Just when I was about to give up on Overwatch I decided to pick up Zarya and now I'm having the time of my life reconverted as a Zarya main. And I win matches too.

Just bought Mass Effect: Andromeda.  Installing it now! I've heard this is more space exploration and colony building that the recent titles so I am jazzed about putting the old N7 suit back on and tumbling around in a rover tank.
Please do tell me how it goes! I'm having to wait a couple of months to play it until I can afford a new rig and I WANT TO PLAY IT SO MUCH!

So I played a good bit of ME: Andromeda yesterday. I finished the first colonization of Eos.  The best way I can describe it is: it’s like all 3 mass effect games in one. I can see elements from each and some of its own, both with their perks and flaws.

For you lore nerds:
(click to show/hide)

Now onto the game:
The combat is very tight. I will say the controls are a bit awkward at first but I chalk that up to the fact I played ME1-3 on the xbox with a controller and now ME:A is with keyboard and mouse.  I got the hang of it in no time and probably could have just hooked up my controller instead.  The addition of a jump jet makes everything fun and exciting.  I found myself trying to use it while on the ship only to discover I wasnt wearing it...granted I was just trying to jump jet over a table instead of walking around it.  Another cool think is the scanner.  You use it to, well, scan everything! It helps with research for later upgrades and equipment.  You also learn a little bit about the planet/alien/tech you scan.  The leveling system appears like the old ME1 interface mixed with ME3 with branching abilities. Also the vehicle parts are surprisingly fun.  The only down side is it’s a civilian rover so no weapons (yet) and this is also how you scan for resources to build new equipment.  You just drive around until your meter blinks at you saying there is nearby minerals.  I am not a big fan of the UI though.  It’s like the devs just used windows explorer or share point instead of streamlining the whole thing.  Everything is basically a folder and sub folder structure and nowhere near as dynamic as say ME2.  My biggest complaint would have to be the character creation.  It’s just so limited. They don't let you change the chin, face length, or eye brows.  You have to pick one of 10 different default heads that have those things you like and then customize it from there.  Nowhere near as much choices or customization as any of the previous games which is rather sad.  I was looking to make Nigel Thornberry (after all, we are explorers and observing aliens) but there was only one mustache option and it was a pornstache, let alone any ability to shape the head, eyes, anything.  One youtube group I watch like to make their ME characters look like a space duck...unfortunate they were not able to pull that off with this game.  It’s just so limited, like the devs took this part too seriously or just didn't put enough time into it.

Graphics:
I am running this on PC and it’s strange. I honestly feel like it’s a mix of graphics from all 3 previous installments.  The Krogan executive person has blank black eyes whereas the Krogan soldier I met has the reptilian one we are used to from the previous games. Some things seem low res akin to ME1 while standing next to something from ME3.  I thought that this may just be because of my rig but I've seen others with far better PCs than I encounter the same thing.  The facial features on some squad mates don't seem to match or react to the situation they are in sometimes (example: Executive Tenn "We had a mutiny and after putting it down we had to banish them from the space station.  Many families were split apart because of this."  Meanwhile Cora is staring off into space with a big smirk on her face).  There are some weird clipping problems here and there too. Nothing to break the immersion (except that one time where a tv screen 30 feet away somehow also lodged itself into the head of the Avina VI standing 2 feet away) but enough to notice and laugh...not unlike some of the weird shit you'd see in ME3.

Writing:
The plot is solid and even the side quests are interesting as well. The squad mates are very interesting and fun, but one seems rather...off.  They threw a temper tantrum over the fact you are made pathfinder instead of her and she doesn't understand why...even though it was fully explained literally right in front of her when you as the player are made pathfinder.  Natalie Dormer is your ships doctor, which is a plus.  Everyone does have an interesting personality and backstory though. Like Cora, she's basically what you would get if you took Miranda and Jack and spliced them together. And the Asari squad mate is an archeologist but, unlike Liara, she is a ball of energy and just incredibly fun to be around! The pilot, co-pilot, and engineer are rather bland but then again I haven't really got to know them much compared to the squad mates that I have gotten to know in the field.  I think I spent more time planet side with the squaddies than on the ship...which is also a plus. Reminds me of ME1 where the ship was just to talk to the squad mates on the side line rather than be the only way to connect with them a la ME2-3.  The main character (Ryder) is no Shepard, which I see as a good thing seeing as you are not a battle hardened veteran but a civilian.  I chose the male Ryder and honestly, he's quite likable.  They completely got rid of the paragon renegade mechanic and the choices are split up into emotional, logical, casual, professional, and romantic options.  I like this change as it lets you really personalize your Ryder. Mine is pretty much a lovable rogue.

