I want to say they are playing with Couches (Slow Trucks other band).  They just played a show together here in Boise last weekend.  During Treefort Music Fest a local bar hosted a 20 Sided Records showcase and I saw Ugly Winner.  They were my favorite band of the entire festival.  They didn't have any merch at the time when I tried to buy some, but I found a 12" of Inside Your Wave at my local record store a week later.  I need to see that band again.  My friends have also played a lot with Tartufi so they might do a show together.  They are still setting it up but plan to stay and play shows for most of a week.

oh fuck I totally was supposed to find Couches a show here in Livermore earlier this month but every venue was either too small to be pleasant or too stick-up-assy about things to say yes.

When I was in Alaska, I was basically adopted by the family of 2 of my coworkers. One was the mom, who I of course wound up calling Mom a lot. The other was the eldest son, Davida. The youngest daughter, who was maybe a year old when I met her, is now 6. Cutest little thing ever, it was always so much fun playing with her and her brothers.

Well, turns out, Baby Girl's got a pair of tumors at the base of her skull. Been there with her since birth. They're being biopsied at a children's hospital in Seattle, but we're all scared pretty stiff. Fuck me, man, what a couple days it's been. News doesn't filter so fast from Alaska so it's been stressful.

Good wishes to the child.

So a guy I know just texted me. Apparently there is an RPG convention in Cologne tomorrow and he was looking for someone to tag along.

Looks like I am going to Cologne

So I am back from Cologne and I bought a lot of geeky stuff!

  • a mug which can hold up to 0.5l of liquid and is labeled as containing "Major Healing Potion"
  • a 7-dice-set
  • DnD - Hero Builder's Guidebook
  • DnD - Dungeon Survival Guide (which turned out to be less useful than I expected)

I also got to play Mafia (was killed off on second night; still had fun because of the wacky people :-D)

You wake up in Tokyo, nine hours gone, it is what was previously tomorrow, you have briefly traveled around half a day into the future. You wake up in LAX, another nine hours gone, it is the same day you left, in fact it's before your flight even takes off, time travel again, this time briefly into the past, and in the course of two regular flights that thousands of human beings make every single day you have covered what just a few centuries ago would have been years worth of travel. What any rational human being of the day would call a complete impossibility. You have also completely screwed your cosmic ledger sheet for time remaining on your life, is it total time? Or is it by calendar days? How do you factor in time gained or lost via time travel? Whether there is a god or not, one fact remains, we are all on the clock, right now. There is no stopping it, no time outs, no breaks, and when your clock stops... it's just stopped. From this perspective any way. What did you do today to make your remaining time worth living no matter if that's minutes or years? Did you love? Did you dare? Are you doing something you truly love and are passionate about? Or did you shrink from risk, thought of yourself when you could have loved with the kind of passion that poets are inspired by, are you enslaved to work you hate surrounded by people you despise? Or are you dedicating the brief time you have to giving everything to your passion? You wake up in LAX.

  • Dealing with it.

So I'm driving home yesterday night. Rain comin down. Some piece of shit decides he needs to exit on the left and must move from the right to get there. Not usually a big deal but he had to so it at 20mph when the speed limit coming off that section of road is 55mph. So I see this happening and the car in front of me is slowing down so I ease onto the brakes, there's definitely enough room that I can drop my speed some and they'll be moving again by the time I close the gap. Well I realized Mr piece of shit decided that going above 20mph was not going to happen and had to brake hard to not smash the guy between us. I am talking to jess on the phone (speakerphone) and as I brake I go "woahhhhh guy what--" and the braking causes the phone to slide onto the ground as my box of paint also slid off the passenger seat, causing some crash sounds. Then came trying to explain that no I didn't crash I am just glad I got new brakes a couple weeks ago. Then mr piece of shit stopped on the on ramp to the highway instead of merging properly.

And this morning a deer was 2 lanes onto the highway as I was switching from one highway to another so I slowed down as to not hit it. It stopped, turned around to hop back over the fence, but before it did, it called me the n-word. Deer be fucked up.

I spent a good few hours browsing Wondermark because there was a conversation I had with my sister which reminded me of a relevant Wondermark comic, but I couldn't remember the topic afterwards. So I just clicked the Random button over and over again in the hope I would eventually stumble on it.

And I did! Rejoice.

Hi Gemm!

