Hold on to all loose articles, because the ride could get rough in the next few days. Our author has a history of pulling "BAM" story arcs in the time frame between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Does anyone doubt Jeph reads the forums?

WE KNOW YOU'RE WATCHING US, JACQUES!

Earlier in the year, if I checked when Jeph last logged in (as shown in his profile), it was typically weeks earlier - it reached nearly three months at one point, I think.  Of late, he appears to have been looking several times a week.

(Yes, I know I tell you that you have no need to look over your shoulder if you're sensible here; but I  still look over my  shoulder!)

I've been logging in to check the mod board, and people have been reporting posts.

I'm logged in right now because folks in the ustream were saying you people were bitching about Marten. HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. You fuckers have no idea.

I've been following this comic since it first came out. I've been with it during the good times and teh bad. I would love if Marten goes to California for the change of pace (especially if Hanners somehow finds her way there). But what I would love more is if it is done as a time skip and we have to piece together his experiences via flashbacks. That would be awesome.

Edit: I've never been on the forums before, I made an account just to say the above.

I won't disagree with that. I spend a lot of time around geeks and nerds--I do mean a considerable amount. And the kind of geek Marigold is proving to be is exactly the kind I avoid. We have all been made fun of in our lives as geeks. Our job should be to be as kind as possible to others, to show that we haven't been beaten down by their cruelty, that we can rise above all of the teasing and bullying and insults. We should think of ourselves as equal to others and never as better: That's the kind of thing the awful people do. I know Faye and Marigold have had some stressful times with each other, but I really thought Marigold was capable of rising above her jealousy and agreeing to be friends with Faye. I'm sure Marigold has been made fun of for her glasses and has probably broken them before (or had them broken by someone cruel)--why spread the hate? That's something we need less of, not more. If she doesn't like the way Faye treats people, then maybe she should learn to be an example instead of sinking to her level. Plus, it was just a random, childish thing. It was unnecessary. Surely Marigold knows how to be classier than that. I am just really disappointed.

Soulsynger: The bridge got broken somehow in her pie episode that morning, so she had to tape the pieces of her glasses together, something that is typically associated with bullied nerds (because mean people like to break glasses--I haven't had this happen, but I know it does).

This.
Maybe Marigold is just thinking of her friendship to Faye as something she can be a bit "high-nose" in once in a while. I don't think any of the characters present go into such deep thought about anything Marigold does. I get the feeling they still see her as kinda... simple-minded, no?

Soulsynger: The bridge got broken somehow in her pie episode that morning, so she had to tape the pieces of her glasses together, something that is typically associated with bullied nerds (because mean people like to break glasses--I haven't had this happen, but I know it does).
Far as I know, it got broken by Padma in the Going-Dancing-Storyarc that led to Marten' current dilemma. But I see the reasoning now and it kinda strikes me as obvious.

Lolibot,

I don't really disagree as far as you go, but Faye isn't actually a nerd, and what's more, I think she can take a bit of sass. She's not that thin-skinned.

Aw. I just looked that up and now I'm all disappointed. My dad told me that story as a child, but he presented it as something that had happened in a live news broadcast. Until just now I totally thought some reporter had legitimately dropped a whole bunch of turkeys from a helicopter on live television thinking they could fly, and then had to make a public apology.

I don't think she's thin-skinned, either, but what I mean is that, as a nerd, Marigold should be a lot more sensitive toward other people's feelings if she wishes to be treated kindly in return. I didn't really think of it as sass, more so as Marigold trying to make herself feel like she's better than Faye. And that's what problem I have with it.

Edit: Oops, meant to reply to this!

Just looked it up--I totally forgot about that already. XD Here is Hanners putting the tape on the glasses, which is kind of funny since she mentions taping herself into her shirt here. :P And haha, I know the feeling--no problem. :)

Well, I guess I didn't see it that way myself at all. I mean, everyone in the room knows Marigold is the nerd... I thought that was the whole joke.

I'd give Marigold a bit more credit than you seem to have, basically.

The alpha-bitch*, having been disrespected by one of the weaker members of the pack, must reassert her dominance in order to save face and teach the whelp who's boss.

