This is the sort of thing that I would be okay with using a disinfectant for. Touching lots of other people's hands. Though I rarely touch other people, which is on purpose cause ew germs and ew people.

I think it is easier to touch your own face less than to wash/disinfect your hands more.  When I work retail in particular, I'm going to touch floors and people and all sorts of gross surfaces, instead of constantly disinfecting, I just make sure to wash my hands before I eat.  If you shower once a day, use the bathroom at least twice (I've an iron bladder), and eat three time, you are already washing your hands at least 6 times a day... unless they are actually getting dirty, like, (you touched raw meat, or poop, or you picked up dirty tissues) or you have some need to keep touching your mouth/face (like you have itchy eyes, or bite your nails), it seems like 6+ times a day of washing your hands is probably enough.

I don't get sick any more frequently than the average person, so I think my system works just fine?

I don't use disinfectant after every person I touch, just before I touch my face/food/etc after touching another person or something I deem gross. But I also have some obsessive compulsive tendencies that I cant really shake that tell me to do it more often. I try to negate that by using non-antibacterial soap when I have to wash my hands a lot.

Also: I have seen someone at work use the clearly marked no-water-needed hand sanitizer to wash her hands in the sink. I don't get it.

I realise my evidence is anecdotal, but I only wash my hands when they feel exceptionally dirty, after I've cleaned up something nasty in the kitchen or the bathroom, but that's maybe once a week. I shower way more often than I wash my hands, and I haven't had any illness other than the common cold in years. (Other than that idiopathic sudden deafness thing, but what are the odds that not washing your hands makes you deaf?) Modern society does a good enough job of eliminating pathogens already, it's not like I have to worry about contracting cholera any more.

I'm gonna say "gross" if you are admitting you don't wash your hands after taking a shit.  A lot of hand washing is to keep others from getting sick, for instance, washing your hands after you use the bathroom...  it's one of the things you ought to be doing because you are part of a society and your practices effect the health of others.  Like getting vaccinated.

Oh yes, I forgot about public (and other people's) bathrooms. I do wash my hands coming out of those, mostly because I'm expected to. I don't think it really makes any difference, because most of us aren't doing anything that would make our excreted gut bacteria end up outside of the bathroom, are we?

Excreted gut bacteria are as harmless as they come.  There are better reasons for washing your hands at that stage.

If it gets on your hands and you promptly down a sandwich without wearing plastic gloves, yeah, it IS going to "do something" outside of the bathroom. That's why I wash my hands after using the bathroom.

I am pretty sure that someone not washing their hands after going to the toilet would be a deal-breaker with me for relationships or living together. It's incredibly unhygenic and really, WHY would you not wash your hands? Exactly how hard is it to run some water, rub your hands together with some soap and rinse them? Even if you're not doing a 20 second hospital clean, at least make a bit of an effort.

To be honest, until a few years ago I was similar. Maybe not that much, but a little bit.

Now I'm washing my hands more and more. I don't like the feeling of unwashed hands. Especially in the summer, I always wash my hands, as they get sweaty very easily. Sometimes I come from the toilet, washed my hands, work on my computer for an hour, and then wash my hands again, as my hands became almost sticky. Also I like to keep my keyboards clean. And my trackball doesn't work too great with dirty hands. And then there is the trouble I have with having food stuff on my hands. There are times, when I have two slices of bread for breakfast, and that makes me wash my hands thrice. Once before sitting down, once after eating the first slice of bread (as I often have Prosciutto for breakfast), and once after eating the second slice.

Basically cloth toilet paper. I like the idea, but it's tough to keep up with. I tried it for a bit, but only for pee. Number 2 got regular toilet paper and all was as usual. It's a lot of laundry, but in theory, especially with a house full of women, it could save a lot of money.

I still use cloth pads though, and I love them.

It's different for guys, since you would only need it for poo. The idea is to save trees and be good for the environment and so on. But there are some amenities I will not give up, and a clean butt and poo-free laundry are two of them.

Wait hang on, do guys not ever need to wipe their penis after urinating? Surely there are sometimes drops of urine still left? I am flabbergasted at how fast my brother and I got through toilet paper when we shared a bathroom if he wasn't using it after urinating - I'm sure he used more than me!

Almost every guy I know does not dab - use toilet paper - after peeing. I only know one guy that does and it's usually only a square or two.

I need to, but that's because I have a piercing that passes through the urethra. If I don't there's a good chance I'll just look like I pissed myself due to the amount of dribble that will leak out of the piercing.

pretty much and sometimes.  Usually I tap mine with my hand and flex my urethra muscles.  After that I am done.  No urine is ever on the outside of the head.

As for your brother well, thats a question you would have to take up with him.

this thread is creeping into the TMI thread haha.

I didn't quantify the amount of toilet paper we were using, to be fair. And I'm well aware that men use toilet paper to clean up after other things too - but my brother was pre-pubescent nearly all of the time that we shared a bathroom.

Annnnyway, pointless stuff!

hehe I used to do this in college.  I don't rightly know why.

It's called token compliance.  It's because you (like automatic brain processes you, not necessarily rational thinking you) want to collect the social benifits of complying with a norm without the cost of actually complying with it. Passing one's hands quickly under running water, or even just turning on the water is a common example.  another really common one is patting one's pockets an then refusing change to a homeless person, regardless of whether your pockets contain money.

Deal with lots of homeless people here in DC.  I usually ignore them or tell them I got nothing for them.  Most (not all) homeless people I encounter are professional bums and not "on hard times" bums.

good cosplay prank.
