Good luck either way. It's frustrating, but stretching back up to your proper size tends to be much much easier, thankfully.

I have like no money but these were being sold used on the Facebook jewelry exchange group and I bought them and I cannot fucking wait to get them.

I still have not tried to put any plugs in. Lefty is definitely way smaller than righty. But yeah I've always had an easier time stretching back up, so hopefully it won't take a crazy long time.

Wait, so those are plugs?  Could you hang other dangly things from the holes?

Or are they basically earrings, and the lobe goes through the slot and they dangle?

They're very pretty, either way...

They're earrings. Though they'd be beautiful as plugs.

Ebony wood, 30 grams per earring. I just have to get my ears back to 1/2" and I can wear them. Both are currently at 00g, just need to figure out what I can wear next.

also what defines a body mod? i have a lot of plans for things i want to do with my body, and some of them aren't what people would think of when they hear the words 'body mod' but they're still important to me - one being losing a lot of weight, the other being bleaching my skin.

no, i'm not approaching either of these things lightly. i'm aware of the dangers and i'm trying to work out how to minimise them as best as i can, but the fact still remains that my ultimate desire is to look unhuman - too tall, too pale, too skinny, too androgynous.

so would my desire to lose weight so as to gain a gaunt, unsettling appearance be considered a form of body modification or not? would bleaching my skin to become unnaturally pale?

and if so, then where is the line drawn - would exercises that shape or tone your body be considered a form of body modification at well? they change the way you look, but it doesn't seem right to lump them in with body mods.

I would consider them all forms of body modification, up to and including something as simple as hair coloring and shaping your nails. If its something done willingly with absolute consent and for no necessary medical reason (though even this can have exceptions), its a body mod as far as I'm concerned, even if I wouldn't call it such in normal conversation. The only reason there is any real difference between much of it is due to social taboos and class issues.

Basically, it's much like the difference between 'vanilla' sex and kink. It's a rather thin and blurry line that may not actually exist in any meaningful way.

I think it has to do with the "socially acceptable" thing again.  I mean, look at bodybuilders - if that's not modding, what is?

And the "acceptable" ones - breast implants, plastic surgery, ear piercings - none are really more extreme than a lot of what's considered more "extreme" modding, it's just a matter of where you put the implants, what effect the surgery has on how you look, the number and size of the piercings...

Of course, the goal of a lot of the socially acceptable ones is just to look "more natural" (often a target that gets missed, though).

And really, things like tattoos and piercings are becoming more common / socially acceptable every year.

Well, on the spectrum of Body Modification I'd actually place professional body building and plastic surgery pretty damn high in comparison to even some of the comparable BM things. The amount of risk associated with plastic surgery and the amount of sheer dedication required for bodybuilding are insanely high when compared to a large majority of extreme BM.

But I do suspect a majority of folks would have the spectrum weighted towards social acceptability (aka weirdness) being the more extreme end. This would make things that make you look less 'human' be much more extreme despite the usually much lower risks and healing associated with it. Part of this is because medical doctors won't do many of the procedures, making people think they're much riskier than they actually are. Of course this doesn't keep plastic surgery addicts who don't look entirely human anymore, despite (or in some cases such as the human Ken doll, because of) their intentions, from being put into the 'weird' category.

It's actually not cartilage, assuming your septum was pierced in the same spot as most. There is a "sweet spot" near the bottom of that part that is just skin.

Checked, it is right on the border of the cartilage,  actually touching it. Which explains why it still hurts to bump my nose even though I've had this for over 3 years.

I think the difference is that yours is through the cartilage and will feel like any other cartilage piercing, and ours are just near the cartilage, so when they're bumped the jewelry hits the cartilage and hurts.

Not to attack anybody's taste, but I never got what the appeal of tunnels (are they called tunnels? I'm just gonna keep calling them that until someone corrects me...) is. I can appreciate most piercings and am a big fan of tattoos anyway, but I just don't like tunnels. Whenever I see them I have to imagine what the ear would look like without the plugs and it creeps me out. :psyduck:

Tunnels I think refer specifically to plugs that with a hole in the center, while you seem to be bothered by large plugs in general.

I think they're called gauges?  The name comes from the sizing system, also used for wire and a few other things.

