Should a character adopt a dog?
« on: 25 Apr 2013, 08:40 »

Jeph, you have a dog. You know dogs - they do funny things. How about having a QC character adopt a dog? Faye would be a good bet.

Just throwin' that out there.

I thought The Pugnacious Peach was the type to be a dog person but Jeph said once that if she had a pet it would be a cat.

Most of them are in apartments, which makes dogs more difficult.

Make it really interesting: have an AnthroPC adopt a dog.

Yes. Momo should adopt an annoying yappy rat-dog and call it Pintsize.

How would a dog react to something that didn't smell alive taking care of it?

That's an interesting question. Maybe there is merchandise to make AnthroPCs... smell alive?

I forgot to say: There is someone else the main cast already adopted.

Also, Hannermom has at least one whale shark. Possibly piranhas by now too.

It's the cats and dogs that are strangers to one another that don't get along.  If someone with a cat gets a young enough dog (puppy!), it will learn that the cat is (the boss and) not a toy, and the cat will learn that the dog is no danger, and they'll work out.

Usually.

Anyway, I'm content to let Jephzibah write the comic.  And I note that Shebly has already appeared.  8-)

Or the cat decides that he actually LIKES getting dragged around by a dog that only grew up to twice his size, and will happily just sit there while he's getting dragged all over the house. As my mom found out when she got a miniature Australian shepherd, that stopped growing right at the toy/mini line.

I think bottom right is Roswell, their newest family member adopted when he went to New Mexico:
https://twitter.com/jephjacques/status/322139005774880768/photo/1

The rest of them might be dogs belonging to other members of the Western MA comics collective (Jeff Rowland, Holly Post, rstevens, KC Greene, Andrew Hussie, etc) or just neighbors?

I figured that was a corgi, but the build fits.

Now I'm wondering if androids became a real thing, would a dog care? Would it treat it like part of the pack? Ignore it because it doesn't smell or feel alive? Giant chew toy?

I'm thinking there would be an adjustment process there. Look at how animals tend to react when confronted with moving toys, or roombas or things. First they freak out. Then they chase it around, eventually it becomes 'toy' or 'eh, ignore it'.  Depending on the AnthroPC chassis they might be able to go from 'toy' to 'alpha pack member'. Someone with a chassis like Momo's could physically dominate a dog enough to get respect. But could you imagine say Pintsize with a big dog like a German Shepard? Chew toy might be the best he could hope for in status... They'd probably have to keep finding and digging Pintsize up after the dog buries him.

Probably not at all; as far as I know, most dogs are rather short-sighted. Also, I am not sure if a dog even sees a hologram the way we do; remember, their color perception is different.

Well, they can see television and computer screens. Though they don't seem to pay much attention to the sights as much as the sounds. But you've seen videos of cats and dogs trying to catch an animal on screen.

Sometimes the smaller dog in a pair can be alpha, so a small AnthroPC could conceivably do the same.

Not entirely true. I got adopted by a dog once. And in an amazing non-coincidence, the dog's owner is now my wife.

The dog, alas, died a few years ago.

What Zebediah said. Dogs are expert, tnough, at letting us two-legs think we're in charge. I'm pretty sure my dog spent a great deal of time wondering how smart I was.
For an entertaining take on the subject, look up "Into Your Tent I'll Creep," by Eric Frank Russell.

I forget the title but there's an Arthur Clarke story where the sole telepath on the alien ship makes contact with the minds of the dominant life form on Earth, reading their thoughts about how to manipulate humans by flattery and puppy dog eyes.
