Anyone have the hook to drag Padma stage left?
This.

There are good jokes, there are bad jokes...there are good bad jokes...and then there's this.  The looks Marten and Momo were trading speak volumes.

...

The backgrounds are gorgeous, BTW.

I said it before and I'll say it again: I think Padma's high.  :psyduck:

Permanently?

Anyhow, comments on comic:

1. Nobody has mentioned Elliot's cute little hat yet. Why is this.

2. Padma is one of those unfortunate people who can spot something that is (in her mind) funny but has not the ability with words to shape it into a joke for other people to share.

3. Why is everyone wearing shorts to go hiking? In the UK, I certainly know that long trousers would be first thing on my list. I am not sure if this is a cultural or climatic thing. Or perhaps in the USA they don't have nettles.

Depends on how warm hot it is, how likely there are to be mosquitos (if the number is minimal then shorts with spray often sufficient) and the state of the paths you are going on. I suspect they are all wearing trainers (or sneakers) or something similiar rather than proper solid hiking shoes. Quite possibily they are merely looking to camp in the forest rather than "hiking" in which case they can make do with lighter clothing.

Man, the poster above just melted because a character in a comic on the internet wears a t-shirt with the name of a band which wear capes and average 4 chords per hour. I'm just saying that. Man.
Yeah. And including ))) in the band name (unpronounced apparently) makes the equally silent Heävy Mëtal Ümläut seem quite sensible.

The O))) at the end of their name is not really to "look cool/metal/whatever", it's a tribute to their favorite amps. Sunn Amps So yeah, even the O is silent.
So I wouldn't compare their name to the "Heävy Mëtal Ümläut" at all... I'm just saying.

For a forest near an urban area, the paths will be well worn and wide - nettles and brambles won't be a problem.

And judging by the woods, it's high summer, so shorts are appropriate for some exercise in the heat.

it's a tribute to their favorite amps: Sunn Amps

Jeph commented on twitter how some people linked the shirt to the band, and others to the amps.  He didn't say which he/Marten had in mind (I'm assuming the band).

New theory!

Elliot's wearing a floppy hat.  He's developing a bit of a bald spot, and so protects it when hiking.  That's 'cause he's a bit older than the rest of the crew.

And the woman he's been pining for isn't Padma - it's Jim's ex.  He's watching after Sam for her...

I can hear her now: "Elliot, be a dear and keep an eye on Sam when she's at her father's bakery.  Make sure she doesn't get into too much trouble?"

"Uh, OK, sure thing... "

He takes it very serously.

I see that Jeph has posted a couple alternate versions of panel 1 on Tumblr this morning too.  One of the versions is without text, the other is just the background, and there are hi-res versions of them both.  I'm thinking the later would make an excellent desktop picture.

Any reason the image for the comic is 8-bit, even though it's PNG format, and PNG can support 32-bit colors?

Artist's personal style....  Just because a format can support 32-bit worth of colours, doesn't mean you have to use the full allocation.

I wonder if the solvent in the bug spray is bad for the plastic in Momo's skin.

Kudos on the background.

Momo sprays the stuff on her shorts, not directly onto her skin (/pedantic)

Bandwidth; it costs him money, and 32-bit images are much bigger.

Well, Dora's parents smoked weed. We just saw her get a contact high.
Really?  Maybe I'm remembering it wrong I thought only Marten declined, and she smoked.  I don't think she does it regularly, though.

No, in that strip just her mom smoked (and maybe the dad too). She just got a contact high.

I think it's now been definitively proven that Padma wasn't playing around in strips like #2009 and #2013. She's just plain thick.

What do you want to bet that Momo's social protocol database has a default heuristic that says "if you don't know what to do, and if moral programming doesn't prevent it, do what others are doing"? It's not a bad heuristic in our culture, and as far as I know a better one in Japan. Hence the bug spray.

That's harsh. While I do think that she might be a little bit (lot of bit) slow on the uptake sometimes, I think she's much more silly than stupid. I like her.

And Elliot's hat.

In a PNG with a palette, there can be 256 distinct colours.  Even with that background, I'm surprised that so many of the main blocks of colour are dithered, so I wonder if Jeph is using a non-optimal method of creating the palette in Photoshop (or does he do that bit in Illustrator?).

All I can say is that the background is a bit too much for my deuteranopic eyes. I love the detail, but it's just a bit bright for my liking - which causes, unfortunately, the characters to seem "washed out" in front of it.

Of course, that's why Jeph is a webcomic artist and I'm not.

Nice to see Marten in something besides pants for a change. Let's hope this hike doesn't end poorly for him.

The only way I can see the fairly poor results of #2017 happening is if Jeph's just done the conversion on the default settings, when he really needed to convert the background to 128-colour separately (in advance of joining bg and foreground) to leave a reasonable palette for the characters in the web version of the comic.

Or, failing that, use JPEGs for as long as he's got a background that busy (which he's done at least once before). All that dithering has murdered the filesize (3x the size of #2016) to the point even a full-colour PNG probably wouldn't be much worse.

Samantha has surprised me by jumping after the snake. I did not expect that.

Also her final position in that second panel is amusing.

Also, re yesterday's Padma moment: Padma needs to stop saying the stuff she thinks is funny, because it isn't to others, as someone else said. As someone else who has done the thing Padma is doing many a time, I highly advise her to stop, because she's embarrassing herself.

How the hell did Sam not break something in that fall?  :psyduck:
You do have to wonder...the way she hits her back in the third...position? Segment?...of the fall looks like it should have done some serious, if not permanent, damage.

One of the comics where I'm glad to have a low-rez monitor.  Scrolling through Sam's fall really gave me that 'Oh shit' feeling.

And it's probably too early to speculate, but whatever damage she has, it doesn't appear to be bloody.  In fact, it appears quite... grey and metallic.

Wow, most other girls I've known, in fact, just about ALL other girls I've known, would have damn near killed themselves trying to get AWAY from the snake. Quite a few guys too...

The more I see of Sam, the more she amuses me, and the more I feel sorry for her parents. Can you imagine having a child liable to do crazy stuff like set your kitchen on fire, talk an AnthroPC into showing off her electro-defense feature (possibly on hapless passersby)  or dive off a cliff after a snake? (Yes I know she most likely didn't intend to go over the cliff, but it's lucky for her it wasn't higher...) This child STILL manages to get herself in trouble while under ADULT SUPERVISION!!!

That's a fall of what, ten meters, and she's barely scratched her face. Is she a Terminator?

I use my TV for my monitor and for once I'm grateful for it's terrible native resolution. Scrolling through that fall was an awesome experience. Well drawn by Jeph.

I'm torn 50/50 on if this is "ZOMG ROBITS!" or "The resilience of youth" here.

Me thinks five (or at most six) meters is closer to the mark. She is clearly shorter than Marten, so estimating her height somewhere between 1,5 and 1,6 meters (or between 5ft and 5ft4in). So from the top to the first stump sticking out of the side is about 2 Sams or a bit above 3 meters. Then add one Sam and then some to the bottom.

Still a nasty fall, so I agree with you. The babysitters were not doing their job.

But I love how focused to the task Sam stays thru her fall.

We now know a little more about the capabilities of AnthroPCs. Momo could not move fast enough to prevent possible serious injury to a human.