And upon checking, they're also called flesh tunnels, which sounds creepy.

Yeah, tunnels (technically the proper term is eyelets) are things like this:

Plugs are solid, like this:

Gauges is definitely a common slang term for plugs and eyelets, but it's a term that's not well thought of by a lot of the community.

Randomly thought a nerdy idea for a tattoo (but not one I'd ever get). The tattoo would be 127.0.0.1 and it would be on the chest. "Home is where the heart is", after all.

Thanks for the correction.
Back to my question though. What's the appeal of gauges? What exactly do you like about them?
Obviously my viewpoint is biased with me not liking how they look, but I'd still like to understand why one chose to get that particular body mod.

MoM: I like that one. Another idea (with less deeper meaning) I was thinking about for a long time is 101010 - the binary code for 42.

I like having larger holes in my ear. For one, I like how it looks*. Second, I am allergic to nickel and most metal jewelry irritates my piercings. (I had major infections when I had my ears pierced when I was little, to the point I had to just let them close up. I got them re-pierced at a 10g a few years ago.) Having larger piercings allows me to wear organic materials (glass, stone, and wood), which you can't with the normal piercing size. So mostly it's a thing of convenience so I can wear jewelry I want to wear. I am currently at a 4g and plan on staying there because I've got lots of options when it comes to jewelry. Also at this size, most people can't even tell my piercings are gauged, unless I'm wearing hanging styles.

*I tend to favor gauges below 00 only because I just think they look better aesthetically. But that doesn't mean I don't envy the beauty of the jewelry that the largest sizes have, because I do.

The term you're looking for is 'stretched ears'. Tunnels, plugs, eyelets, etc refer to the jewelry worn in stretched ears. And gauges, while a common term for sure, is incorrect - it's like calling them inches or millimeters. It's the system of measurement used to determine the size, that's all. Plus, after 00g (3/8" diameter, I think?), we no longer use the gauge system.

My ears are currently at 7/8" diameter. I'll be stretching back to 1" soon, and hopefully moving on to 1 1/2" eventually. I absolutely love how they look. I like that I can wear a ton of beautiful and interesting jewelry. I like that the bottom of my ear is closer to the size of the top of my ear - it's a balance/symmetry thing for me. Those are the only reasons I can really quantify.

Every other piercing I have gets caught more than any of my four stretched earlobe piercings. Sure, they get caught. And sometimes that can have disastrous consequences. But it's pretty rare, if you're careful of yourself and your surroundings. For example, I always warn anyone cutting my hair that I have piercings. I also wear solid plugs to get my hair cut. It's pretty damn unlikely that anything would happen, but I prefer to be prepared.

My lip piercing, when I had it, got caught all the fucking time. It was stretched as well, but not much.

Honestly, 'traditional' earrings are more likely to get caught or tear.  This is sometimes called the "cheese wire effect"  when you have large dangling earrings hanging from a  18 or 20 gauge wire, the force of the earring getting caught on things can actually allow it to slowly (or in sever cases quickly) cut through your lobe.  In a stretchered piercing the force is spread out and so a tear is much less likely.

Oh, and since it was brought up, healthy lobes don't look bad when naked. Of course, if the idea of a hole in the body gives you the heebie jeebies then it doesn't really matter if they look healthy or not. My ears are a little dry and flaky because they're fresh out of the shower, dried and pre-oiled.

Mine are not so pretty, since I stretched them way too far when I had no idea what I was doing. But I'm hoping to get the blow-outs scalpelled off, along with some of the worst of the scar tissue. Then I can have pretty lobes that stretch on their own again.

I gotta admit, that doesn't look nearly as bad as I imagined it. In my mind they always were kinda dangling there, if you know what I mean. I didn't think they would keep their shape after the plugs were taken out.

They definitely do once you get past a certain point. I'm at 1 1/8" (27mm).

This is Shannon Larrat. He stopped wearing jewelry in his 2" lobes a few years before he died because he liked the naked lobes.

And then there's Bear. Bear's ears are just ridiculous and he's got the largest stretched lobes in the world. He's gotten back up to 5 1/2" last I checked and he has no plans to stop. None of these are super recent, but they show them off pretty well.
