Am I the only one who feels like we are being trolled really hard?

I doubt it, Jeph isn't really the kind of writer who sets up a story like this and not have some sort of dramatic pay off. Considering as well that Dora is cutting Sven out of her life, which as I understand it, is just a step below completely disowning him and Angus going for the most important interview in his life (so far), there's just too many people in this who could get hurt to end up with a Pintsize gag at the end.

Jeph tends to go for the slow pay-off with these stories, even the lighter stories (like Hanners' dad's birthday). But this is certainly gearing up to be a major storyline and it most certainly feels like something is going to change.

I can speak from experience* that the easiest part would be to change the gender on your driver's license.

I keep telling a schoolteacher friend of mine from North Carolina that she should move to Massachusetts. Not only would she be able to marry her partner, but we also pay our teachers a living wage.

  • Grammar is not half as important as clarity.

A quick moment of research reveals that it is pretty easy comparatively to get the gender marker on your ID changed in Massachusetts. All that is required is a letter from a medical professional that is treating you stating that you are the gender you identify as. Much easier than many other states which require proof of bottom surgery or just never allow it at all. So in all likelihood Claire's ID matches her gender.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to start making plans to move to Massachusetts...

That's awesome. As someone who has unreasonable anxiety in the face of bureacratic or H.R.-intensive paperwork and red tape, I just imagined it would be tougher.

Man, I  love living in a non-shitty U.S. state.

I am sorry, I did not mean it to come across as that. I meant that the implication was (I think) that he wouldn't do a "let's milk Claire's trans status for drama" story arc (then again, I may be misremembering).

No apology necessary, but thank you.

And true, but consider a few things:

-Jeph clearly stated that, when researching for Claire's backstory, he was horrified by the violence that trans people often face
-Clinton's pathological concern for Claire's safety has to have been a smoking gun of some kind.
-The gang is clearly at a townie bar outside of downtown, all of which in Northampton are like half roughneck/half hipster. The locals aren't always as friendly and welcoming and open-minded as that town as a whole takes pains to be.

To some extent (Claire' Ativan moment, her coming out to Marten and Emily in the first place) there's already been SOME drama about it.

If I had to guess I'd say they are at Hugo's which is still in Northampton proper.

Either Hugo's or Ye Olde Watering Hole. Or if this was taking place in 2004 or earlier, maybe Silent Cal's. I used to live in the apartments just above Ye Olde, and split my time between there and Hugo's equally. And yeah, they're both in NoHo proper, but those four blocks down from Main St. feel like a whole other world.

So Claire is a recently-begun graduate student, right? And she started transitioning in college?

Well, it's a college town, so a 23-24 y/o is gonna get carded.

At what point, do you suppose, even in lib-ruhl Massachusetts, is a trans person able to change his or her gender designation on official government ID or other documents?

Claire gets carded, bartender makes some comment in front of everyone, involuntary outing?

My first thought was that Wil is the bartender and Claire's with Wil's friends, so no need to check ID. But Jeph's gone to great pains to show us that this is a different bar.

Could be a whole other kind of drama on its way.

I live in NY, which has pretty similar laws for changing your gender marker on your ID. I have friends in Mass, we compared. It only took me a couple months to do so, although most of that was because of my laziness. Really, it only took a couple weeks. I had to be on hormones for about 3 -4 months then my doctor gave me a letter which I took to the DMV and they changed it no problem.

In Denmark the law has recently been changed. You can now get your legal gender changed without any modification to your anatomy.

I took her greeting to be full of nerves and directed more towards towards Marten

Same here - or towards Faye as well, since she walked in and saw only the two of them. Claire has always been a bit leery of Faye, and then there was the awkward moment of sharing a bed with Marten. I don't recall seeing these three alone in a drinking situation, and as was mentioned, the talk between her and Clinton brought up issues about feeling safe - so there are many layers to any feelings she is having, I'm sure.

You know, giving a piggyback ride when you've lost a game is not nearly as fun as getting a piggyback ride when you've won a game.

Although crashing from a piggyback ride and cutting up your face because your both drunk is not a whole lot of fun either.

Neubauten's founder and singer Blixa Bargeld was also a legendary member of The Bad Seeds (Nick Cave's band) between 1984 and 2003

They have plenty of great tracks.  Haus der Lüge is a brilliant record, and other good tracks of theirs are Stella Maris and Was Ist Ist.  And the band name actually makes sense, considering that they have 3 records entitled "Strategien gegen Architektur".

On another note, the comic has too much potential adorable going on, since there are both Claire and Hanners in close proximity.

I just looked and my driving licence doesn't have a gender marker on it, other than my name (Miss May-restofname Surname) and I assume the title would change with the rest of the name. You can change your name, including title, unilaterally by simply creating a deed poll which is free to do, legally binding and an acceptable proof of name. One of the acceptable options for a title is Mx, which I have started to see used on forms which require you to pick a title :)
