I think I should have linked WOTE's version of Payphone instead of Trouble.  Way better.  They get points for rewriting the terrible rap bridge, too.

Is it just me, or is "take terrible songs and make them awesome" WOTE's, like, thing?
Oh man, this is fantastic. And we're talking about Maroon 5 here.

If you haven't seen this series of covers, I urge you to check it out, this crazy Dutch guy is amazing! All completely live looped, full of whacky miscellaneous instruments. He also manages to sound a little like Thom Yorke...

Hmm… Does it fully count as a cover if it's done in collaboration with the original artist?

Honestly, I don't know whose idea it was to make an acoustic instrumental version of the main Sonic 06 theme and put it in the game as the bonus screen music, but he's a goddamn genius. I'd argue that had I been unlucky enough to purchase that game at full price, this and the options menu music alone are easily worth the 60 bucks.

https://youtu.be/xrxBysS2mJE

(In case you're wondering, the title of the song is This World, and I'm not entirely sure if it's by Zebrahead, Crush40 or Zebrahead ft. Jun Senoue)

I stumbled upon this one listening to an old John Peel Festive 50 (the yearly event that he rather loathed), and now have it stuck in my head:

Covers that surpass the originals:

Yes - "America" (Simon & Garfunkel)

Iron Maiden - "Cross-Eyed Mary" (Jethro Tull)

Johnny Cash - "Rusty Cage" (Soundgarden)

Manfred Mann's Earth Band - "Blinded by the Light" (Bruce Springsteen)

Any Bob Dylan song performed by anybody who isn't Bob Dylan.

+1 on this.

And I'll add a few of my favourites as well:
Doro "Breaking the Law"
Judas Priest "Green Manalishi (with the two pronged Crown)" & "Diamonds and Rust"

Never really read this thread from the beginning before today. From page 1:
Not a big Linkin Park fan, but I do really enjoy this cover of Adele's Rolling in the Deep.

Several years back a friend posted to Facebook,

If "Rolling in the Deep" started with a piano, it would be a Linkin Park song.

To which one of his friends posted that same link in reply

I'm not generally a fan of covers of wildly popular songs, but that was rather righteous.  My only quibble was the pronunciation of mountain - he learned English by reading, not hearing.  That's not a swipe - many learn English as a second language and learn odd patterns as a result.  Well done.

Maiya Sykes friggin' knocks it out of the park with this very different and very soulful take on 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams'.

Noir movies need to make a comeback and feature songs sung by Ms Sykes, Melind Doolittle and Tess Mohr.

Linkin Park get lampooned for their lyrics a lot, but they meant a lot to me as a child and still do - 'In the End' in particular is too hard to listen to since Chester committed suicide because the chorus lyrics are 'I tried so hard and got so far, but in the end it doesn't even matter.'
