That Special Thread - Onward, ever Onward!
« on: 01 Jan 2012, 02:27 »

Here's the link to last year's thread:  Wink, wink, 2011!
Also: 2010, 2009, 2008; no earlier threads survive.
Consider also the Mixtape Thread.

Rules for this thread:

  • Please ensure your tags are correct, and that you have specified both Artist/Album in your post.  It's good to give pointers to what the music is like, too.

  • No hot-linking images or albums. You can re-host images at your favourite image hosting site (e.g. http://imageshack.us).

  • Upload your files in either a .zip or a .rar archive to Mediafile, in multiple parts if necessary. We know MF is reasonably safe and efficient and allows multiple downloads, but there are comparable alternatives. The ads on some other sites, such as Sendspace, not uncommonly contain viruses on the page. Get yourself checked out.

  • Post your link using code tags. It's the # icon above the policeman emoticon. This helps prevent the links from being traced back to the forums, lowering the chance that the wrong people notice the thread, potentially threatening Jeph with legal action.

  • The forum software automatically changes the name MF to avoid being found by search engines - remember to correct it when using the URLs you find here.

  • Please do NOT request albums; this includes requests for re-uploads.  If you miss it, try looking for it somewhere else.

  • Repost the rules at the top of each new page

This is a Nashville band I've been following really closely since I found their first ep here a few years ago. Their new full length just leaked, and it's pretty fucking sweet. It's country-folk with a washy-electronic accents here and there. I feel like this is the most appropriate place it could be posted.

I really am loving the First Aid Kit having listened to it on a stream, but is this a CD rip, or a stream rip?

yeah I had considered sharing the OM a couple weeks ago, but after listening to it, decided otherwise.  That said, I am still interested to hear anyone's positive review of Paralytic Stalks.

Nothing to do with MF, just a matter of who's contributing or not.  The main crowd who used to feed this thread went to another forum last summer; but they have not started a comparable thread there.  So this is much slower now - but there is still interesting stuff sometimes.

This thread has come so far since Emilio and I started it way back when.

I'm at work right now, but I think I need to make a bit of a megapost, since I haven't uploaded anything in quite a while.

I used to take advantage of this thread a lot, and it's kind of sad to see it so devoid of life.  I have a bunch of my stuff on my To Upload checklist (including Air's new soundtrack album, Django Django, Porcelain Raft, and Grimes), so hopefully I'll get around to that soon and give a little back to the community and whatnot.

That is their self-titled EP from wayyyyyyyy back in 2001. Supposedly they're putting out a new EP in April, though!

side note: I was just flipping through the '08 thread. Half of the jazz albums I downloaded from Harry's post, I now own on vinyl. Fantastic.

This is an instrumental album I made in 24 hours. I'm a hip hop producer.. This is just a collection of spacey instrumentals. Relatively repetitive beats, but if you dig beats, check it out.

I think everyone should listen to Dirty Three

"Melancholy instrumental trio Dirty Three formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1992, led by classically trained violinist Warren Ellis, who began writing and performing music for art openings and plays and also tenured in the groups Blackeyed Susans, Paranoid, and the Nursing Mothers." - Allmusic

Basically Dirty Three is the trio you'll dig if you like Grails, some A Silver Mt. Zion, a bit of Grinderman/Bad Seeds and a touch of Bonnie "Prince" Billy. They are absolutely amazing at what they do, instrumental atmospheric rockmusic, especially Jim White on the drums spans from doing machinegun-like beats to perfectly timed snares. Everything he does is important to the overall experience of these two emotional journeys.

Protip: if you want to expose likeminded music lovers to your favorite jams, please adhere to Paul's suggestion and give a description of what it is! (and no, putting 'awesome' in italics below the album art doesn't count!) Sure, I may get flak for "adhering to the trappings of genre tags" or whatever, but frankly, I hate 90% of electronic music, and I don't want to waste time/bandwidth/exposure to risk of legal consequences downloading some dubstep tracks I'm not even going to like in the first place. Please be courteous and help your fellow listeners out!

Post your link using code tags. It's the # icon above the policeman emoticon. This helps prevent the links from being traced back to the forums, lowering the chance that the wrong people notice the thread, potentially threatening Jeph with legal action.

  • No hot-linking images or albums. You can re-host images at your favourite image hosting site (e.g. http://imageshack.us).

  • Upload your files in either a .zip or a .rar archive to MF, in multiple parts if the album is over 200Mb. The reason for this is that we know MF is safe and efficient and allows multiple downloads. The ads on other sites, such as Sendspace, not uncommonly contain viruses on the page.

Honestly, I haven’t even listened to this all the way through yet.

But it’s the fucking Shins—or at least James Mercer, who’s pretty much the Shins anyway—so you have to download it, if only to see if it can possibly live up to your expectations of The New Shins Record™.
