Life of Brian is the critics' choice generally. It was voted the funniest comedy ever, somewhere, by someone.

It's absolutely brilliant is what it is. Our uni's film club hosts a screening of it every year, right in the middle of Jesus Week.

Yeah that did occur to me also, but that's not the point is it? It'd be like showing Dogma. It's deliberately trying to piss people off.

In what sense is not a bad thing to deliberately piss people off for no reason?

I'd say it's more deliberately trying to make people laugh. If people get pissed off at showing a Jesus related comedy during Jesus week, I'm not sure how to help them.

That isn't the point though.

It's the same issue I have with Dogma as a movie. It's not that the movie is offensive - because I don't think it is - it's because it's trying to be offensive, which is pathetic and just targeting people who don't deserve to be targeted.

Life Of Brian the movie doesn't do that, no - and deliberately so. That's part of why it's brilliant and part of why the backlash is stupid.

But I'd be surprised if this uni film club is aware of that.

Even if they are, they're deliberately playing that film during that week because they know it would irritate people. I doubt it's a coincidence.

Hey, sorry was going to post this reply about an hour ago when I realised I had a radio show to be on very shortly..

So yeah, It'd be a dick move if Jesus Week was a positive event. It's not.

It's run by the Evangelical Students club, who are backed by one of those crazy rich megachurch/business/pyramidscheme churches (Influencers and Hillsong here in Australia, to be precise).
Their club gives them all identical sweaters to wear, and they go around trying to 'lure' people into their club with promise of free cake and other foods, but then they ask you all of these twisting questions to try and get you to admit that you believe in god. The worst thing is they deliberately target new international students, as it's likely they don't have many new friends and they play on those insecurities and anxieties and be like "Trust US. Trust GOD, We'll Help You. God Helps You". It's kinda cult-like, which makes me sick.

The event used to be a lot more inclusive though, and traditionally, we always had a formal debate between their club and ours on the first day (where they always set the question and it's always something wanky like "Is God Love, Yes or No?"). These days though it's just ridiculous. I'm fine for religious events to happen on campus, but the fact that this club gets a whole week is just not right.

So what we try and do is provide a bit of comic relief in the middle of a week which is usually very annoying for a lot of students. I think this year we might try and get a game of Brian Tag happening as well (where we designate someone as the "Brian" and the rest of us chase them through campus with gourds and sandals)

We're just trying to have a bit of fun, really  :-)

I admittedly jumped to conclusions here because the atheist societies I've seen have pulled shit like what I was describing pretty often, and basically given atheists a bad names.

When I joined back in 2010, our club was like that. I've spent the last four years making it not that. It's actually now written in our constitution to "not be dicks"  :-P

And now, back to the Non-Euclidean geometry:
