LOVED Claire calling Marten "Cicero". A very apt sarcastic comparison. ;D

Mind you, scaring off bullies (like Verres, for those of you who know your Cicero) with words isn't really Marten's style.
What IS his style for scaring off bullies?
... Sadly, probably the "Steve Rogers pre-Captain-America" method. :P

There is no "Claire the Intern" after The Wedding.
This is true. Gotta be honest, I didn't expect Claire to be the intern to make the leap from intern to main cast, but it looks like she has.

So it's um......erm....uh....that other chick's turn after this arc? Like that one daughter in Downton Abbey. Um.....er.......Ethel? Elizabeth?

Gabby? Probably not. I mean, she and Emily will still show up, but they'll probably be side characters, maybe Steve/Cosette level or so.

Yep, the old "face to the fists" method (victim's face to bullies' fists) - applied repeatedly. As to the "speech", well, Marten could really use a Toastmasters course. Their "Impromptu" speech section deals with having to make a speech on short notice.

There's another "impromptu" method that tends to work well...at least for some people. It's called "alcohol." ;D

Cicero is widely misquoted, by the way. He was actually exclaiming with delight when a Japanese restaurant served him batter-fried eels.

I instantly thought that as well.

Anyway, Marten should have really prepared a speech. Maybe not prepared in full, but something to say. I mean he could have expected people wanted him to speak, him being the presumably closest blood relative. Unless the unnamed uncle is Henry's brother.

His speech could have been worse.

Sadly, Marten, I know the feeling. Public speaking, polite conversation... although witty banter does still function sometimes.

And, from before, I'm a comparative young-un. June of '83.

Redball and I will join you.

I have to ask though - what is our age order here in the forums? October of 1967 here (and old enough to be some-o yo's daddies).

EDIT: Though I'm not old enough to be Jeph's daddy, thankfully.

Agree on Claire looking very sharp in that last panel. I like it. (Generally like that look on women.)
Agree on Claire no longer being "just an intern at Marten's workplace" after this arc. (except when Jeph pulls a Willis and kills her off slightly.)

Damn fine strip today. Although if Marten EVER wants to go on stage and not make a mumbling ass of himself he should learn how to publicly improvise. Jeeez, son, you're not 16 anymore. °O

I recently gave a speech on a few hours notice, with visuals. I heard quacking and babbling in a voice that sounded like mine but was told I did a fine job. I can only conclude most of the drinking was done before I got there.

[Snip]  By the end of this arc, she will have either agreed to go on a date with Marten or will have permanently and irrevocably earned her stripes in his circle of friends. [snip]

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Claire a trans? So far I'm not entirely sure what that means... for her...

If she has a [EXPUNGED] I don't think Marten would go for it.

She's oriented toward men, Marten realizes that it would be unethical to date an intern, and I have learned recently that it is extraordinarily rude to speculate about a real trans person's genitals. We have been invited to practice being polite with Claire even though she's fictional.

Marten is just the sort who would be potentially open-minded, though.

Probably not foreshadowing.

Subtle. ;)

It's not like transwomen date gay guys, though, so I wouldn't see it being a sure deal-breaker if he fancied her either way. I don't think it's really been explored how open he'd be to that, so we just don't know (and if Jeph goes in that direction then clearly he'd be fine with it). *Shrugs*

Probably not foreshadowing.

If only it was that simple, Marten..  :-P

It's pretty weird to see the assumptions people make about how humans work. I mean, it's not like those hormones are unique to us or anything.

Although, there are still other ways for a couple that is opposed to anal sex and incapable of having vaginal sex to have sexual intimacy...

I honestly doubt Marten would be open-minded enough for it, though. And, as Jeph's basically said he doesn't want to write that sort of conflict (I forget the exact wording), I doubt he'll do more than play with the ship.

Claire is indeed transsexual.  A Trans woman. A trans, not so much, that's an unfortunate turn of phrase that may reasonably be seen as dehumanising.
On the other hand, to criticise someone for saying that, unless it's done in the mildest, gentlest and most diplomatic terms, would be even worse.

Oddly, "a transgender" isn't seen as too bad, though again, "a transgender girl" is preferred. "A girl" is better still.

I fail to see how the core tenet applies. What sort of barbarian do you take her for?

And I can't say how much time has passed in-universe, but that was written ten years ago (I was still a pre-teen).  :psyduck:

Yeah, I elected to not include a bit on it. It's really more of a grammatical thing. It's an adjective, so it's either "X is black" or "X is a black person", whilst people would look oddly at "X is a black". Just took it as a quirk of typing.
