I mean she DOES know how long Tai's been crushing on her.

Wait, she does? I thought she was pretty oblivious to it. But if she -is- aware, she sure as hell isn't giving any indication of it.

  • I been rockin' this brainslug since I was like, 5.

She's just cluelessly self-centered during this date.  It's awful to see.  I love Dora, but damn.

Come on now - she's not being self-centered, I think she's just nervous or anxious.  I had a date recently in which, in retrospect, I'd inadvertently spent way too much time talking about myself.  Doesn't mean that I'm self-centered(i am like the painful opposite of that), it just means that words just kept flowing and flowing out because of nerves.  Sometimes it's hard to remember to keep asking questions of the other person, especially if you're nervous.  I mean, hopefully, the conversation just flows naturally, but we don't know if this one is or isn't (presumably it is).  Also keep in mind that we're not seeing the whole conversation - there may indeed so many other parts where Tai is talking about herself and whatnot, so we shouldn't jump to conclusions.

Whether this is a case of obliviousness, nervousness, or just plain dumbfoundedness...Dora's really gotta watch her words. Tai really seems to be struggling to keep things working here. To be honest, I really feel sorry for her.

As much as I don't want it to, I can see it crashing and burning if Dora doesn't turn her current mentality around.

Let's just wait and see. Jeph seems to like to fill the dates with foot-from-mouth moments and such mishaps. Remember how well then Sven+Hanners (preten)date ended even though Sven was not at his best at the restaurant.

Yeah, although it was rather overshadowed by the "Africa" date ending. :P

Actually, most dates in QC have arguably ended well, even Dora's date with Jim.

I don't know about Steve, though... His one with Meena ended with them listening to her "ex-future-fiancee" playing porn on his TV, and his one with Cosette ended with her being carted off in an ambulance.

I dunno.  From expressions, to style of dress, to repeated foot in mouth (and not even realizing it), to the being pursued comment.  There is more than that going on.  It is plainly obvious she's enjoying being pursued and she seems far more interested in the benefits of herself right now than showing any true interest in Tai.

More than that, she really seems to be a relaxed space cadet more than anything. I see no nerves -at all- going on here, in facial expression or, more importantly, body language. I mean, in half the panels she's staring off into space with that slight smile, and not even looking at Tai when she talks half the time. 'Disconnected' i probably the best term I have for it.

Exactly.  Flippant and "Disconnected" describes it perfectly.  I see no bundle of nerves.  She seems distracted to the point of indifference.  Definitely not showing much interest in Tai as you would expect after she out of leftfield kissed Tai.

I wouldn't call her distractedness the result of "indifference;" to the contrary, I think she's just so happy to be being pursued that she's letting her mouth run away with her. Not because she doesn't care, or doesn't think she needs to, but because she's happy and not trying to be overly concerned about every statement she makes for once. And honestly, with Dora, when she stops particularly paying attention to NOT saying stupid things, it makes sense that that would result in foot-in-mouth scenarios left and right.

First time poster (who would have posted on Friday but forgot to de-spam pony-whatsit) and occasional lurker here  :-)

What I think  we're going to see next week is Dora struggling to get a second date from a disillusioned Tai and thus the persuee will become the persuer. I'm still not feeling Tai and Dora as a couple, but I'd love to see Dora deciding whether she genuinely wants to date Tai and pull her socks up accordingly (nicer ones than she's wearing, dear lord Dora, just be yourself).

I'm seriously hoping the tables will be turned on Dora, even if she only comes to the conclusion that she and Tai should be friends (and also because I liked Jim and want to see more of him and Sam via Dora-dating).

Anxiety and nervousness just aren't reflective of Dora's personality. She's anxious about things like meeting the parents, as many normal people would be, but when it comes to something she wants or expects...nope. Proactive all the way.

Looking back on it, she was a good match for Marten. She encourages him to be more forthcoming, something I couldn't see with any of the other QC ladies.

EDIT: Those fucking socks. I had to go back and check after someone made a comment about it, but goodness, they really are horrible. She needs to excuse herself for a midday change.

