by a trip to Rite Aid where all the Valentine's candy is marked down 70-90% off.  :-D

Ditto, in part. Chinese food sounds good. So does a bottle of bubbly, Andre Cold Duck is classy enough for me. And thinking nice thoughts about my wife. And that ought to be enough calories, no need to pounce on discounted red-wrapped candy.

That sounds like an excellent Valentine's Day for a couple of broke-ass shut-ins like us, too. We even have champagne, because we do not drink champagne, but I got some from a vendor around Christmas, which I managed to foist off on my Grandma when we had dinner at her house, but when we got home from dinner it turned out that my aunt had given everybody champagne.

Perfectly serious. I used to work for a big multinational, and a regular challenge was scheduling computer/network outages, upgrades etc. across multiple time-zones. The company was American so "head office" refused to use 24-hour notation (they dismissed that as "military time"), and struggling with people who sometimes used 12pm to mean noon and sometimes midnight, was very... tiring.

So in the joke, was the idea that the iPhone goes flat in four hours or sixteen?

That's.....bizarre.

I'm American and I use 24hr time for everything. I've been using it for years, don't know why. But yes, "PM" typically implies afternoon (post meridiem) and AM (ante meridiem) would mean the morning. Since 12:00 Midnight (0:00HRS) would technically be the start of a new day, it's the morning. Anyone who uses 12PM as midnight is....weird. And wrong. :mrgreen:

2400 is followed by 0001 hours.

See, I would call Midnight "00:00" or "0000", but even if you call it "24:00", no one's going to think of it as "noon". This is why I use a 24HR clock for ev-ry-thang.

I use 24-hour time on any watch, clock or computer that permits me to do so, but it took me way too long to comprehend 12:00 a.m. and p.m. What finally taught me was an app that I use to record a couple of hours of music ending at midnight. The app for several years has reminded me that the end point is 12:00 a.m.

Apparently, there is no ISO norm for am/pm   :psyduck:

I have found style guides calling for both "10am" and "10 a.m.";
I have found style guides calling for upper case, small caps and lower case;
I have found style guides saying 12 is neither am nor pm, so say "12 noon" or "12 midnight" instead;
I have found style guides saying do not use numbers at 12 - just say "noon" or "midnight";
I have found style guides saying don't even use "midnight", because it's ambiguous which day it's in.

Wherever the usage is computer-driven, 12.00pm will always mean noon; but informally, plenty of people will argue the opposite.

The 30th edition of the U.S. Government Style Manual (2008) sections 9.54 and 12.9b recommends the use of "12 a.m." for midnight and "12 p.m." for noon.  The 29th edition recommended the opposite!
