Those are really nice. One day I will have enough money to get some frames from Opera Opera.

I bought some frames with no prescription last week because I just wanted to complete my hipster/douche image. (Because they were $2) I wear them every now and then but I don't think they look all that great. They just add to my geek factor. Especially when I wear bow ties.

How will I actually improve myself if you do not say how I make my outfits shit? You have already pointed your issue with the vest. I'm sure you'll have a problem with the bowtie as well but I don't so it won't be going. Also I get compliments.

like nobody ever looks good with a bowtie. bowties are not sharp. (unless yr talking about a straight black modest bowtie on a tux in that case that is just how things are done.)

Sean I'm gonna have to stop you there and-

Anyway the point is that there is a way to wear a bow tie, and even a way to do it in a casual context, but that is not it. Basically Sam's comments re: don't wear a vest sans jacket stands with this as well. Consider either investing in some serious tweed or corduroy or ditch the bow tie.

okay dovey yr first example is over 70 years old probably, yr second is a tux (i already deemed that an exception) and i cant say im fond of yr third example, dude would look better with a normal tie i think.

the point is basically unless yr in the finest of suits take off the fucking bowtie you asshole.

also guys i need fancy clothes myself actually! pants to be specific. so last wednesday for my departmental recital i had to dress all fancy, so i assembled an outfit. i was wearing a white shirt with a dark blue tie that has a dark blue to light blue pattern in it and i had a sweater on over it that zipped down into a v neck type thing (i wish it had no zipper but its actually a nice lookin sweater) so i had that zipped down to show off the top of the tie. i was pretty proud of the top. now here is my problem, i only have black pants. i wore black pants anyway but i hated myself the entire time (the black hits the sweater right at the dark blue so its a really nasty clash.) basically, i need some fancy pants that will work with the top half of this outfit. shoes too, but im not too worried on shoes at the moment, as pants are my most pressing issue.

no dude i said the black dude needs to take off this bowtie and put on a normal tie.

okay since it is formal, at the very least lose the bowtie for a normal tie, and either do what sam said for the rest or completely ditch the vest and hit up a sweater or a jacket + vest, or really anything but what you did.

In the second photo it's really more the second guy from the left I was pointing to (even though I didn't make any effort to single him out because both of the middle guys are pretty good) and I guess technically the third from the right guy is wearing a tux jacket (shawl collar, one button, silk covered buttons) but he is also wearing a blue shirt (it might even be chambray?) and boat shoes/no sox. Also the jacket has flap pockets instead of jetted. It's a confusing outfit fo sho but I still think it rocks, although that may have a lot to do with how well it all fits and also the dude is just so good looking.

Basically I know I can probably find good examples of casual bow-tie-ry if I go to the Ralph Lauren page but considering the lambasting I've given them before it's probably not the best form.

1) Read this, whatever the context, you totally missed the mark. And I don't want to hear about what anybody else in yr class was doing or anything, they don't have a whole forum of snarky assholes to help them

2) Yes "the black guy" (It's Kanye guys, fucking geez) is doing it right, and if you can't tell how yr outfit significantly differs from his then yr probably beyond help.

Sometimes I don't understand you people. Yes, he looks like a dweeb, but that was his goal. He is not a terrible person for looking like a nerd. Nerdy is fashionable, it seems. (Really if you wait until you're past 50, I think that look will work better. Now not so much, but I think you knew that.) But yeah, fake glasses suck just because they are fake and it's annoying for those of us with real ones.

Really, if you want to talk about terrible fashion, somebody please explain to me why rompers are good ideas. I accidentally picked one up today that I mistook for a dress and I tried it on anyways for the amusement. I think if I had a pair of hiking boots, a safari hat, and a gun I'd be one stop away from hunting dinosaurs. They are far more stupid than bow ties.

Kanye could get away with no belt if his pants fit better.

Sean cop some gray flannel, it is like the classy man's jeans i.e; neutral enough that you can wear it with any top+shoes of any colour but still interesting in terms of texture. If you only have one pair of pants, that should probably be it (not that you should only have one pair of pants). Consider some khakis too if you are so inclined.

To put it as simply as possible, the blazer. There's more to it than that e.g; the interplay between all of the colours in the outfit and the way the shoes and sunglasses dress the whole thing down but basically the blazer legitimises the bow tie, and makes everything "complete", while still maintaining a casual air. Please note that "casual" in this sense basically means something that is not Formal. It looks fancy/dressy but you couldn't really wear it to a conservative office, wedding, funeral etc.

If you wear a waistcoat and a bow tie then you just look like a guy who is missing a jacket.

Essentially yr outfit did not work because you stacked too many formal elements into the look while disregarding the most important piece of a men's formal outfit, the suit jacket. Also it is slightly more ephemeral/subjective but the outfit just screams "Look at Me! I'm So Zany!" which I guess was what you were aiming for in the first place but it's just not a good idea dude, sorry. Men's dressing is about detail and subtlety. If you wanna play it as an eccentric, think about bright socks or something.

Linds, I sympathize with being totally mystified as to the purpose of rompers, especially what sort of occasion is supposed to be appropriate for them.  I have a friend who wears a  seafoam green and white terrycloth romper as I-don't-give-a-shit clothes.

I hate rompers. Whoever designed them obviously just wants women to remove their entire outfit just to use the toilet. Or make sure they don't misplace their pants, I dunno.

Also, Linds: WHAT I'M NOT A NERD

Everyone who posts on this forum is a nerd in some fashion. Being nerdy is not a Bad Thing. Actually it's better than being a hipster douche, so take it as a compliment!

Lind, define nerdy please. What is a "nerdy look" for you?

The big glasses are the biggest thing, but GIS geek chic and you'll get the general idea. Or watch a movie from the 80s or 90s that depicts a stereotypical nerd and I assure you what they are wearing has snuck its way in to current trends. High waters? Nope, now they're cropped pants. Saddle shoes/loafers? Slap some stiletto heels on them if you're a woman and make them in nice leather if you're a man and you're good. Sweater vests, horn rimmed glasses, suspenders, video game themed shirts and accessories, etc. etc. I'm not saying that they are all purely nerd fashion, but they are definitely more prominent now that "nerdy" is fashionable.

About rompers, I actually think some of them look great! I bought one in NYC, and I'm going to post pics as soon as it's warm enough to wear it (give or take two months), and going ot the toilet wont be any more difficult than usual because it's sleveless. Actually I should start posting more of my outfits, I hardly ever do that. I'll try to do that when I don't have to dress like I'm an eskimo.

The first thing about Dovey's pic sets is that the second set works because everyone in it is remarkably good-looking.

The second thing is that the first thing I thought when I saw the pic of Kanye was "oh hey, it's Kanye - oh wait, is it just some random black dude who kind of looks like Kanye and I'm just thinking it's him?  No, it's definitely him, no-one else would dress like such a goddamn fucking douchebag asshole"

I mean yeah, Jacob's outfit was not exactly high fashion, but if dressing like Kanye is fashionable then I want to burn the fucking world to ash.

Dudes and lady-dudes, I feel I need not so much fashion advice as more of a list of things I should probably buy to look Rad. I guess I don't think I really need someone to help me look nice but I've run out of ideas?