Stability:
The game is not without its bugs. One enemy fell into a rock but I could still hit him in the head.  Granted I destroyed an entire battalion up to this point so it was rare.  Also there's a bug with changing the colors of you outfit but supposedly that will be fixed in the next patch, along with the dreadful character creation. Nothing game breaking but what you might expect from Bioware if you played ME3. :icon_rolleyes: One thing I hate is that it’s easy to cut off your squad mate from saying something while in the field because you advanced too quickly, whereas in the previous game they would finish whatever they were saying before going onto the next area, usually auto-switching you into a walk than a jog/run.

Summary:
Pros:
+Great Story and Characters
+Jump Jets!
+Great Combat
+Stable with a few comedic bugs
+Exploration is a key element

Cons:
-Terrible Face Customization
-Garbage UI
-Weird cut off with squad dialogue when exploring.

All in all it’s a lot of fun but because it just seems too unpolished I would have to agree with the 7/10s they've been getting.  If it were polished and the UI wasn't garbage I'd have given it a 9.

Mind you I have barely scratched the surface here so I may change my opinion once I have finished the game. For all I know it has a ME3 style shit ending, but so far its awesome.

I have also picked up ME Andromeda, for my PS4. I may be regretting that decision. I haven't got that far yet.. I've made it to the Nexus and have been running around meeting everyone and dealing with ship missions before heading out to the first proper exploration.  I haven't made it that far in the game for a few reasons... I had a lot of trouble with the combat. I'm generally pretty crap shooting on consoles, I much prefer the keyboard and mouse for controls. I wound up turning the difficulty down to 'Narrative' to get past the prologue mission. Bad aim is one thing, but I also have trouble seeing enemies at any kind of distance. It's been an ongoing problem with my eyesight that looking at distant things they all tend to blur together, which makes it hard to pick out distant enemies. And my TV is a very old 780p model, so everything is grainy anyway. It works and I don't use it much, so I never bothered replacing it... All in all though, it makes any combat very difficult. I play ME for the story and characters anyway, but still...

So far the game is good. The characters I've met are interesting. I just have the human crew mates so far, of course. Character customization is... Just this side of acceptable. It could have been so much better but at least you can make different looking characters. Initial stories are pretty most straight standard sci fi tropes. I'm really having trouble wrapping my head around the character who is very much a newbie, being made Pathfinder, just because your dad says so. Promoted over his second in command, who now serves on your team. Some people question the wisdom of  you being Pathfinder when you clearly have no idea what you are doing, but then they shrug, give a goofy grin and go 'oh well, what can we do?' It's good that it's different that Shepard, who was already a proven leader before you start the game. And explains why you have no real skills to start with. But it feels like they let game mechanics concerns override logic and good storytelling. I'm sure Ryder will grow into a role, but as someone put it, this is a crappy time for on the job training for a Pathfinder.

Just wait until after Eos, well, depending on your dialog option.  It was rather comical for me.
(click to show/hide)

For me the initial part of the game was really slow.  Once I got on Eos the fun-o-meter increased dramatically!  Sorry to hear about your combat situation.  Any way you can get it on the PC?  Might help a bit.

That's probably what I'm going to do. I'll try to trade in my PS4 copy and get the PC version. Since I haven't got that far I don't feel bad restarting.

I will say habitat 7 (the tutorial planet) was a bit rough with combat compared to Eos.  I say give Eos a try if you can and see if the combat is still rough for you.

Oh! More more weird bug! When someone... no, anyone says they will "explain it on the way" and they give you exposition on the way somewhere, they will run as fast as possible as if you are an escaped t-rex chasing them and the only way out is that objective they are taking you to.  Its rather funny if a little off putting.

Well I was going to buy Andromeda this weekend, but considering what I've been hearing over the past few days, I might leave it for a while. Especially after seeing a few videos where the characters just look...odd... Like a mix of blank stares and weird, jerky animations.

It really isn't that bad. I laugh at the videos as much as the next, but I haven't experienced it myself in the game. Videos like that always showcase the worst of it all, because that's the point. It really doesn't reflect on the rest of the game that works fine.

Edit: Well, getting the PC version of the game was the right decision for me. It's much easier for me to play at the higher resolution. Less eyestrain and a lot easier to tell enemies from background terrain. And combat is a lot easier and more fun. I'm re-doing the prologue on Habitat 7 and finding several areas I missed before. So that's good.

I reeeally need to put that in my console and play soon. I bought it, and here it sits next to my TV. Just... Distracted by other games, when I have time to game.

Temporarily put down Enter the Gungeon (got most things done in it, waiting for the expansion I hope is coming).

Been slamming Stardew Valley while listening to audiocasts. Boy oh boy, this was what I needed.

Looking at Dropsy. Good chance that's gonna be next.

Dropsy on back burner, Talos Principle actually begun.

I'm not that far into it, mind, but pretty happy so far. Then again I knew I probably would be, with Croteam and Kyratzes on the case. Bless them for making you able to zoom like Serious Sam, it was the right choice.

also there's a cheap DLC that replaces the Elohim's voicetrack with one done up as Serious Sam. I uh... it'll be a while before I get to that playthrough, but yessssss

I really like Cities Skylines, though I haven't played it in a while. Be careful with the hydroelectric dams, though. On my first game I accidentally flooded my entire city...

Pretty sure everyone accidentally floods their city the first *several* times they try dams in that game.

Then we start INTENTIONALLY flooding them...

Put The Talos Principle's main campaign to bed the other night, and the Road to Gehenna expansion several minutes ago.

Phew. Emotions. But it's good.

So I'm not happy with some of the changes they made in the series (admittedly one of the biggest being the space battle removal, I wanna storm those Star Destroyers!). So i mean, uh, can't you go play the first couple for that itch?  :parrot:

So - in between maxing out the pokedex on Brick Bronze, I've been hammering through Skyrim again!
(But playing the latest release this time)

I'd forgotten how much I liked it (Although Oblivion is still my fave Elder Scrolls game) but also had forgotten how much certain aspects of it REALLY annoyed me...

I also forgot that I'd written a huge blog piece on it (which I just don't really do! And which I cannot now find to link to) where I tore it apart for being unbelievably negative. (Grumpy and dismissive NPCs, Bratty children, foes who constantly *yield*... and then don't, most quests involving some form of duplicity etc etc)

Still... here I am again!  :)

I'm still playing Skyrim as well, all these years later. In fact, I just had a 'first' the other night, finishing the Dawnguard DLC for the first time. Part of the issue is that I have problems sticking with just one thing.. I'm easily distracted and come up with new characters I want to try all the time. So a lot of the 'later game' stuff and some areas I haven't been through, even though I've had the game since it launched. I've done the first 20-30 hours so many times though...

I have completed Skyrim, I mean actually completed the main storyline and the dlc, like maybe three times, despite having nearly 1000 hours logged for it.

Mainly because I mod the hell out of Skyrim and want to test new builds or character ideas...

Oh, I'm familiar with mods. In fact I'm in the process of re-building modded Skyrim right now in Mod Organizer. I did have a modded version before of course, but when Special Edition came out I switched over to that. I play on PC, so they gave it free to everyone who had the Legendary version. I took everything out of Oldrim to install the Enderal total conversion. Calling it a mod is seriously undervaluing the work the Enderal team did in basically creating a new game in the Skyrim engine. Unfortunately, with Enderal installed, you couldn't play base Skyrim, since I had it on Steam, and it basically used entirely different files. That was fine though, since I had the Special Edition.

Unfortunately, there was no version of SKSE for the special edition yet. The team has to basically re-do the entire thing since it switch from 32 bit to 64 bit code. And they released  a video recently after their tentative time to release had passed. The people who make the Script Extender for all these Elder Scrolls and Fallout games is a two man team who do it in their spare time, which they haven't had much of lately. So basically they said that SKSE64 is partly done, but not ready to release yet. And because of the work people actually pay them to do, they couldn't say when it would be finished at this point. Sad, but totally understandable.

However, I recently found a video from last year that explained how to set up Mod Organizer to handle both Enderal and Skyrim so you can switch back and forth between the two, which is huge. I've been working the last couple of days getting them working and building and testing a modded Skyrim with all the stuff I've been missing in the SE. Then I can start playing anew again. :)

The Walking Dead Season 1. Really enjoyed it, I like the main characters and their relationship a lot. It's much more an interactive story or almost point and click game and that suits me fine.

Anyone want to play Heroes of the Storm and unlock some Overwatch skins?

I've been playing a lot of puzzle games. Stephen's Sausage Roll, English Country Tune, and Recursed. I also spent a lot of time in Infinifactory, a programming puzzle game, and Hexcells/Plus/Infinite, which are logic puzzle games. All come highly recommended.

I'm going to go back in time and try to get Morrowind up to 2017 standards.

Wish me luck.

I should really do that at some point. I've always wanted to play Morrowind, and I own it. Just just could never play it long because of how dated it looks...

Yeah, Morrowind does feel like it has all the control of a brick in custard compared to Skyrim or Fallout, but at the same time it's still very playable. Most of the problem is the visuals of Morrowind, which were bad even in 2002. You can't really change the gameplay, but you can at least change how it looks.

I'll see if I can post an image of how some of those mods look when I'm done setting up.

It was mind blowing how big the world was when I first played it back in highschool. I had never played anything that big in first person.  Then again there was one big draw back.

I am convinced cliff racers are the main enemy in the game.

Finally started playing Mass Effect: Andromeda after my long journey into Breath of the Wild, but it just doesn't feel as good as the other Mass Effects to me

I need to hop back in to ESO for some Morrowind. I keep meaning to, but time is short, and my games list is long...

Got Don't Starve in the GOG sale (only 5 Bucks, get it while it's hot, people) and am trying it out. It's pretty fun so far, I like how you have to figure out for yourself how everything works.

I've started playing Rakuen. It's quite a charming little game with nice music.
