What the.... also, welcome to the forum.

Thank you! :) Saw the polls had to share. At the time, I think one of the weirdest parts was thinking, "Wow. That guy either has to have a spandex fetish or has no idea what else is here. He should have grabbed Spiegel" Spiegel is a german magazine like People is here--except Germans are apparently more open about sex so you'd find articles in it that had pictures like Playboy--except some with S&M. A lot of these would get ripped or neatly cut out. XD

Also, is Claire jealous of Marten for having dated Dora, or Dora for having dated Marten?

Yes.

Wondering who Claire is calling lucky. For some reason I assume it's Marten. This would mean she's bi?

Doesn't have to mean that. She might consider Dora to be way above Marten's level without wanting to sex her up herself.

Thank you for that. And no, not yet.

Haha! Great first post. Made me giggle.
I never quite understood why people would do that in a public place and not at home.

And Germans aren't quite as tightly clenched about sex as Americans but we're still very much by European standarts. The thing with the Spiegel is just that they like to push boundaries ... (plus, for obvious reasons, it sells.) °O

I found it weird that Marten said "it's complicated". Um, no it isn't. Dora and Marten broke up, they were apart for ages, Marten got with Padma, Tai asked him if it would be ok if she dated Dora, Dora and Tai got together. It's actually the least complicated reconstitution of friendship-group-relationships I've seen in a long time.

I just took it as "I'll explain later, right now I've got stuff to do." as in "It's complicated to explain why it's okay." ...

But actually, it isn't... okay, I don't get it either.

edit:
I just got it. He meant the whole ordeal from start with Faye to break up with Dora and the reason why when he said "It's complicated."

-> "It's complicated, I had a crush on Faye once but it turns out she had abandonment issues and was a nervous wreck of sorts. So when she told me and I had to stop crushing on her, her boss, Dora, dashed in and when that broke apart over HER insecurity issues caused by self-doubt yadda..."

Talk about ping-pong-ball-syndrome.

Whenever I do get around to copulation, I intend for it to be more about pleasing my partner than scratching my own itch, since if I wanted to please myself I have a hand.

Pleasing my partner is how I scratch my itch. I may be an anomaly, but pleasing the person I am with is how I achieve gratification. Masturbation just doesn't quite cut it.

Withdrawal (to me) is better than putting up with someone not worth the hassle just to get laid; or worse yet, since no (non surgical) birth control method by itself that I know of is 100% effective....having a child with someone that would be a bad choice as a long term partner/parent.

Being a lady who exclusively has sex with other ladies is a pretty surefire way to avoid pregnancy. It has worked so far. But, yea, for straight couples I can certainly see that an issue, though there is a pill for that. As far as "putting up with someone" goes, there really isn't that much to put up with for a casual encounter/relationship.  Generally, most people are decent people and are pretty interesting if you give them a chance. I find nearly all women physically beautiful in one way or another (barring extreme outliers) and most of them are beautiful inside as well.  If they have a shitty personality, then I am not going to be attracted to them anyway. I am pretty good at reading people, if someone is a shitty person I generally pick up on it right away and move on.

I am trying to get a read on Cliare's "luckyyyy". The way she states her first line suggest she is shocked that Marten could get someone like Dora. But, the way she attempts to come to his defense against Tai, suggests she thinks Marten is the desirable one.  Or maybe she was just surprised to find that Tai's gf used to be Marten's. She hasn't been around this group long enough to realize what an incestuous little clan it is.

It's probably your first thought. Many times when people see a average guy dating a "hot" girl, it's assumed he got lucky, that she "took pity" on him somehow. And let's face it, that is pretty much how it happened, what with Dora moving in on Marten soon after Faye said she couldn't get with him. Sure Dora was attracted to Marten, but she could have gotten so annoyed at his passivity and indecision over dating her that she could have written him off as a dating prospect.

For a guy like Marten, who isn't all that smooth with the ladies, getting with someone like Dora is "getting lucky".

I think that Claire is developing a crush on Marten and that she thinks Dora was the lucky one.  It must end badly for her because Marten has already said it would be unethical   and also does not like the idea of dating a trans woman.

Thanks to everyone who told me how to  hide the url of a link.