How I always figured it to be.  Insecurity is reflective of Dora's personality.  Made clear with Faye.  But she had no problem making it known that to Marten her worries about Faye.  (Granted, even then she let it go to hell but).  Dora is proactive from a comic perspective about what she wants.  And she makes it clear what she wants and isn't ready for.  (Letting Jim down easy was a good step of growth for her).

I just don't know how one can excuse and gloss over Dora's thoughtlessness, repeated thoughtlessness I might add, and staring off into lala land and not really paying attention to Tai.  That isn't how nervousness manifests.  Now when you add up ALL the errors Dora has had since the kiss.  Doesn't jive with me.  I don't recall Dora EVER blubbering this much or being spacey when she just started off with Marten.  Again back to the argument that, comparing the beginnings, Marten was something Dora always wanted while Tai is just something random she's following, subconsciously maybe, so far, because of the joy of being chased.

We know she gave no thought to this whole relationship, so therefore she has no anxiety about it. Right now, she's probably in the same shoes Marten was after The Kiss on the rooftop - discombobulated, disoriented and such. She IS disconnecting with things - which is giving Tai a "where the #### is the Dora that I was lusting/longing for?" feeling.

This will not end well.

Whoa hey, let's not get too ahead of the comic. True, Dora did make a couple of goofy comments and looks generally aloof, but Tai hasn't become disillusioned yet. The last panel we know of has Tai tripping over herself to impress the woman.

I don't think we're out of some lesbian sex quite yet!

So ... will Marten have a reaction to the impending crash beyond "Oh jeez, oh jeez ... "? Is it his place? Will he think it is?
I'll watch.
This strikes me as an odd expectation.  Dating in my (limited) experience is a pretty high contact sport.  There are few 'fouls' recognized.  If things don't work out, the criteria for throwing a flag are pretty much 1)cheating, 2)abuse and 3)theft/damage to stuff.  #2 is fairly broad, but its above and beyond just not meeting somebody's expectations of martyring yourself for love.
You play the game right, there's a lot of emotional energy involved. Somebody usually gets hurt before its over.
If Tai goes psycho-posessive or Dora goes narcissistic insensitve, well, they are both big girls.
I think it would honestly be kind of patronizing if Marten rode in on a white... whatever.
Turn it around.  If Angus got hurt, would you expect Marten to 'rescue' him?

I thought their effort was aDORAble, but then one pun probably isn't enough to TAI'd you over... :D

Ahem.

I can see where you're coming from, and I do agree with you to a point. This date couldn't have gone worse so far unless snakes were involved, but you can see Tai is trying desperately to hold things together, which is rather noble of her.

I don't know whether Dora is oblivious to Tai's advances (personally, I doubt it very much), but she is pretty oblivious to her own words, and unless either Tai steps in and tells her so, or puts a rain-check on the remainder of the date (if she decides to follow through at all), or Dora snaps out of whatever la-la-land she's occupying and realises the change in Tai's attitude, it's hard to see this ending happily.

Personally, I would love to see Tai and Dora work this out (not just on the "hurr hurr lesbians hurr" level, more on the "they deserve to be happy and I would love to see that" level).

Who said anything about "rescuing" or even taking sides? I'm talking about Marten being a mensch, looking outside himself and doing whatever being a Decent Human Being requires for either or both of two people for whom he obviously gives a damn. He did that for Faye on at least two occasions I can think of, including when she was anxious about her then-budding relationship with Angus. No horses of any color need be involved.

I don't get the vibe that the date is going quite as disastrously as everyone's saying. Yes, there were a couple (funnily) uncomfortable things said that we were privy to, but there's no reason to think the rest of the date that was going on "off-screen" hasn't been going perfectly well. I agree that if Dora's head CONTINUES to stay in the clouds following the date and for some time after that there'll be a problem, but it didn't really seem to me like Tai had been going out of her way the entire date to prevent disaster, besides the understandable Bubble Tea intervention of course

I wonder if Marten will really be very closely aware of whats going on.  Tai: "Let me tell you about my date with your ex-girlfriend",  Dora: "Hey, I know we don't talk much, but let me tell you about my date with Tai."

It seems a tad early to be drawing long-reaching conclusions about the relationship. I'm sure there are more than a few long-term relationships that have had more awkward starts than this.

Not that I'm saying that this one will definitely succeed either, but come on.
