Good 'un...

Reminds me of the dialog through a crack in the door:

Householder: "Hello?"
7th Day Adventist missionary: "Hello! We'd like to talk to you about your chance for salvation! May we come in?"
H: "Sure, if you'll follow the customs of our home."
M: "er... ok... what customs??"
H, opening door: "We're nudists!"

Can you think of anything that beats water for specific heat? Let alone heat of vaporization? It's not a great *conductor* of heat, but as long as it's moving relative to the hot object (convection, swimming) it's exceptional.

Damn, I spent like thirty minutes browsing the archives to check out if the old guy were the same as the one in that comic but apparently not.

I thought the lady appeared in a previous strip, but......no joy.

Thank god, she's my favorite of the new characters. I'm hoping she starts to get shown more.

I'm going pendrake on this post...

  • I must say that I found all of this weeks comics funny so far. As in "makes me laugh" funny. I find QC always interesting, most of the time amusing, smirkworthy and chuckleworthy, but not always laughworthy.
  • It's the first time we see Emily blush. It's even the first time we see Emily fazed by anything.
  • I like how Tai, past the first moments of embarrasment, is completely comfortable with hanging out with a naked guy.

I'm not too surprised. I think she's got just the right amount of Osaka in her that she's innocent, but not clueless. Or was it the other way around?

I do like that she's got her own style of baka, different from Raven.

Pix or it never happened! :-D   It is however often possible to walk across Lake Eyre.

Can you think of anything that beats water for specific heat? Let alone heat of vaporization?
Ammonia (NH3) has the highest specific heat capacity of any known substance. ;)  It's not as good as water for latent heat of vapourisation, but its convenient phase-change temperatures make it a very useful refrigerant.

Ammonia, 4.7 J/g/K (yes, as Akima said, better than water. I was surprised.)
Helium, 5.2 J/g/K
Hydrogen, 14.3 J/g/K

That innocent-looking "per gram" conceals a really important practical issue. A gram of water, or of ammonia pressurized into the liquid phase, is spectacularly more compact than a gram of hydrogen or helium. A heat sink big enough to contact a gram of hydrogen would be much less convenient.

Now, if Momo is air cooled by default, she may have heat sinks mounted directly on electronic components, in which case her waterproofing would have to seal her air vents and not let water contact the heat sinks, and then we'd be back to the overheating problem.

Are we overanalyzing yet?

That's assuming that her internal components aren't already waterproof by design to prevent arcing from incidental water contact. She may not even have a classic circuit board as we know it in that entire chassis as far as we know.

That old lady ass seems to be in remarkably good shape. Most at her age are about 6-8 inches below that. :-o

And just how many naked old-lady butts have you seen, in order to judge that?

Old people are not necessarily large, I would like to point out.

But these are.  It's clearly because of her awesomely delicious cookies.

[EDIT] Whoops!  My memory pulled up a name from one of the caption thread posts, so it's not canon.

Point. We know that Pintsize has a "motherboard" but he is a far cheaper model. The Idoru Platinum Deluxe may have a radically different design.

I'm picturing that Momo's main cavities are sealed, and that there are heat-pipes from the main hot components (cpu, etc) to the casing which acts as an overall heat-sink and heat exchanger.

Well, that's odd. I read the comic immediately after Jeph posted it, and Clinton's final line was "It was a spider bite".

But now, "It was a fireworks accident".

I tried refreshing the page a few times to see if Jeph was serving comics up from a random pool of alternative punchlines, but it hasn't changed any more.

  • The distilled essence of Mr. James Beam himself.

It was determined in an earlier strip (by Claire herself) that it was a fireworks accident.  Gotta get to work, though, so I'll let someone else archive it...

A fine example of Jeph checking his own archive to avoid ret-conning.

Don't feel bad! I had to look it up, and that's with a physics degree.

Momo still has a social protocol database, I see.

It would indeed be a sound design to run heat pipes to the outer covering, but then you'd have to make the outside thermally conductive. A skin substitute is probably an insulator.

Somehow it's right that Momo wears a modest swimsuit.

Pony tails. She's worn her hair like Marigold (on and off) since strip 2000.

Exceptions: 2005, 2028, 2305. Interestingly, when Marten pulled her out of the lake, she had ponytails.
