Soldier On EP - Andrew Bird

Soldier On, a long, eight-track EP sold at shows on his European tour, doesn't bear the Fingerlings name, but it serves much the same purpose, gathering one demo, one remix and a trove of other artifacts from his past couple years of recording. Some come from various artist compilations, some are completely new, and at least one seems like it might be a glimpse of where he's headed.  The remix of "Plasticities" is a nice example of how pulling apart the elements of Bird's tracks can create a sort of exploded diagram of the song, giving each little detail a new airing, while the early version of "Heretics" is a very basic acoustic guitar-and-voice demo. They're nice, but they're for fans, as is the almost ambient instrumental "Sectionate City". "How You Gonna Keep 'Em Down on the Farm" and "The Water Jet Cilice" are slow, sparse, and mournful tracks that hit on a very specific type of melancholy that Bird seems to be able to reach with minimal effort. Oddly, "The Water Jet Cilice" is not the same piece of music as the instrumental of the same title on Fingerlings 3-- this is a vocal song that shares nothing in common with the other song.  The most remarkable track on the EP is the one that kicks it off, though. "The Trees Were Mistaken" is something new for Bird, and really quite good. It takes the looping technique he's perfected over the years to a new level, throwing blankets of sound over a programmed beat, with dabs of pizzicato violin and splashes of electric guitar splattered across the surface. Bird joins the layers of texture with his voice, riding the song's swelling pulse into a thorny den of oscillating violins and eerie whistling. It's a track that makes this compilation more notable than your average side release-in fact, Soldier On is exceptionally good for a quick collection of rarities, a must-have for fans and a genuine expansion of his range.

Couldn't find the album artwork, I guess it's a leak?  Uh, it's infectious but without any accompanying infection.

Does anyone have that album by the japanese post-rock band Te'?  Pretty much everyone said it was very awesome in that one post-rock thread a little while back, and I haven't been able to find it anywhere.

Moldy Peaches - The Unreleased Cutz and Live Jamz

Since their popular emergence in the late '90s, New York City's Moldy Peaches have solidified -- or justified, depending on your taste -- their status as Big Apple scene-makers with support gigs for neo-punk whiz kids the Strokes and a home-recorded album for the revitalized Rough Trade imprint. MP principals Kimya Dawson and Adam Green create simplistic, often childlike anti-folk informed with a blatant immediacy that only the amateur or uncaring musician possesses. The results are mixed. The Moldy Peaches obviously follow in the lo-fi twee footsteps of Beat Happening, but their penchant for assaulting, Frogs-style humor can kill off the whimsy that defines the best lo-fi and home-recorded pop. Coupled with their gimmicky stage show and the curiously widespread admiration of the band amongst indie cognoscenti, the Moldy Peaches' act often resembles an elaborate inside joke. To their credit, the Moldy Peaches admit that their music is an acquired taste. And Unreleased Cutz & Live Jamz is no different. A two-disc set of 55 rarities, unreleased tracks, and live performances spanning the group's entire eight-year career, it is vintage Moldy Peaches. This is either the best or the worst thing about it. Gentle ballads like "Nothing Came Out" and "Lazy Confessions" recall the early-'90s heyday of the international pop underground or perhaps the Vaselines. But "Greyhound Bus" and "What Went Wrong" are screeching collisions of punk rock squelch and irritating screaming. The live material is hit or miss; a cover of the Spin Doctors' "Two Princes" allegedly includes that group's erstwhile leader, the famously bearded Chris Barron, but the atrocious sound quality makes all but the song's jaunty riff indistinguishable. Unreleased Cutz & Live Jamz is a placeholder release, designed to tide fans over until Dawson and Green can finish with their respective solo albums and record a proper follow-up to Moldy Peaches' self-titled 2001 debut. Like most of the band's output, it is required listening only for those who are in on the joke.

