'Jack the Reaper' by Dream's Bell.
It's sort of like the Kirby games, and you play as a chibi grim reaper.

Little Nightmare.  Check that out. The best way I can describe it is a platform survival game with elements of stealth set in the Tim Burton universe.

I've seen Little Nightmares, it looks incredible. But I highly doubt they've made a creative collaboration with Tim Burton.

After I read your comment LTK I re-read mine and see what you mean.  I meant to say its aesthetically like something from a Tim Burton movie.  Mea Culpa

I thought that was what you meant but I wasn't sure. The atmosphere is definitely a bit Burtonesque, but I think it goes more into body horror.

I've been playing Oxenfree. It was much scarier and unsettling while I had the subtitles turned off, because there's a lot of distorted voices in the game and straining to understand them adds to the alienness and uncertainty. It also means that if I don't turn on subtitles I have no idea what's going on and it just sucks trying to play like that so I turned them on. Anyway, it's really well-written and I like it.

I've been trying to push myself out of my game-comfort zone. I can't just keep playing Zelda and Dark Souls over and over again.

I mean, I play a lot of stuff, but I tend to "hide" a little on those games sometimes.

The Steam Sale supposedly starts today, I might get something to help. Maybe a shooter, maybe some strategy stuff.

On the other hand I've had the first 2 Witcher games sitting on my library for years now.

Dark Souls can quite possibly be played forever, as long as there remain other players.

Anyway, can you tolerate the quirks of classic CRPGs? If not, you'd do well to skip to the second Witcher game, which is a far more streamlined experience than the first one. The first is built on the Neverwinter Nights engine. It's a good game, but a number of questionable design decisions make it a lot less palatable to a modern audience. The Witcher 2 is not what I'd call accessible either - the first instances of combat can be ludicrously difficult - but it's much more in line with modern design sensibilities and has an amazing two-branched plot that I don't think any game has replicated since.

I played some of the first Witcher a few years ago. I can handle the quirks, but my stupid decision to play it in the highest difficulty meant I eventually reached a point where it got excessively frustrating and I ended up stopping.

I really don't want to play the second or third games before playing the first one, though.

The sale this year is relatively weak,IMHO, although that has honestly been the case since they axed the flash deals.

At least smaller titles still have considerable discounts.

I don't even remember the first one anymore - the second one is very good, the third ... is everything it's cracked up to be. I also feel the combat system has become better with every successive game.

You could compromise with your "completeness compulsion" by reading Andrej Sapkowski's novels. The CDProject Red team consulted with him, and especially in W3, there's so many references - Just right now I got a little shiver standing in front of Tor Gvalch'ca ...

... and now I have to go back to the Isle of Mists!

The Sexy Brutale. From the opening screen I knew this game would be my jam and yes, so much. Haven't finished it yet but the look, the story, the puzzles, the characters, the goddamn music! This might be in my top ten games of all time. Maybe even top five and I haven't even finished it.

It's a murder mystery style puzzle game but more howdunnit than whodunnit. It has a time mechanic and it's worth watching through scenes a few times before trying to solve it. Bonus, it's Steam summer sales and a third off at the moment.

Ah, Steam summer sale, where gamers to bankrupt buying games they may not even play. Speaking of which I picked up Dawn of War III and the Telltale Games Borderlands today. Both games have been on my 'to get' list pretty much since they were announced.

Picked up Shadow of Mordor GOTY. Kinda feels like the Middle Earth version of the Arkham series.

I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Also got the System Shock bundle. Its funny how times and gaming has changed because I remember clearing the first game years ago, but now the controls seem so wrong and counter-intuitive.

I played Shadow of Mordor back when it released. I really liked it, it feels like the best parts of Assassin's Creed and Arkham combined into one.

Now in retrospect I see some things I liked in Breath of the Wild are also present in Mordor, specially how open ended it feels.

My problem with it is how insanely easy it becomes after you get a few upgrades, something they said they're fixing in the sequel.

And damn if that ending didn't play on the heartstrings a little bit.

The music and look were very my thing. It reminded me very much of a game on PS2 called Gregory Horror Show which I recall having a similar time mechanic. Haven't played it in years though.

It was a good ending. Had a murkier moral(s) than usual for games. I accidentally found the secret ending first which was amusing.

But if only you could take Talion's tattered cloak and glide across the plains, decapitating Uruks as you flew by and taking potshots at their captains, it would truly be an Arkham game.

If Arkham allowed decapitation that is...

The lengths Arkham Knight in particular goes to uphold the whole "Batman doesn't kill" thing are hilarious.

I mean, you can hit a guy with the Batmobile going at high speeds, something that can tear the corners of buildings, and he'll be sent flying, but not die because he actually only took an electric shock.

Fortnite. So much Fortnite. It's a zombie build and fight game that's currently in early access with free to play release next year. It has a cartoony art style and is a somewhat tounge in cheek look at the apocalypse. The entire game is instanced. You will pick a hero to play and go on missions on instanced maps with three other people or solo if you wish. There's always one main objective to accomplish, plus other side missions and quests you can do. You'll run around at first smashing up everything to get resources to craft with, then have to make a fort to defend against attacks of monsters while the main objective does it's thing. There is also outpost where you make permanent fortifications that you have to defend every so often against the monster. Forts made in missions go away once the mission is done but whatever you build in the outposts stays until it gets destroyed.

It is fairly grindy no doubt about that, but each map is randomly generated so each mission is different in the details. Mostly it's a lot of fun and I find myself playing hours a day.

Well I'd suggest, if you can't get NMS to work, go give Noctis a go.

It's not gonna be a *modern* experience by any means. But I still boot it up every once in a while. Let me see....

Noctis? Yeah it's uh... an experience. I hope that you find some pleasure in it. I know I spent some pleasant evenings, listening to semi-appropriate space-ish music and wandering the mountains and craters, chasing distant lighthouses
