Calling it here: Marten in a little boy-shorts formal outfit holding a ring sewn onto a pillow.

With blue hair.

#yagottahavebluehair #hashtagsdontworkontheforum

Even if it's not in the comic it'd be a great print for a con.

Marigold would love that, perhaps a little to much even.

  • but will you understand

Just got done reading Page 3 of this thread...

I don't get how a couple of you came to such wildly different conclusions than I did, I admit. Marten's had the invitation for, if my experience is any indication, a month (minimum), unopened and forgotten. Time to hopefully put away money towards transportation, ask for time off, etc. Because he slacked and dropped the ball (something I'm guilty of sometimes), he's just about out of time, and so has to ask for help. His father is annoyed, but will pay (or loan).

Or am I missing something here?

Is it cold in here?

You'd think his dad would have told him, rather then sending him a card in the first place, as someone mentioned here... with Marten being his son and all. This is starting to sound like so many other web comic parent-son relationships that I've seen and heard so much about.

My dad didn't tell me he had been in the hospital until weeks afterward.

When he was down in Arizona, and I was all the way up here in Wisconsin.

Comic!

....aaaaaaand there goes our top three guesses right out the window.

That leaves Tai, Emily and Claire.

Tai prolly won't want to leave because of Dora.

Emily will have some crazy excuse.

Guess who's going to be invited to go to his dad's wedding.

This means Dora can't be flower girl!

Hannelore could wear her containment suit on the plane.

Momo would probably enjoy the chance to add to her social protocol database but she would attract gossip if there as a date.

Since he's OK with taking a Justafriend, why not Marigold?

Not sure what the QCworld etiquette would be about this, but AnthroPCs can be shut down (we've seen both winslow and pintsize do it) so could momo go in the cargo hold?

Or maybe ship her big body as luggage and let Marigold "carry her on" as an infant?

Yep, I was not at all surprised Dora begged off due to business responsibilities, she's essentially married to CoD. Also not surprised that Faye preferred doing couple things with Angus. Hannelore's reasons for not going even make sense, the closed environment of an airliner does make disease transmission quite easy (assuming the disease can be transmitted through the air, that is). They could always drive I suppose, but it'll be a long trip down to Miami, a couple days even they drive nonstop (and assuming either Marten or Hannelore CAN drive)

If Marten does end up having to take Claire, that could be an uncomfortable but hilarious trip.

I'm still thinking Hanners.  She has a tendency to overcome her fears.  Not to mention that she has easy access to private crafts, if it really came to that ...

Marigold would be another good option.  And yes, she could bring Momo.  Airliner restrictions could even be an opportunity to bring back the old chassis for a weekend.  8-)

Feral hogs are a real problem.  And since they're an invasive agricultural pest, conventional hunting laws don't always apply.

Someone once told me bringing a date to a wedding is like bringing a deer carcass to a hunting trip.  I think it was Vince Vaughn.  Considering the women at said wedding may be relatives I'm inclined to have qualms with that advice.

Feral hogs are reportedly tough opponents in a fight.

I won't confuse them with commercial airliners, though, not until pigs fly.

Oh no. A Terrible Idea just struck. Who says the +1 has to be female?

Imagine if Marten shows up at the wedding bringing Pintsize.

I don't think Marten wants to bring any of the interns.  Sooner he'd bring Sam.

I don't think Steve would go, leaving Cosette behind.  Amir, perhaps can spare a weekend ...

Or hey, Raven might be up for a bit of randomness ... if Marten dares inflict her on his father's wedding.  8-)

Is Claire really taking over the role of Marten's opposite-sex snarky dialogue partner, that is, the Faye role?
Or is Jeph just on a Claire kick?
Either way, it could be Claire. But she's an intern, and it feels "too soon" in their friendship to me, and I don't think Marten should try and use her as ersatz Faye.

The pacing of the comic seems to indicate Claire, but I'm really hoping for Emily, because I prefer her awesomeness and potential for comedy, compared to the "let's explore gender issues" that we get with Claire.  Not that it's a horrible thing; it's just not my cup of tea.

I don't think Marten's necessarily TRYING to use her as anything. It's not as if he's recently had a falling out with Real Faye and needs a Replacement Faye to get by. :P
Jeph's probably just taking the time to develop her character a little bit more.

Re: New comic, I know that the forums do Wild Mass Guessing (TM) all the time, but when it comes time for FAYE to make presumptions of this sort, she's very often completely correct (see: Marten/Dora, Marten/Padma, Dora/Jim).
Though honestly, I wouldn't like it so much if Marten arbitrarily met somebody at the wedding.

I miss Raven. She'd be a good choice.

If we see the wedding we'll see Martenmom again. Her dynamics with the new characters: well, in the old days, IBM manuals would warn that doing certain things "may produce unpredictable results".

I'm thinking Marten will bring Emily. And conveniently forgetting to tell her that it's a gay wedding, which will cause some interesting (i.e. funny) moments.

Claire is another possibility though that storyline would probably be quite different from anything with Emily. More serious for a start, more reflecting over life as gay and/or trans etc.

It's also possible that he may chose Marigold (and Momo), but she would more or less play the same role as Emily, comic relief, and AFAIK Marigold should know that Martendad is gay, which takes away a prime piece of comic real estate.

I haven't seen any "let's explore gender issues" stuff with Claire outside of the arc where she came out as trans* to Marten. I've just seen her be the same snarky, tightly-wound character she was when she was introduced with no new plot interest in her gender identity.

Now, be fair – while these things "aren't there" in the comic, they've certainly "been here" in the forum.

I don't blame anyone who reads the forum for holding the idea that we're getting "let's explore gender issues" with Claire.

(The comic has handled it in a nice, calm way, rather low tone perhaps.  The forum was, for a while, a train crash, and could easily revert to that form.)

If this was real-life rather than QC.... Claire goes with Marten, recognises Maurice as her father* (who she rather despises). He doesn't recognise her though, as he's unaware of her transition.

But such improbabilities only happen in reality, they're far too implausible to use in a comic strip.

So I'm going for.... Sven. Outside chance, Marigold.

I was going to say almost exactly this - yes, the forum did see a lot of discussion on the subject and in fact it's ongoing in the DISCUSS section, but Jeph can't really be held accountable for how much we talk about certain topics.

That said, I'd like to see Momo going with Marten. I think it'd be an interesting window into the way QC world handles anthroPCs - for example, I wonder how airport security screening works when you are full of the things that the scans find suspicious?
