Emily is good hearted, but is that enough? She will not out Claire out of malice, but she may not understand how important it is to keep the secret.

Is it really that big of a secret to keep at this point though? Claire is clearly feeling more confident about herself just in general, I'm guessing young master Reed was the first person outside kinfolk and support groups that heard her secret, to which she recievied a very positive and supportive response. While Emily kinda suprised her, she told her without too much hesitation and Emily was very... enthusiastic in her response as well. (I kinda got the mental picture of a big golden retriever jumping on Claire in that last panel)

Considering you can tell if someone is trans a good 90% of the time just by looking at them, I'd say you may be exaggerating a bit.

I rather worry about Emily knowing Claire is trans as well. Even being given the 'please don't go telling anyone' speech, I wouldn't trust her not to slip at some point. Not out of any kind of malice of course. Just the opposite really. Because she is happy for and proud of Claire. More than a few people have been outed in these exact circumstances by a well meaning, happy and supportive friend who is just so darn proud that they tell other people about their trans friend... Which is a huge faux paux of course, and downright dangerous. While I doubt anybody in the cast is going to turn on Claire, you never know who will overhear it. And in the end you can really never predict how people will take this kind of news, even if you know them well. When I came out to my group of friend just before I started presenting as female I was totally wrong in several cases of who would be supportive and who wouldn't...

Emily is just too chaotic to be trusted with big stuff like Claire's trans issue. Is she evil? No but she is both wild and dumb enough to be dangerous to everyone.

I will admit though that as the character as grown I have grown to hate Emily just because she is so out there. I wonder what happened to the other grad student?

As for whether or not Emily can be trusted, for all her quirks, she doesn't strike me as the type to gossip. She seems more curious and interested in learning about other people than talking about them. She's in her own little world most of the time anyway. This is the girl that spends more time thinking of puns and banana smoothies and looking up facts in encyclopedias than outing anyone.

That, and Claire did say it was a secret. Presumably Emily knows what a secret is and how to keep it. I bet she'd be thrilled she was trusted this way and take special care. Emily is nothing if not enthusiastic in all she does.

Over all, though, I'm glad to see the characters setting a positive example of  acceptance when someone comes out to you.

Agreed. Not to mention, Emily REALLY seems to think highly of Claire, even before she came out to her. After the ear piercing incident, I think she'll be really careful not to do something that could harm a friend she really admires. After several communication mishaps, I think this is the time where she'll pass with flying colors, since it's also the time where it matters most.

Given Claire's track record it's possible she's a better judge of character than we are.

I suspect that at some point in the future, Claire will say to Emily "thanks for not outing me [in x situation which just occurred where other people might have been tempted to]" and Emily will say "well you asked me not to! Why would I tell people something you didn't want them to know?" and genuinely not have a clue why someone would do that.

I don't see her being like that in any antagonistic way, though; more like she just can't help thinking of them as toys instead of people. She did spend all her time in her AI 101 course looking at cat GIFs, after all, so she's lacking all the basic info about why they're considered people and what behavior toward them is considered rude or not rude.

Edit: By the time I checked the comic this morning, the site was correctly displaying #2571 with no hint of 2572. So it was rather odd to come here and find you all discussing a comic I hadn't seen and couldn't see. It was also pretty amusing to see you all speculating about Jeph's deeper motivations for skipping a comic, since at that point it was obviously just a simple goof, and especially amusing since he's made that exact same goof on multiple occasions in the past.

Okay, so it looks like some of you are talking about this, and that's good, but I'll weigh in just the same.

*You* shouldn't go around telling people about your friend/lover/stranger/etc.'s trans/cis/whatever status because...well, we live in a reality where too much bullshit gets done over it. The 20th looms closer and closer after all if you really want a reminder.

That said, not to trivialize stuff, but it strikes me that the point where you can start referring to it as The Secret... maybe I'm not articulating this very well, but it seems like it's distinctly possible to take that a little too far the other way. There's not as much difference as I'd like between hiding yourself so that they don't find out you're different, and hiding yourself so that they don't find out you're different in another direction, if you get my meaning.

Though maybe that's the rambling of a bitter woman who won't get to easily 'pass' for a long time, if ever. Can't deny that colors my viewpoint.
