Why are people upset about the moving text? Would it be better if it were static? It's not like it ruins the comic, it's just a bit of breaking the fourth wall. And, we DID all see this coming.

Idk seems like an odd thing to pick at, considering it's a cartoon.

Because some people don't have enough real problems to be upset about.

HEY!! Do I make snide comments about what you complain about??

No! No, I do not!   :-P

I think she just doesn't like to admit she likes to watch.

I think she likes the idea of watching more than the act.

There's a case to be made that she interfered with Marigold's decisions, though I see it as interfering with Marigold's decision-distorting fears.

So, how long has it been since we've seen Winslow?

He was in the poster of characters strip (2537).
If you don't count that, he was in the QC forum's guest strip (2316).
If you don't count that either, he was wearing a little hat (2189).

Last time he says anything is the strip before...the last time he had anything relating to a storyline was the Roomba jokes back over three years ago.

It'll probably be fine, but as most of us I would think would know, emotions and makeouts are....powerful, intense things. Especially when combined like this.

It's not exactly surprising that a person with such obvious avoidant tendencies would want to retreat and process a bit. Also probably freak out a bit, but hey.

Yeah I was wondering how long it would take for Marigold to freak out - as de_la_Nae says, powerful emotions were invoked which she is not experienced enough to handle. She would need to retreat and process for awhile. The problem is, the way she is, she'll probably avoid Dale for a week or longer before Momo and Hannelore have to use the threat of force to get her to talk to him again.

Dale couldn't close because he's not a manager.

I work at a Justice. At our store, either Alexis (chief manager) or Shannon/Nadia (asst. mgr.) has to be there to close.  At the end of the day, money has to be counted, so the manager has to sign off on it. I assume it's the same for Coffee of Doom, so either Dora (manager) or Faye (asst. mgr.) has to be there to count the money at the end of the day.

Well no, that doesn't work, because Hanners clearly would've closed if she hadn't bolted. Also there were no managers until Faye got promoted, just owner and underlings.

Well, at least Marigold wasn't there to hear how much her behaviour had grossed out Hanners, which would have only added to her embarrassment and confusion.

Surely she and Dale will recover. They can't pretend it didn't happen.
Next time I guess they'll meet in a less public place.

I think it's just that Dale is new. When I worked in the service industry it was a few weeks before I was allowed to close by myself, due to money being involved (like the other guy said). Granted, we still don't know how long it's been since he started, but it's one of the more recent events to happen in the comic so I doubt it's been a while.

Marigold reminds me of a friend's cat, adopted from the wild. I gradually made friends with it, but after brushing against me for a few seconds it would suddenly realize what it was doing and flee in terror.

Marigold has doubtless missed a lot of the usual growing-up activities since she was ten years old.

I could definitely see this happening to me. Panicking after something like this, though in my case it would probably be out of confusion. I wouldn't know how to handle such a situation at all.

She just acted like a dick and put Marigold in a difficult situation she might not have been ready for. I know this will be down to her own personal issues, but c'mon, it was a tiny bit ridiculous.

OK, you can have that one. The "crass statement" declaration was most likely because of your previous remark without giving your backing evidence.

But consider, Marigold is pretty ready to handle that sort of situation, but her self-confidence (and notable lack thereof) will push her away from her happiness. Consider also that both of them are horribly awkward around each other. If Hanners hadn't forced (well, not so much "forced" as "checkmated" (like in chess)) the situation, what would Marbear do?

By giving these two some alone time, both Dale and Marigold were able to break through their awkwardness long enough, and... well, you know.

Having made out before doesn't necessarily means she is ready for the situation she is in. I think running away proves that.
I thought it was odd her SpaceBoyFling hadn't been brought up since they left space but maybe it's because she is ready for the physical act but not having to follow up emotionally with the other person.

Having worked at fairly small establishments, where having a manager close out is not always possible[1], having a trusted minion deal with the money at the end of shift is certainly a possibility.  And Hanners is certainly one employee who can be trusted to have an accurate count of the money (hell, if she's good enough to audit for her mother, I think she could handle the daily count for CoD)

[1] Hell, at one former job, those of us at "the small store" were completely unsupervised, with no difference in title/duty.  The only difference was how many merit or seniority-based raises any given employee had.

I am a volunteer at the shop I work in (all but 2 of the 140 people who work there are volunteers - one of the paid staff is, unsurprisingly, paid to coordinate the hordes of volunteers) and last night I closed on my own and cashed up. I suppose it might be relevant to note here that I'm also the treasurer, so I'm arguably the person who is most invested in getting the count right.

I got the impression that Marigold ran away because she saw Faye walk in (edit: she didn't run away due to anything Dale did). It seems like she was embarrassed that Faye saw them making out. Pretty reasonable for someone who's inexperienced.

Or she may just have realised that she had no idea what to do next, and panicked. Anyway, I am sure it was not anything Dale did. But of course Dale would think so.

Hanners grossed out by a situation that she created, and doing a runner (though she presumably rang Faye to let her know); Dale, um, preoccupied; Faye has to pick up the slack. Welcome to the wonderful world of being a supervisor, Faye.  :-)

I feel like I'm repeating myself here, but I think it bears mentioning: people like Marigold rarely 'heal' enough to not run away from situations like this without actually going through times that they run away. Maybe I'm projecting a little too much, but we have a very strong alarm sense that we have to face down, and sometimes we have to step away a bit to quiet it.

This is a Marigold victory. No drugs, in public, for a few important minutes no fear. The fear comes back, and will probably never fully go away, but it can become more manageable.

Don't ever expect her to be anything like Dora or Tai or even Faye. She'll probably run away a few more times. But it also probably doesn't mean the same thing to her that it would to other characters.

That's my super-self-projecting theory at any rate.
