As far as I can see the Mumble-Server is now back up and running. Sadly still not in the current release (1.2.4), so we're missing out on the brand new Ogg Opus codec (which I'm totally excited about), but at least I'm not running the completely outdated 1.2.2 anymore.

The upgrade has broken some other software on the server I used a lot, but everything else works.

Because I'm currently moving everything from the old server (which was a small PC at my home) to a new virtual server at a big Provider. Should give a better ping for everyone (except me).

Alright, it should work now. I've got no way of testing it right now (I'm not at home currently), but I don't see why it shouldn't.

It has been for a while.

You might have experienced some downtime today. Sorry for that. I actually had forgotten to install fail2ban on the server, so it was flooded with automated brute force SSH login attempts.

flooded with automated brute force SSH login attempts.

What attracts them?  I mean, I've been running SSH servers for years at home and at work, on the default port, and I get constant login attempts of course - but never to the level that they impact performance or make me think "DoS".

I don't know. It was multiple servers with multiple tries per second. Maybe it was DoSing because of something else. I found some strange log entries which could point to hardware failure at the provider. (apparently the server rebooted twice) Anyway, as soon as I had installed fail2ban most of the login attempts were blocked and the server has been running stable since.

Why didn't anybody tell me that there was a certificate warning when joining the server? I just fixed the permission problem that caused it.

Anyway, anybody up for Mumble this evening? I don't have anything else to do.

I'm tired, because I had to get up at 05:30 am for my driving exam.

BTW, just got a cert error trying to connect, saying that it's self-signed and untrusted.

Details on the cert (leaving out blank fields):

Hmm. Strange. The certificate is not selfsigned, and should be trusted. The certificate chain seems to be intact as well.

Which OS are you using? Does it have a central root certificate storage? I'm using a certificate issued by the CAcert, and their root certificates aren't included in all operating systems.

Edit: Should be gone now. Please tell me if it still appears.

Using OS X, and it appears that CAcert isn't very widely trusted at all.

The error only appeared once, and then didn't reappear (I think it was just a one-time error, that the Mumble client suppresses after that.)

In the UK that post was at 2:30pm - pretty much the least likely time for people to be passing time at their computers, I should think (for instance, I was just between travelling back from singing at a wedding, and going on to plant a flowerbed in a house we let).

When I'm online (note: I'm currently in Karlsruhe, so I won't be online until at least tuesday) I usually join about 9pm local time (UTC+02:00 currently (CEST)) and leave, well, when everybody else leaves. That might be by midnight, but that might be 4am as well.

Part of my issue with checking into Mumble is sometimes I'm just curious if anyone is online but not necessarily in a chatty mood and it's bad form to pop in and out without saying anything.