I can show you how easily to find out: "Quote" the post above yours. Look at the syntax of the url, and how the words used to refer to it are placed.
I haven't memorized the technique, so that's how I look for each time I need it. Others might have a simpler method. You can pull out the url reference and put it somewhere for easy reference.

This is my first post -- can someone tell me how to  hide the url of a link?

Welcome to the forums!

I will give you the "unethical" point, but the way I see it, the latter post does not imply that he would be unwilling to get in the sack with a trans woman. I think it's just him going along with the "trans women who used to be men are a turn off" clichee/joke. (And outside the universe, I suspect Jeph might have forgotten about the comment anyway).

That said, I don't like the idea of Marten getting together with Claire too much either; to me, she is somewhat lacking depth. She would be like the Ginny of QC.

Now I am gonna hide under my bed because there is bound to be a Ginny x Harry fan here somewhere with pitchforks and torches.

Yeah, things have kind of changed even in the world at large since that strip was written, in '06 - I think there are a lot of people who might have made a joke like that then who wouldn't now.

I took "lucky..." to mean lucky to mean she had something for Dora, going back to the theme from two days ago.  I actually had thought she was blushing in that panel, but now she doesn't appear to be...?  Huh.  Might be just saying he was a lucky guy, or as has been said that Dora was lucky, but probably the less said about that idea the better.

(I actually took the last panel of that last strip to mean she was starting to feel something for Marten, but then I noticed Marten's face in the previous panel and got it right.)

Really easy way to create a link - type the words you want the link to be (so for example these are the words I want to put my link in) and then select those words, click the picture of the globe with a piece of paper on it, and magically url tags will appear. After "url" in the first one, type =http://www.thisisnotareallink.com and voila!

Yeah, way easy to dig up stuff from the past in either case. Just look at the dishonest quote-mining a lot of religious/ideological people do of the already-dead-so-can't-argue-anymore who lost their faith at a later point in their life. Besides, it's not like people don't change from actually knowing others rather than just as an abstract concept. I know of a guy who was full on "All homos should be in death camps" in his own words prior to watching the movie Philadelphia of all things and is now totally fine with LGBT people.

Regarding Marten and trans people, I'm pretty sure the point of his comment was that it would be a hard thing to learn directly and specifically after sex with the trans person in question, not a comment on trans people in general or the possibility of having a relationship with one.

Regarding Claire, Martens luck, and Steves shoulders, I think she's just acknowledging that both Dora and Steve are very attractive without any subtext regarding her own inclinations or her opinion of Marten (except his shoulders).

Question: what was Claire's original name? Her brother is Clinton, so I'm going to guess 'Carl,' just so I can imagine Clinton saying "CARRRRRRL!"

Myeah, although that isn't really a thing that happens to any noteworthy extent. Immoral if you think they'd object (and if you don't: no point in hiding) and a quick way to become part of the sizable statistic of murdered transwomen if it's the.. less-than-stable sort of person.

Question: what was Claire's original name? Her brother is Clinton, so I'm going to guess 'Carl,' just so I can imagine Clinton saying "CARRRRRRL!"

Maybe she didn't change a thing. ;)  "The name was traditionally considered male, specifically when spelled Clair; however, it is now commonly used as a female name and is usually spelled Claire."

If I were to transition to male, which I wouldn't because I'm definitely cis, I already have two male names which are both perfectly acceptable first names. I have them because they happen to be my surnames, but still.

I think overall, Marten simply wants to forget about the whole thing. He doesn't really like to fight and a co-worker is dating is his ex. But I think what Claire had said needed to be mentioned in the first place. I think they are simply trying to just get around the rhino blocking the road, instead of talking it out. And I'm going to say this now, I like the idea of Dora not getting laid. She definetely needs to suffer a bit.

I think it's more 'doesn't care' than 'wants to forget'. He's over it and moved on and not angry or disgruntled anymore.

As for Dora, her greatest punishment is being with her own mind.

Regarding the name Claire was given at birth:
More often than not, it seems (from what I've seen) that people transitioning choose a name that is completely and utterly different from their birth name. She could have been "Wendell" for all we know. Just some food for thought.

Yeppers, it's pretty common. It's also neat when some people find out alternative names their parents were considering if they had had a child born the other sex. Though I was an accident that made it through birth-control, so they found out which.
