Hunh! I'll turn 76 in June.
The last time my age was overstated was at my 49th birthday. My wife invited people to a birthday party and advertised it as my 50th. I wasn't actually all that bothered by that, but then on my 50th, she and our daughter went down to visit my in-laws in Tennessee. That hurt! And my daughter told me recently my wife went out of town deliberately.

A double surprise! Does...does she hate surprises or something? I don't see how that could make someone mad, much less "so pissed she couldn't talk for 20 minutes" and holding a grudge about it decades later.

I truly set her up to believe an ordinary party at home was ahead. No one showed. They were all elsewhere. She had a hard time dealing with it, and over the years, I simply accepted that.
Getback was celebrating 50th on my 49th, which was sort of a fail for her, so the next year was her next best thing.
We had a good 40-plus years, and that just added some texture to a good marriage, better than I ever expected given my parents' marriage and my first one. I'm a widower. I'd like to try it again, but I guess I'd skip the surprises.

Oh! I thought them all being at the pizza place was stage 2 of the surprise party! That is, she expected a surprise party, so you took her to a mostly empty house to get her guard down, then bring her to everywhere else, I didn't realize they just didn't show up. That's kind of shitty of them.

Naw, I wasn't clear. You got the right idea. Just two couples showed up at the house, the place she expected, so she was led to believe the party was a flop. The pizza place indeed was stage 2.

To be honest, I would be pissed too if I was her; but I hate surprise parties and April Fool's when they hurt people in the process (which they mostly do). But I wouldn't be butthurt about it decades later.

I am, however, still butthurt about that one time when my mother went out to party with her boyfriend of the month on Christmas of ... woha, 2008, telling me in advance that she might call me to come to the party later. She never called; what's worse, my PC was broken at that time, and I wasn't invited anywhere else. I ended up walking for half an hour through the streets, meeting a generous estimate of five people in the process, going into an Internet cafe to chat and giving out my phone number to the girl that would become my first girlfriend and my later ex.

Looking back on that small wall of text, saying that I am "butthurt" doesn't quite cover it.

If she'd invited you, you wouldn't have met your first girlfriend. I'd almost think that'd make you glad you weren't invited.

Thanks for your kind words, but:

a) I had known her for quite a long at that point; we might have ended up together anyway, just not "starting" on that same day.
b) I feel I could have been happier without that relationship in the first place.

a. Oh. I guess I misunderstood your story, it made it sound like you met five people (as in, met for the first time) and one of those was the girl who became your first girlfriend.
b. My first girlfriend was with me for only a couple weeks and it was a disaster, but I'm glad it happened, because it taught me a lot about what I didn't want in a relationship. Not saying that's necessarily true in your case, just a thought.

Oh, no, sorry. I meant that the streets were empty, because everyone was somewhere celebrating, so I ran into a ridiculously low number of people at all. I then went to chat with my long-time friends; one of them had expressed interest in me the days before/on that day, so I ended up giving out my phone number to her, which I normally don't do to "Internet people".

And somehow, I've just never actually bothered with the first significant other thing. Seems like a waste of time.  :psyduck:

My first girlfriend wasn't significant. Hell, my current girlfriend is probably my first actual significant other. I'd have to disagree about them being a waste of time.

In my case, it's probably just because I'm far too much of a cynical bastard. (And my previous attempts at entering relationships have blown up spectacularly.) I value my mental health too much to try again.

I suppose my third girlfriend was my first significant other, statistically or otherwise. Coincidentally she was also my first girlfriend out of high school.

For a statistically significant other, the time required to be statistically significant would obviously go up as your life continues, and have to be compared to all past relationships right?

I am confused. I thought you guys are from Erlangen, Germany? Why is there a UK-URL on the poster in the background?

19-24 seems to be our primary demographic, what's more commonly known in the US as being "college age".

Oh, I totally missed that second bit. I'd still be within that 19-24 bracket of course.

That suddenly I'm not. Just because I don't live in Erlangen (that really feels like it came out of the blue) doesn't mean I'm not German.

Ich kann auch gerne mit euch Deutsch sprechen Loki und mtmerrick, aber ich fürchte dass es Kommunikationsschwierigkeiten geben wird.

Primo, to clear up this misunderstanding: I live in Beer City Munich. That picture was taken when I was visiting the Welshman in Swansea, Wales. We (that includes Daf, the other guy in the picture and Ann, who took the picture) met online and decided to meet up. I had forgotten this picture even existed because I hid them after a falling out with both Daf and Ann. But that story is too long to share it here, maybe some other time in the relationship advice thread.
