My favorites are not from widely renown bands or artists, but renown in the YouTube community. Two of my favorites:

Birdy- Skinny Love (Bon Iver)
Drew Tabor- Born to Die (Lana del Rey)

Not a big Linkin Park fan, but I do really enjoy this cover of Adele's Rolling in the Deep.

In the category of "covers that are better than the original," Johnny Cash - Hurt.

I completely agree with the Johnny Cash cover. Infinitely better than the original. Also, wow, I didn't know Linkin Park did an Adele cover. I quite like it.

Love this cover, and the original, but especially the cover.

When I saw Jonathan Coulton live, he and Paul and Storm performed Birdhouse In Your Soul by They Might Be Giants and that memory fills me with lots of happy.

You guys, I just realized something...

...I'm a Cylon!

I think I should have linked WOTE's version of Payphone instead of Trouble.  Way better.  They get points for rewriting the terrible rap bridge, too.

Is it just me, or is "take terrible songs and make them awesome" WOTE's, like, thing?

So, I liked this when I first heard it just because, you know, Mountain Goats.  But then I listened to the original, and the lyric changes make it even more awesome/hilarious.  Favorite change:

Like killing cops
And reading Kerouac.

Posted this in a relevant but wrong thread last night.

Sally's Song performed by Amy Lee. There's a few pretty covers of that song but this is the one I usually find myself listening to semi-regularly.

Anyone heard of the Norwegian glam/hard rock band Wig Wam? They were on Eurovision a few years back. Anyways, they have a really great cover of "Turn to You" by Melanie C.

Wow, this is fantastic.  Gonna go snoop on this band now.

-----

I can't stop listening to this Wrecking Ball cover.

Also, I only found out recently that this was a cover.  I looked up the original, and it's okay, but no better than that.  Which was really disappointing, because I fucking love The Field Mice, and hoped the dude's other band would impress me just as much, but I really think the Mountain Goats version is better.

Those are all pretty great.  As for each one:

1.  Haha, I apparently never actually knew the lyrics to Kids.

2.  The dude with long hair in the Ukelele Orchestra looks like Bob from Twin Peaks and it's freaking me out.

3.  Julia Nunes has a really nice-sounding over-enunciation thing going on with her voice, in addition to ukeleles being awesome.

Nothing beats Hellsong's super cheerful cover of Symphony of Destruction, with the possible exception of Paranoid, which comes off so natural, especially with the video I linked to.

But I can't mention Hellsongs without bringing up The Cardigans' Sabbath Bloody Sabbath!

Shiner's cover of "Feel Like Makin' Love" is awesome.  When you listen to it, it doesn't seem like it bears any relation to the original, but the original actually has some bizarre guitar and bass work in it.  -

I can think of several. Off the top of my head and in no particular order:
"Macarthur Park" (The Negro Problem)
"Come as You Are" (Caetano Veloso)
"Friend of the Devil" (Lyle Lovett)
"Everybody's Happy Nowadays" (Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine)
"Oops I Did It Again" (Richard Thompson)
"Supernaut" (Black Box version, 1,000 Homo DJs w/Trent Reznor)
"Tiempo Sin Respuesta" (Pedro Aznar, cover of Nick Drake's "Time of No Reply")

And I'll second (or third, or whatever) the Johnny Cash version of "Hurt."
