Is it possible to... I don't know...  store him in suspension on Pluto until they get things sorted out?

He's swell and all, but it's time for him to let go and let others play in the sandbox.  :)

He was fine when it came to making an outline, but crap when he tried to write and direct himself, with no outside input.

At this point, I'd rather him have nothing to do even with the outline. I like MDBS's idea.

Some "creative" types function better when supervised and kept within strict boundaries.

A few AU should be a suitable minimum distance to set his boundary at.

Regarding the name Claire was given at birth:
More often than not, it seems (from what I've seen) that people transitioning choose a name that is completely and utterly different from their birth name. She could have been "Wendell" for all we know. Just some food for thought.

My former name was Alan. It's still my favourite boy's name.
I picked the new name Zoe - sort of an A-to-Z change , though that wasn't why I did it.

At age 10, I was certain by then I'd been put in the wrong group. They weren't big on sex ed in the UK in the 60s, I thought the differentiation only happened at puberty - i had no idea that boys and girls were born looking different.

I was a bit concerned about the problems that would arise when everyone realised a silly mistake had been made, but I thought adults knew what they were doing, and everything would get fixed. Naive isn't strong enough a word.

Anyway.. I picked the name sometime between May and October, 1968.
Later, at Uni, I dropped Astrophysics for Computer Science, but kept with the Pure Maths.

If you don't get the reference to my roll model, the girl I wanted to be like - and am like to a great extent, in personality anyway - you don't know your Dr Who companions.

As you should. . .

And for the record, Lucas should be cast in Carbonite and dumped into the Maw before anyone starts the next Star Wars.

Emily just jumped up into first place on my list of favourite characters. She was already high on the list, this little exchange edged her the rest of the way up.

Bluesummers, I think it's more because all the girls die? Not necessarily in the show, but eventually? And he doesn't want to deal with that? Am I missing a joke here?

Claire is still kind of overreacting. I mean, that's pretty much exactly what happened with my parents (except the parental roles reversed) and I don't jump to those conclusions. It says something about Claire, sure: it tells us how she reacts to people cheating. We already knew that from her reaction to what she thought was cheating!

That's my middle name! It is a pretty cool name, and I'd almost consider going by it instead of Eric, but I don't think I would like it at all when people inevitably called me Al.

My name is Syl. If I were to transition, I'd likely change my name to Syd. Close enough to be familiar and not a jarring change, but masculine enough to satisfy the male identification thing.

That's pretty much the reason he leaves people behind. Being with him is dangerous. He doesn't want them to die on some planet millions of lightyears away from where they're from, in a time they weren't even born yet.
On the other hand, traveling alone doesn't do him good.
So he's kinda torn between not wanting to rip people out of their lives and not wanting to be alone.

Also Zoe: Jamie and Zoe are best. As is the second Doctor. You're awesome.

Basically, that idle musing on what one's name would be if one transitioned probably doesn't reflect the mindset of those who do.

Oh I see. Well I suppose so, but part of me feels that when you're making a decision like that, what your name will become is probably not the biggest part of it - an important part, but not the most important!

I do agree that the name is important but not the most important. It's always good to feel like the label people identify you by actually matches how you feel. One of my friends had a very pretty, very unusual female name from birth but has transitioned into using a very old-fashioned male name (and legally too!), so I don't think it's unreasonable to wonder about such things. If you're going to be called something, it would be nice if it reflected how you feel inside. :) I personally wish I had a more androgynous name. I don't know what I would prefer, but I do feel a bit uncomfortable having a name that's strictly female (except when I filled out bubble-in forms at school and my whole name wouldn't fit--then I get a male version of my name XD). I highly doubt I'll ever change it, but I've never particularly liked my name. When The Lion King came out, I insisted that my family call me "Ed" since it was so much shorter than my name. :P I have quite a few drawings and things buried deep at home with "Ed" on them where my name should be. XP I was secretly really thrilled when I found out that a female character in an anime (Cowboy Bebop) is named Ed/Edward so I felt a bit less alone in liking the name for myself.
(click to show/hide)

Also, I really like that you can tell that Emily hasn't had her hair fixed up from when she cut it. The edges are all jagged. :-D It's a nice touch.
I think that I've had one of those moments before, except I believe I was told to do something cute, and I was baffled. :?

  • What's disease? Where?

Comic 2369, panel 1...
... what's happening in the window there?  What kind of store is that? What are they selling?  Why does it look like there's some Shakespearean production happening on the other side of the glass that we're not privy to?
It's the same window of an establishment called "...Solace" as in 1844 panel 3, adjacent to a store from which a fairy emerges. Someone suggested a yoga studio. I had a vague thought of an orgy, but that's probably just wishful thinking.

Um. Just a link that might be helpful. I don't know a lot about programming either, but I found out about this site called Coursera where you can take online courses. They have this one that's an introduction to Computer Science course. The actual class hasn't happened yet but the material is available for independent study. I've been following along with the material and it presents it in a way that's pretty easy to understand.

Here's where you can find it: https://www.coursera.org/course/cs101

I think they have other more advanced CS courses as well.
