Amber is... well being her borderline psychotic self. It makes me wonder how long Danny will put up with her randomly raging like that at him.
Sad thing is after these last couple of comics, it seems as though Amber is starting to become that apple a bit close to the tree.

She's always been her father's daughter, that's why she created Amazi-Girl in the first place. That was a mistake, of course. Rather than confront and attempt to control her violent impulses, she just channeled them into an alternate personality that she could use to assuage her guilt. After all, it's not Amber doing these violent things, it's Amazi-Girl. What's happening is that the line between Amazi-Girl and Amber is breaking down. Ultimately this is a healthy thing, it forces her to confront the fact that it's all a lie. In the short term, though, things are going to get rough and potentially dangerous.

Yeah, I had already posted on Patreon that if she's lucky, she'll probably need to be out of her head on thorazine for a while.  I don't see her getting better on her own, and she doesn't have the strongest support network right now.

And in that one, simple statement, Danny proved he can be just as insightful as anyone else.   The question now it, will Amber react or overreact?

I'm betting on over react, badly. I mean, she treated the fact that Danny was talking to Sal as a personal offense to her, and thinks Sal is going to 'turn people against her'. Despite you know.. Neither of them having any reason or shown any sign of that. If anything, they are both concerned in their own ways and for their own reasons, about Amber/Amazi-Girl's mental stability and the likely hood that she is going to get someone badly hurt or killed eventually.

Yep, pretty much as I thought. Amber is running rather than be around someone who threatens the comfortable illusory world that she has created for herself. That line about 'needing Amazi-Girl more' than she needed Danny, Na matter how much she needs him is very revealing about how invested she is in this dangerous coping mechanism and the degree to which she has convinced herself that it is the only option for her.

This isn't about growing up, it's about coping with mental illness. Which is so much harder than growing up - and growing up is hard.

Why do I have the feeling the Am- er, Amazigirl is going to confront Sal, get her butt kicked, and as she curses her demon, Sal goes, 'What the hell are you talking about? That? Oh! That. Really? Really?' and why do I feel that the train hitting the station from that won't really soothe things over for Amber?

Mary is so much like my maternal grandmother that I want to strangle her. She was racist, xenophobic, and homophobic. And hardcore Catholic. Me being biracial and queer did not sit well with her. She was a miserable judgmental woman who seemed to want everyone else to be miserable too.

I suspect its kind of a sort of disbelief that anyone can actually think and act in this manner. I suspect that most people believe it's some kind of incredibly elaborate and subtle satirical performance art and they don't want to get in trouble by showing that they don't 'get' it.

It's been a month and a half of college so far, and don't most people just cut out such a person and avoid them as much as possible? Hell, mary would be a side character if she didn't have anything on Ruth-Billie, though she probably would catch onto Becky right quick....

At this point, Mary is the force of conflict in the comic. It's not a bad thing. The more we hate her, the more we'll feel when she collapses.

I'm not expecting any characters to get 'comeuppances' or 'happy endings' in DoA. The feeling of the strip is wrong for that. It is more a 'slice of life' strip, as far as I've been able to determine. What Willis is trying to do is tell the story of the first year in college for these characters and outline the influences that informed their development from children to adults.

For Joyce, it looks like it is going to be a crisis of faith. For Amber, it is going to be having to confront her mental illness and accept that she can't stuff it into a fantasy life. For Ethan it is not running away from his sexuality. For Sal it is likely going to be having to admit to herself that she can't isolate herself and be this self-reliant mystery if she wants to be happy. However, I don't think that we're going to see any 'ends' (after all, it's only going to be Freshman Year). I can see a follow up 'DoA Adult Life' strip that may refer to their later experiences but I don't think we'll get any massive narrative conclusions from them; that doesn't happen to real people in most cases, so it isn't really likely to happen to these characters.

With regard to Mary, I can see her continuing to be an increasingly disruptive influence in the dorm and, eventually, her parents transferring her elsewhere because the increasing level of isolation and opposition she's facing is impacting on her education (and it's an easy way to define her move as the act of a victim rather than a defeated aggressor).

I suspect that today's strip (5/6/16) is when poor Ethan gets caught in the middle. I think that he'll have an argument with Amber and tell her that she's treated Danny badly and without justification. Amber will, of course, call him a traitor and ostracise him too.

That's when things are going to go bad. Amber, feeling abandoned and with Ethan's 'condemnation' (as she will see it) playing into the "a monster am I" delusion that's at the centre of her delusions, will snap. Then Amazi-Girl will go on a rampage worthy of the worst Bat-excesses of Frank Miller's darkest and most misanthropic Batman stories.

Linkin Park DOES seem to have an obsession with it 'not mattering how hard you try.' I'm hardly a fan, but I swear, that linevis in every song I've heard.

After that song is released, Neil Degrasse-Tyson has a stroke while explaining why the rules of quantum mechanics mean that the universe is probabilistic, not deterministic. Effort, meanwhile, is still meaningless.

Something that's not settling well with me is his statement that Joyce is autobiographical. I highly doubt that he was almost raped and ended up in two other life-threatening situations--and especially not in the first month or so of college. Thoughts?

I always took that to refer to him being extremely intolerant due to his religious upbringing and him unlearning that during college rather than any specific things that happen to Joyce.

I get that. I guess what concerns me is that hr transformation has happened in just over a month, though, and the things that triggered it were specifically the dangerous experiences she's had.

Are they entirely the cause, though? I'd say just the fact that her best friend is gay would've kickstarted the transformation to some degree no matter what. That, plus making friends outside of her religion for the first time.

Willis does like playing up the 'an alien in a human skin' concept with Dina's social behaviour, doesn't he. The sweet thing is that she's genuinely trying to be helpful to Sarah but is pretty much flying blind through a world about which she only has the weakest observational knowledge.

I just need to point out that I blame you all for my discovering DoA and binging through the entire thing yesterday.

For the kindest values of blame, of course. ;)