I just got back from a 7 day Alaskan cruise. We had a wonderful time. I took 1,350 pictures and 24 videos. I brought to extra sets of batteries for my camera and still ended up having to buy two more. That's what happens when you take a guy who hasn't really traveled and lives in an area that's really flat and then send him to a place full of snow capped mountains.
I wasn't sure how I would do on a ship and the answer is "Just Fine". The only time I felt a little off was in the casino and moving to a window solved that quickly. I don't think I gained much if any weight. Yes, there was lots of food available and I did eat a little more than I would at home but we also did a lot of walking. I think it all worked out. I was sad to leave and even sadder to go back to work. There was enough happening on the ship and between talking to my gf, the scenery,  my Kindle, and my Nexus 7 I was never bored. The food was good to excellent. I enjoyed the service in the dining room but apparently I am not cut out to sit down for 2 hours or so for dinner.
It seemed odd to me that with about 1,900 passengers we kept running into the same few. We also spent a lot of time in the Crow's Nest looking at the view and listening to Matt the Solo Guitarist (that's how he was listed). He was pretty good especially at bantering with the customers. I now cannot get Sweet Caroline out of my head though. Both he and Ben the piano bar guy use iPads for song lists. We happened to be sitting at dinner with Ben and he said that without the iPad he knew maybe a couple of dozen songs but with it he could play hundreds. The wonders of modern technology!
I would definitely do another Alaskan cruise and fortunately so would my gf. :) It's going to be awhile though since we need to rebuild our funds.

We did go to Sitka and did a shore excursion there. We went on something called a wildlife quest with Allen Marine Tours and saw bunches of sea otters, bald eagles, and a humpback whale. After that we were taken to Fortress of the Bear and saw some bears which isn't too surprising given the name. We thoroughly enjoyed both. We didn't enjoy the ride in the tender back to the ship. Fun Fact: those orange lifeboats you see on the side of cruise ships? They hold 120 people when used as a tender. It's a tad cramped.
We didn't get a chance to go into Sitka and do anything else like shop or set fires. The next cruise we're looking at doesn't include Sitka as a port so I don't think we'll be able to help you. Could you remind me of why you want Sitka destroyed or should I search the forum?

I will hand it to you, the place is absolutely picturesque. Fortress of the Bear is a cool place, I guess it used to be a Navy armory and now they do rehabilitation for injured wild bears, orphaned cubs, etc. There's plenty of cool shit to do there as a tourist. You see the Russian Orthodox cathedral?

I've spent the past four days looking at an ever gloomier news feed on facebook that is detailing the atrocities happening in Turkey at the moment. I've been trying to reach all of my friends and family that I know to be living in Turkey right now to know how they are doing. My family says they are fine. Of the friends I've been able to reach, I've asked to update me if they were planning to take part in the protests. Of the two who did, only one wrote back that she is safe. I've been unable to reach the other.

My friends are berating me for keeping quiet about the protests and to raise awareness through channels like Twitter and Facebook. While initially actively reposting relevant and graphic posts that I could find, I have since deleted those posts, because my mother is afraid that I might get prosecuted (which has happened in Turkish history not forty years ago, with people tortured and murdered because they were opposing the military junta at the time). So I'm being forced into doing nothing by my mother, and being berated by my friends for doing nothing.

On top of that, my forehead decided that now is the best time to flare up my chronic sinusitis, which makes my head feel like a melon about to burst. I've been trying to be distracted by going out with friends and going to the cinema. Tonight, I have run out of painkillers. My eyes feel like they might pop out of their sockets any minute.

We did not visit the Russian Orthodox cathedral. By the time we got back from the Fortress of the Bear it was getting close to All Aboard* so we just did some shopping and headed back.

Damn, Masterpiece that is tough. I'm not sure what I'd do in your shoes. Okay, I'm pretty certain I'd listen to my mother.

*Close in this case meant a couple of hours. I am a tad anxious about being late under normal conditions, the idea of actually missing the ship kinda magnified that.

I agree, in some ways.  If I were you, and in country, I'm sure I'd want to join in protesting (whether I would actually do so is another matter).  Being out of the country, though, the best thing you can do is raise awareness and support your friends.  But if raising awareness publicly will get you into trouble (even with family), it's not worth it - do it privately, as you are with us.

And can you make contact with any family members of your absent friend?  With luck, they're safe and just unable to communicate for some reason.

Good luck, stay strong, and for god's sake, get some antibiotics for the sinuses.  Pain emphasizes panic and depression, and that's the last thing you need right now.

There are times when that's the wrong decision.  Remember, those sinuses are right next to your brain, and a rampant infection can eat through bone.