Or maybe Hannelore will ground her for a week this time.

*I can't find the comic where Dora calls Faye the alpha-bitch, sorry

Wow. :-o

I don't know.

For some reason, Marigold's reaction is so completely not ok with me that I don't feel like commenting on the comic again until at least next Tuesday.

I'm not even really angry, I'm just ... disheartened.

Edit: Maybe it's because Faye got the broken glasses from being punched in the face, and I thought Marigold might be able to better sympathize...

Well, I guess I didn't see it that way myself at all. I mean, everyone in the room knows Marigold is the nerd... I thought that was the whole joke.

I'd give Marigold a bit more credit than you seem to have, basically.
You could be right. :) I guess the reactions of the other characters made me not consider that as an option.

I think I've just seen so many people I know become that kind of person that I may have projected that onto what may be more like an off-moment for her. Plus, Jeph has said that there are times when the jokes are more so him having fun than the characters being plain mean or anything else negative we could interpret them as.

I still feel like she's taking a bad turn here, because as I've heard, "There is truth in jest." Even if it's meant as a joke, it still somehow reflects some part of the person's inner thoughts on something.

We'll just have to wait until the next comic to see if there are any worse reactions. Here's hoping it goes better than I have the bad feeling it will. Sometimes, it's good to be proven wrong.

Aw. I just looked that up and now I'm all disappointed. My dad told me that story as a child, but he presented it as something that had
happened in a live news broadcast. Until just now I totally thought some reporter had legitimately dropped a whole bunch of turkeys from a helicopter on live television thinking they could fly, and then had to make a public apology.

Supposedly, the WKRP turkey episode is (loosely) based on something that really happened.

*I can't find the comic where Dora calls Faye the alpha-bitch, sorry

Wasn't it Pennelope who called her that?

I'm willing to assume Marigirl was kidding unless evidence to the contrary turns up.

To be fair, Marigold doesn't know that's how the glasses got broken. Faye could have easily stepped on them or something.

Going along with the whole "people suck more than they think" thing, everyone has bitchy moments sometimes, and Marigold's had a couple already (brushing off Momo seconds after complaining she wouldn't have time for her anymore; the little "bye Faye!" she gleefully gave after Faye realized she was crushing on Angus). It's part of Marigold's social ineptness- she can't see the line between friendly teasing and just plain being an ass (and not self-aware enough to see what a hypocrite she's being). It's something she needs to be corrected on, and I have a feeling she's about to get "corrected" quote soundly.

Reading this forum makes me worry I'm actually a terrible person, just unaware...

Well, I'd say that the position of that line is very subjective.

Oh, and by a funny coincidence... the very comic after the "alpha-bitch" one is this one:

http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=954

Panel 4. In particular, what Faye says in panel 4.

Marigold's banter seems well within bounds for friends, I'd say; and the glasses held together with sticking plaster look has been used, in cartoons at least, to indicate "nerd" since forever (by which I mean back to the 1960s at least - I don't know if Poindexter was the origin of it, though).  Faye is clearly sensitive about her haircut, let along the broken glasses.  I'm not sure whether Hanners is shocked at Marigold's forthrightness, or at the prospect of Faye punching her.

I'm not sure why people are freaking out at Marigold.  Yeah, what she said was impulsive and insensitive, but it's not like this was the first time she's done something like this.  I'm sure she'll apologize soon enough (possibly off-screen) and everyone will be happy friends again.  Besides, it's not like Faye hasn't made impulsive and insensitive comments before, just of a different kind.

I wonder if I'm the only person slightly nervous about the "HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. You fuckers have no idea" post we got from Jeph.

Like he's about to do something absolutely batshit insane to his characters.

Because of us fuckers.

I note that, although Dora says "That's what I said!", what she actually said was "Omigod your hair!" whereas the word Hanners uses is "Omigosh". Little details like that are how we can see the characters' different personalities. As for me, my exclamation would surely have included an F-bomb...

As for Marigold, I think she is just revelling in the opportunity to call someone else a dork.