Currently ranked number five on hxcmp3.com, this Athens, Ga. quartet took me by surprise by being both hardcore and original at the same time, a feat rarely accomplished these days. Artfully blending noise-rock with a sound reminiscent of bands like Saetia and Orchid, I Would Set Myself on Fire For You hopefully represents a new trend in the stale world of hardcore music. Mirah (pronounced mear-rah) -- full name Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn -- was born on her mother's kitchen table. The daughter of artistic parents, the singer/songwriter had a passion for music from early childhood. While fronting the jazz band the Hot Set in Olympia, WA, playing wedding parties and bar mitzvahs to earn extra cash, Mirah began writing her own brand of lo-fi, slice-of-life indie pop, a style later compared to that of grrrl-rocker Liz Phair. Powered only by her guitar and standout singing voice -- known around small-town Olympia as the sexiest voice in rock -- Mirah performed her own songs under her own name and people took notice. Phil Elvrum of the psych-pop group the Microphones invited Mirah to lend her lilting voice and guitar playing to the Microphones' albums Don't Wake Me Up and Window. She later toured with the band across North America and Canada. Mirah's first full-length solo album, You Think It's Like This But Really It's Like This, was released in June 2000, under K. Elvrum produced the freshman record, assisting with much of the instrumentation. Yo Yo Recordings released her single-sided album Storageland in 2001. In 2002, Mirah returned to K with the breathtaking Advisory Committee and, with collaborator Ginger Brooks Takahashi, released Songs from the Black Mountain Music Project in summer 2003. 2004 was also busy for Mirah: To All We Stretch the Open Arm (which also featured the Black Cat Orchestra) and C'mon Miracle both arrived that year. The remix collection Joyride appeared in late 2006, while Share This Place, a concept album about the lives of insects featuring Spectratone International, was released in summer 2007.

i had been looking for this for a while and finally found it... thought i would repost it here....

Neva Dinova - Neva Dinova

Omaha-based Neva Dinova has put out a very tidy ten-song, self-titled album. Coming off as a cross between a dreamy, ambient guitar-fronted project, a lounge act ("Lucifer's Lament"), and an Americanized U2, the five lads in Neva Dinova don't seem to falter too much. This album seems suited for the bitter cold days of winter looking out onto pastoral landscapes. Tunes such as "Did You Disappoint Your God?" reflect this gentle mood. The next song, "At Least the Pain Is Real," reflects another side of the band, while not alienating anyone. It starts out with simple guitar and drum work and builds into a pseudo-Radiohead swagger until the chorus bursts at the seams, sending the song all over the place in a beautiful mess. Later on in the tune, the guitar plays out a delicate solo and at the point where one might think it'll play back on itself and repeat, it instead works nicely into a gentle distortion reminiscent of a refreshing drink from a natural waterfall. Definitely an album meant for the more starkly emotional months related back to autumn and winter, this self-titled work shows that there's more going on in Omaha than some might think.

Neva Dinova - The Hate Yourself Change

As Omaha, Nebraska creeps slowly closer to becoming to folksy singer/songwriters what Seattle was to grunge, with Saddle Creek as the movement's Sub Pop, Conor Oberst playing the roll of star-child Kurt Cobain and the Faint somehow wedged in by the media, expect to find Sidecho Records and Neva Dinova in the sidebar of some major media article. Not exploding on to the national stage, but in many ways more worthy than their civic counterparts. Guitarist/vocalist Jake Bellows has an enigmatic quality that is hard to forget, switch hitting between solo acoustic ache on the opener "Hat O'er Eyes" to whiskey-still crooner on Yellow Datsun" where he proclaims "I got morphine in my sleeves. Got some stars in my eyes." On the country dirge of "The Champion," these characters, who include bassists Heath Koontz, drummer Roger Lewis and guitarists Tim Haes and Mike Kratkey could easily be mistaken for Americana figureheads Wilco, but for the dark ambience that fills the gaps between the gingerly strummed Fender telecasters and warbling vintage vibrato. The Hammond takes the lead on "Can't Wait To See You," with the minor-key sorrow given to this sort of backwoods songwriting. Add in the classic line on "Cold Call," "I dream of murder, and you," and you've got one clear case of the poor white-boy blues, but with the male choral of "The worlds a sh*tty place and I can't wait to die" on "I've Got a Feeling," you can't help but snicker. Emo-folk with its heart in the reverb.

It's a real shame that this, like most of the best albums of the 90s, is out of print. The retrospective that came out recently is supposed to be pretty decent, as far as 'retrospectives' go. The two new songs recorded for it were certainly very nice. Dulli produced the album himself, and at times, the production borders on embarrassingly cheesy. Don't let this put you off, most, if not all of the Whigs' output toed the line between brilliance and embarrassment in one way or another, but they put out more great albums than terrible ones.
